: 67 Progress pics
FlameOut Jan 15th, 10, 9:57 PM A couple months back, I decided to dismantle my 67, and attempt to restore her. This is the first time I have ever attempted anything like this, and it's a bit overwhelming at times. Anyhow, here are a few photos of what I'm doing. I'd also like to that fellow TC member Bubba2711 (Ron) for all of the help. He's much more patient than I am :D
Here is my car when I first bought it. Looks good from far away

That's all I can upload I guess. Said I reached maximum of 7 files. I'll add more in a reply to this thread if I can and if anyone is interested in seeing them.
We have trunk and new tail pan in, and now are working on 2 piece floor
Not sure why photos are loading individually, rather than how they normally load, so you can just click 'next' to move to the next one
gary72 Jan 16th, 10, 8:38 AM looks great- in a similar project- just bought a '67 roller- currently tearing it down and stripping it: 43 years of junk, rust and dirt- please continue to post pics of your project and progress as this is my first '67 and I need all the help and reference pics I can get!!
FlameOut Jan 16th, 10, 10:48 AM Gary, there are a bunch f more photos on my webshots (http://community.webshots.com/user/flameout67) site
I'll post more here as I progress, but I think I have hundreds on webshots, along with some videos
rwin1592 Jan 16th, 10, 11:09 AM Wow...I don't envy the project but it'll be nice when done. I was so frickin lucky to buy a Texas 67 with absolutely no rust ever but that's a rare find. Not sure I'd be up to all the metal work!! Looking good...post more pictures!
shadowgray396 Jan 16th, 10, 11:18 AM Bill, you are doing a great job on your car. I'll check your photo's on your web site. Keep us posted on your progress. A 67 will be my next chevelle.

The one thing i'm not patient about is getting those truck motor mounts cut off the frame.
Rusty Rat Jan 17th, 10, 8:37 PM Looks like your off to a good start. I just started my 67 body work, i'll post some pics right after this. I have a couple questions. Did you put on the door skins yet, if so how did they fit? The tail pan, how did it fit?
Thanks,

Thanks,
The door skin (driver side) was a good fit, but I bought a complete replacement door shell for passenger side, and it seems to be like a 1/4" shorter than the original. The tail pain was a nice fit, but right now it's only held in place by new trunk and a few screws in each of the old (to be replaced) quarters

JJ67SS Jan 17th, 10, 9:10 PM I just did a passenger side door skin (today) on the 66 SS, fit was find though tthe box was dropped on the end sometime during the shipment as one of the edges was curled a bit - not bad, but enough for me to have to take a hammer & dolly to it so it would fit over the door frame.
Got mine from my GoodMark rep, good price and good fit.
Door skin documented here http://www.cardomain.com/ride/822091/26

Fricken A right! Way to go Bill.
FlameOut Jan 29th, 10, 9:33 PM Not much progress to report, but I had a few questions and also wanted to post a pic of my new body cart :hurray:
First, has anyone installed a 2 piece floor in their 67? If so, how was the seem down the center? Was there a gap or did it butt ok? Also looking for a measurement from a rocker to rocker (a-pillar?), with measurement just above shifter hump height. Hopefully the photo will explain it better
27069
Here is the measurement I was referring to
27070
27073
27071
The floor seems to butt in the rear, but I have this gap in the front, so wondering if maybe the distance between the A-pillars
27072
FlameOut Jan 31st, 10, 6:56 PM We got one half of the 2 piece floor in yesterday. Still a long way to go, but it's getting there.
I also wanted to post a photo of another new toy. I bought the Shrinker Stretcher set from Eastwood (On sale and free shipping) and today I saw in the Harbor Freight flyer they have their Shrinker Stretcher stand marked down to $115 from $150, and I had a 20% off coupon, so got it for $95
Took all of about 15 minutes to shrink a piece of sheet metal for the window contour. Only problem is I made it a bit to wide. I went with 1 1/2", bent that at a 90, but needed more like 5/8" on each side, not 3/4
Anyone that has repaired their windshield channel, did you slip the new patch piece under the A-pillar? The photo below might explain better what I mean
The new floor. Still need to grind the welds and put that body mount brace back into place
27141
My attempt and a repair
27142
27143
Should I try to get the new metal under this lip on the a-pillar?

large Jan 31st, 10, 7:11 PM I had the same problem with my 66 I used goodmark just make a small filler strip and go slow. On the winshield channel I had to use the dash repair panel and the outer cowl panel the arch was off some took awhile to get right good luck you have a GOOD START
41565chevelle Jan 31st, 10, 10:33 PM Ah, the memories, wait.... I am still living it! Way to go, great work, it will be awesome when you are done.
Jason 67 conv Feb 1st, 10, 7:50 AM I would remove that a- pillar trim piece. Most likely under that a-pillar cover you may have some more rust issues. Look under the a-pillar you will see three small screws. Then you will see one at the top inside channel and two at the bottom. The A-pillar cover will peal up toward the windshield. It has a lot of seam sealer holding it in. My car had the same problem and I found a nice surprise when I removed mine. Just trying to help you out! I had to repair mine and it was easier when it was off the car.

