: 1970 I'm thinking about buying
Jim71Nova Jan 21st, 10, 12:28 PM I'm new to chevelles and this guy has this 70 model he wants to sell for 7k, It's not an SS, has a 350/th350 combination, with a 10 bolt rear, probably not numbers matching. Interior doesn't look too great either. IE that kick panel fiberlglass thing, whatever that is.
Looks like it has a leak underneath too due to the kitty litter under there, but he says the body is extremely solid and that it runs and drives.
Worth it? I was thinkig of offering 5k cash. Or am I crazy and need to leap on the 7k price?

SPARK69 Jan 21st, 10, 12:33 PM start at 5k if the body is solid ,it would be a good buy at 5k!
ulySSes Jan 21st, 10, 12:33 PM Looks like it would clean up really nice. No engine compartment pics, eh? I'd loose the kick panels and steering wheel. Won't hurt to offer 5k cash.
Xtreme70SS396 Jan 21st, 10, 1:20 PM I'd buy it for that! Then I'd fix those stripes..... but it looks like a decent car for the money.
Jim71Nova Jan 21st, 10, 2:47 PM He said the transmission seal is leaking, he also seemed pretty firm on the 7k, but I can't go that high for it. I may just go look at it and offer him the 5k and see what he says.
mcfadyen72 Jan 21st, 10, 2:56 PM i'd say 7k is a good deal. no its not perfect but you can drive it and pick away at it over time.
memorycamino Jan 21st, 10, 3:04 PM Man, what has happened to people.
7K for a Malibu?
These prices are just nuts.
That same car would have been 1K when I was in highschool...
Jim71Nova Jan 21st, 10, 3:20 PM And a hemi cuda used to go for $4,000.00 brand new. Times change.

What the hell year did you graduate? :D I'd say 5k is fair, Paint looks like it might clean up halfway decent. As far as the stripes go, Looks as if they are small enough that you could actually tape off the correct dimension stripes and cover that mess up.
I'd like to see a under-hood shot. Does it have disc brakes, PS, AC, PB? Any options?

It's not 1999 anymore dude.
LKN BCK Jan 21st, 10, 5:16 PM Looks like it in his way...$5000 will probably p him off. See if he can go any lower than $6000. If it were mine I would spend a couple days cleaning it up and and get it running decent. Then I would not be selling it for less than $7000 for sure...likely more!
Rucumn Jan 21st, 10, 5:42 PM If it is not a solid car, $7k is too much. $5k is probably even a little high. Based on that paint job, I would say there is something ugly hiding under the paint. Shop around and you will find much better buys. It all depends on what you are looking for. If you are looking to restore, then why not start with something you know is very solid for $5k and then you don't have to spend thousands on replacing panels, etc... I like to buy them cheap and just replace all the panels, but I do the work myself.
Don't jump at the first thing you see, shop around and be informed!
BULKSS Jan 21st, 10, 5:52 PM I agree with Hugh. I can see some bodywork bubbling on the right rear quarter over the bumper. Not a deal breaker but makes me question what`s hiding under the paint.
Timmer Jan 21st, 10, 6:28 PM Jimmy - I'm with Bulk on this one. Take a car guy a magnet and flash light check it close up. Looks like moisture inside the car at one time look at the dash & left of sterring wheel
Raupleminze454 Jan 21st, 10, 7:07 PM stripes=hideous
Jim Mac Jan 21st, 10, 9:14 PM if you really want it, just do it! you can spend the next year looking for the car thats just right and never find one for your price. What I would do is make sure you have the money, just go and check every nook and cranny in the car. Dont be knocking the car, just note everything that may be wrong with it. Then ask what the best cash price you could get the car for. If its got more issues than you like, you can always walk. if you like what you see, just buy it and enjoy it. In the grand scheme of things, after you get the car and if you decide to restore it. your going to have many more thousands into it, so the 2 thousand up front really is going to seem like small change when its all said and done. jim

I agree... if its a southern car it should be fairly solid? If the trunk and floors and frame are not rusty. Looks like he takes care of his other stuff. Nice motor home and a boat in the background$$$. Good luck finding another soon.
Cars like that for sale in the midwest really dont exist anymore. Plus it probably has not been out in the rain much in the last couple years, lots of dust there. Most folks would pay $5000 for any year Chevelle that is fairly solid if they really wanted one! And it even runs?
Jim71Nova Jan 22nd, 10, 1:16 AM Yeah it runs, and it hasn't had a drop of rain on it in 6 years he said, just stayed in his barn, i agree the paint sucks.
I also got a lead on a 68 chevelle, and I know this car a little, it's pretty nice, but it has a 350 and a PG. And he wants considerable more, but it's in much better shape. I'll try and get some pics tommorow.
Mechanical work isnt gonna be a problem, I can build an engine in my sleep, and have a buddy that is an expert on transmissions.
Chris R Jan 22nd, 10, 1:25 AM Around here. 7K for that car is a pretty good deal.
Jim71Nova Jan 22nd, 10, 1:47 PM Well I looked at the other one today. Was not really impressed, it is a pretty solid 68. But has a 305 with a PG and a 8.2 10 bolt.
Paint wasn't that great either, but it was remarkably rust free. He wants 9k for it, but I think the highest I could go would be 7k. What do you think?

crazytaz Jan 22nd, 10, 3:27 PM there is a 70 listed on bangshift.com that the guys moving.. and it's apart but one owner..
for bewteeen 3500 to 5 k(doesn't know what to ask)
might be worth a look..
Jim Mac Jan 22nd, 10, 7:52 PM the 68 seems like a nice driver too, but somewhere in the future, if you ever decide to sell (its just a car) the 70 will probably be a bit easier to unload. But then again, the 70 is alot more common. jim
Tod74 Jan 22nd, 10, 7:59 PM worst stripes I've seen in awhile.
Jim71Nova Jan 22nd, 10, 8:56 PM I may not get either. I really am after a 68-72 Nova. And I've been checking racingjunk, ebay, craigslist, thrifty nickel, etc....
And it just seems like everyone has barrett-jackson syndrome with their cars. Either it's a really nice 4 door for a good price, or a maaco paintjob nova with a 350 and rotten interior for 12k. Or what you see here, decent cars, just the wrong things going on for them. If I bought that 68, I'd have to switch out the engine, trans, and rear to have something I really want, so I decided no on the 68 for sure.
The 70, I'd have to paint, fix the engine and trans, then do interior work plus remove the bench seat in favor of buckets.
Bunz-T Jan 23rd, 10, 3:29 AM The advantage Jimmy has is that what he might see as rust would not be noticed by people elsewhere. Dry climate in his area. One thing about Big Spring the Federal Pen there used to have a golf course.
Jim71Nova Jan 23rd, 10, 11:53 AM Well, the country club now has the best, the local gov spent 9 million updating the municipal course and somehow managed to make it worse than what it originally was.
ulySSes Jan 23rd, 10, 12:48 PM Here are a couple you might want to check out. They're in Texas.

ulySSes Jan 23rd, 10, 12:51 PM BTW, just a little warning. I inquired on a couple cars they had in the past and they're horrible at returning messages.
