 ok, here's my problem. when the sending unit is out it registers 90 ohms & the gauge responds to moving the lever. however when it is installed it pegs on full & I just sanded a piece of the trunk floor for a good ground. soooo what gives?? I'm thinking the hot wire is grounding somewhere. can someone give me a starting point? THANKS :beers:

If the hot wire was grounded it would go to empty. Try putting a ground wire on the sending unit itself to ground.

ok, its been told to me that my wiring harness to the tank is probably bad. Does anyone have one for sale? the few places I found it for sale wanted $9-$15 shipping for something that would cost less than 2 bucks to mail. anyway email or pm me if you have one. thanks

Wiring harness?? It's just a tan wire from a 2-pole connector in the trunk to the sending unit. Drop the tank and check the insulation on the wire to see if it's rubbed through. If it has, repair the wire with heat shrink tubing.
Unplug the tan wire from the connector in the trunk, unplug the other end of the wire from the sending unit, and check for continuity with an ohmmeter. If the wire's broken then find the break and fix it, or just replace the wire.
The sending unit has a ground wire attached to it. Check the wire for continuity as above, and use a star washer between the ring terminal and the body so that it gets a good connection there.