RAIDER SS Feb 1st, 10, 1:05 PM Hey Bill...looking good! Thanx for posting the pix. I can't get enough of your pictures to view!
I gotta ask; where did you get the body cart?
FlameOut Feb 1st, 10, 2:28 PM Jason, I was hoping to get that a-pillar cover off. I'll have to take a closer look at it. I took the screws out, but still couldn't budge it. I guess it's the seam sealer holding it down.
Dave, the body cart was for sale for months in the TC classifieds. I had thought it sold, but emailed the seller and he still had it. Picked it up the next day. It's mane (In the USA) by Autotwirler. It's their Body Cart Plus (http://www.autotwirler.us/catalog/product_info.php?cPath=22&products_id=34&osCsid=92b092df1fe3c7a84c5b5a4e72bdec22) model It sure is a nice tool to have
Freddy Mercado Feb 1st, 10, 7:36 PM Wow man, looks freakin good!!! Keep it up and the pics coming.
FlameOut Feb 2nd, 10, 8:24 PM I couldn't get that a-pillar cover off  Was only able to get one of the three inner screws out. May try again tomorrow and drill them out. Didn't have much time to do anything today
On a lighter note, I picked up another new toy today. A new oxy acetylene cutting torch :hurray: Came with full tanks and the Harris Steelworker 8525-300 Deluxe gauge/torch kit. All for a little under $400. Only bad thing is, I need to hide some of this stuff or face divorce :D

Jeffry72 Feb 3rd, 10, 8:54 PM I gotta say, one of my favorite things is progress and it looks like you guys are making some. Wish I had a friend close by to help out. Keep up the pic's and wish I was there to drink beer and watch you guys working!
2guitars Feb 3rd, 10, 11:23 PM Awesome post...you are a brave man. Good luck & keep the pictures coming!
Tanis Feb 13th, 10, 1:37 PM Nice work so far. I am wanting to know how you did your floors ? I am at that point as well. The front of the pans do not meet but the rear meet.
TerryAT Feb 13th, 10, 8:52 PM Hi, I'm in Pgh also. Just curious to where in Pgh you are located.Getting ready to dig into my Chevelle soon. Its from Calf., but it had some quarter panel work done in the past and I want that redone. Wondering if I should go for some NOS parts or aftermarket? Overall though, it is pretty solid. Keep up the good work!
FlameOut Feb 14th, 10, 11:01 PM Chris, We still don't have the entire floor finished. With all of this snow, the Chevelle was kind of neglected for a bit. Hoping to have the floor finished this week though. Will most likely have to add some metal to the front/center, since the two piece floors weren't stamped very well.
Terry, I'm right on the border of the City and Ross Twp. About a mile from the Perrysville Ave exit off of 279
TerryAT Feb 14th, 10, 11:42 PM You are close by. I'm up in Shaler off of Vilsack Rd. I recently got some snow tires off a guy somewhere close to you. I think it was King Ave. ,near the Pat bus garage, if I remember correctly.

You aren't that far at all. Not sure about King ave, but the Bus garage isn't far at all from me. We'll be doing some work on the floor today. You're more than welcome to stop by anytime
TerryAT Feb 16th, 10, 2:46 PM I wouldn't mind checking the work out sometime. PM me your address.
FlameOut Feb 27th, 10, 6:19 PM Got a little more done in the past few days. We got the other half of the 2 piece floor in the other day, and today I attempted welding up the seam down the middle. I had to add metal though, since they really didn't butt together that well. Only had to add from about the point of the shifter hump to the firewall. I still have lots of grinding to do, but it sure feels solid. The photos show the gap between the floors near the firewall. That is now patched also :hurray:

beano30 Feb 28th, 10, 3:02 PM Nice work Bill.If I remember correctly did'nt you just rebuild the motor outside? You must have just built the garage?
FlameOut Feb 28th, 10, 10:04 PM Thanks, still a looonnggg way to go. I certainly wouldn't even be anywhere near this far along if it weren't for Ron's help (Bubba2711)
I didn't build the motor outside, but I did install it outside. I started building my garage last March, and even though it's not complete, it's getting lots of use
John_Auberry Feb 28th, 10, 10:09 PM good work
FlameOut Mar 3rd, 10, 8:21 PM I finished filling in, and welding the gap at the front of the floor pans. Also patched lower part of a pillar/firewall (what is this area called?) I still have lots of weld grinding to do, but it's coming along, slowly. All this grinding should make me better at welding, so I don't have to grind as much!

