: Questions about my brake conversion..

I went out last week to start my 66 Chevelle and low and behold, the brake pedal went to the floor. I've decided that it's finally time to get a disk brake conversion rather than replacing/fixing the old drums. I plan on driving this car a lot next year after the paint and body get done so having front disk brakes is my top priority.

I've been reading the archives and it seems that most people either go with BAER brakes, MP Brakes, Ground Up, or do a conversion with various parts from the junk yard and/or car parts store. I want a new system and I don't mind paying the extra money for complete set-up. I'm just curious about what would make you buy from one manufacturer rather than another. I see the BAER brake system is initially higher in price than MP brakes, but is it a better system, other than the rotors they show, compared to the one from MP Brakes or Ground up? What else will I need other than the basic kit if I buy from one user than the other? I was looking at the serious street kit compared to the power disk conversion from MP brakes. Also, some people have advised to go with a power booster due to more pedal strength required to move the pistons in the calipers rather than the wheel cylinders in a drum set up. Is anyone running a new kit w/o a brake booster? I didn't want to get one seeing how I don't have one now, but I don't want to have to do it later if I really need it. I want to order this kit next week so I can do the conversion over Thanksgiving weekend so any information or opinions are much appreciated. Thanks everyone!!!

Apples to Oranges. MP and Ground-up are primarily stock type replacement parts. Baer is state of the art perfromance brakes, if you want to stop right now and do it consistently then you buy Baer or Wilwood. If you just a nice driver with some decent disc brakes then the OE style replacements will work just fine. Remember that with the big Wilwood or Baer packages you will need to run bigger wheels to clear the calipers. My 17" wheels just barely (and I mean like less than .005" clearence) clear my calipers (13" style brakes).

Thanks for the reply Denny. I think I'm going to go with a OE type system because this is a relitively low performance, weekend driver. More than anything, I just don't want drums all 4 corners like the first 10 years I drove it.

Check out True Connections. They have some real nice OE type conversions, I think he even has a 12" conversion for like 400.
