I shouldn't have looked.... my pattern seems pretty dang nice to me. Thinking that I am cool (to be able to implement Freddie's and Tom's suggestions), I decided to throw a pattern 180 degrees away from the nice one just for fun. On the other side of the ring, it wasn't as nice! Crap! Do patterns vary much around the ring? I was going to dial indicate the axial and radial runouts of the Eaton posi's bolt flange, but thought it might bring tears to my eyes. Should I put the cover on the housing and forget about it?

I'm just gonna call into question the same thing that I did in one of your other threads on this same topic....where are you getting this yellow gunk from? And don't they sell the white marking compound anymore? A few years ago I got the white marking compound from www.summitracing.com (http://www.summitracing.com) and it left much better definition on the marking patterns than that crap you're using, and I didn't have to screw around with diluting the white compound with gear oil nor with anything else either. I just used it as is right out of the container.

I still can't help but to think that yellow gook is part of your problem, since some of the pictures you've posted couldn't even determine the pattern because of how bad that yellow stuff is. The markings it leaves seem to be very inconsistent, and difficult to read. The white compound that I used was nothing like that. It sure made the job a whole lot easier.

What was bad about the pattern on the other side?

I've been using the yellw marking compound for about 20 years and I haven't had any trouble with it. I have also tried the white compound and didn't like it as well. I guess it's a matter of personal preference.

The pattern on the other side was scooted towards the toe a bit. It looked kinda like before I added the final .002 to the shim.

The yellow stuff is what came with the Yukon master install kit. If you google-image "ring contact pattern", 99% of the pics that come up will be marked with the yellow stuff. I did see a white one, I didn't know white exists. I did hear that the Permatex Prussian blue is harder to see.

If the pattern is still centered between the root and face then don't worry about it. Heel and toe isn't as important.

Whew! Yeah, it's perfectly centered face to root all the way around.

I am curious, what if the pattern is off centered all the way to the face or root. Will that make noise? If not so much, at what point does the noise start and longevity start to be shortened?
