Is there a do-it-yourself way to remove and replace the bushings in the upper/lower control arms. I appreciate your time. Thank you

If you have a bearing press at home... These are not too expensive at some places (Harbor Freight, etc)

Oryou can use a air chisle to get them out, then maybe a big hammer to get new ones back in (but I don't know if this will really work). But the arms flex, so you need to use spacers to keep the arms from collapsing as the bushing goes back in...

I have also used a drill to drill out the rubber bushing (its bonded to the shell). Keep drilling many smaller holes until the rubber bushing can be removed (usually in many small pieces). When that rubber is out, then the steel shell can be collapsed with a chisle and big hammer. Then it will come out...

I have used a big socket before to beat them in, in a pinch it works but if you got them out you can take it to a machine shop and they will press them in for like 8 bucks or go out and buy the press in tool.

If you are going to replace the rubber bushings with poly bushings, then you actually need to keep the bushing shells in the arms. Another way to get the rubber bushings out, is to burn them out. Proceed with cation and make sure you are outside. I have done this a few times. A little plumbers soldering torch works just fine. Lots of smoke, but they come right out.

I took some out yesterday as matter a fact and I used a air chisel it was a little hard at first but when you get them boke loose then you've got it whipped. Also on min One sid had to spot welds on st out side that I had to grind down.I've not started on the uppers yet.But I was wandering my self how I'm going to get them pressed in the pres I have Is to big and it makes it hard to get them solid to press against.A small press would make it easier.Well goodluck with your alls cars.

Save your self the headaches and pull the arms off...You will have to drop the headers if any installed and move away the steering shaft from the gear box to get the uppers off...Purchase or rent a spring compression tool from Kragen at no cost but a deposit...Remove the lower arms but do remove the steering knuckel...Some lower control arms have oval busings that maybe hard to chisel or bang in...Take the a arms to a machine shop and pay a small fee to get them pressed in...I recently did the same repairs and spent 28 dollars for all bushings to get pressed in not including the cost of the bushings...

When I changed all the bushings in my two chevelles I had to cut the stock tack weld with a dremel or grinder. Then I was able to simply hammer the bushings out of there. I used a 3lb hammer to deliver the force. As far as installing I was able to use a friend's press and it worked great. Just use a little grease or lube to ease the bushing back into the control arm. Be aware of the press when you are pressing the bushing. It can cock the bushing sideways and can pinch the control arm tabs that hold the bushing. I usually place a socket, that fits snugly, between the tabs thus preventing the pinching effect.