Canadian67 Mar 4th, 10, 4:29 PM wow, Bill that looks GREAT!! I am generally in the same spot you are in. Almost thought that was my car for a moment. Keep it up.
Ethan1 Mar 4th, 10, 4:41 PM Looking great, Bill!
BUBBA2711 Mar 4th, 10, 9:12 PM Wow Bill! You've really gone to town on that car. Keep up the good work. I don't know if i can make it down this weekend. I FINALLY have some overtime thrown my way. Just 12 hrs for now but who knows maybe another 12 saturday. I'll be dancing the whole time at work. I was hoping to get my pickup out of storage this weekend but if i don't it can wait till i'm off again.
TerryAT Mar 4th, 10, 10:09 PM Bubba, What part of Pgh. are you in?
BUBBA2711 Mar 4th, 10, 10:27 PM Terry. Irwin.

Brian J Mar 5th, 10, 11:15 AM Car looks good. i give youg guys credit on the grinding. Any spot that cant be seen, is hidden, i'm sure I wouldn't even grind down. LAZY
FlameOut Mar 11th, 10, 6:59 PM I've been working on some of the smaller patch repairs areas, before I move on to tackling the quarters. I have my firewall/cowl area repaired. It was easier than I was anticipating. Also patched both front lower a-pillar area, right in front of the rocker, and also patched a few inched of the rocker. It's coming along, slowly
This was that rust area that I posted in one of my above posts. Repaired now, but still needs a little work
28707
28708
28709
I still need to trim off that excess. I was just contemplating if I could bend that over for that inside edge, or if I should trim it off and weld it along the edge where needed
28710
28711
FlameOut Mar 11th, 10, 8:56 PM I forgot I also did a little patch work on my frame. I had one spot where there were a few small rust holes, so I cut it and welded in a patch
28718
28719
Also, how are these quarters attached to the top half of the rocker, and more importantly, how the heck to I get in there to attach the new ones?
28727
TerryAT Mar 11th, 10, 9:42 PM They are spot welded onto the top of the rocker. I hear people make some small holes on the new quarter, and from the inside, reach in and plug weld them.
Who did you get your quarters from? Lutty's? Im going out thier tommorrow to pick up a quarter(full or 90% full) How does it look as to body lines and overall condition? What brand? Thanks, Terry
BUBBA2711 Mar 12th, 10, 4:43 AM Take out the rear windows and weld them through the access holes. Wow your progress is simply amazing.
FlameOut Mar 18th, 10, 10:07 PM Got a little more done. Got lots of little things done, like grinding. Still need to tackle the rust in the window channel. I'm not sure I'm quite ready, experience wise, for that though.
Got the drivers side wheel wells removed. What a pain! I'm hoping to get the new inner and outer in tomorrow and maybe even test fit the new quarter :hurray:
28900
It's completely removed, even though there is still some of it showing in the photo
28901
Just a test fit of the outer. Looks like it might be a decent fit
28902
FlameOut Mar 19th, 10, 4:41 PM Of course I was a little premature in my above post. Nothing is fitting right. I do have the wheel wells clamped and screwed, and they are probably close to how they should be, but I really can't tell until I can place the new quarter panel, and see how things line up.
I was expecting the removal of the quarter to be easier than it's being. Granted, nothing is ever easy. I'm at the point again where I have to quit for a while, so I guess no wheels wells for a while
Now where did I put that bottle of advil....
FlameOut Mar 19th, 10, 4:44 PM They are spot welded onto the top of the rocker.
Terry, yes, I got the quarter, and most of the bigger body panels from Lutty's. I actually looks good, looking at it in the box. :D Not sure when it might be on the car, but I'm hoping I am one of the lucky ones and I received a decent fitting quarter, and oh, it's Goodmark
FlameOut Mar 19th, 10, 6:30 PM I finally got 90% of the quarter off. Still need to remove the sail panel area. Looks a little tricky. I did figure out one thing anyone attempting a restoration should have, an updated tetanus shot! I lost more blood on this quarter than I have since I started this restoration. My next step is to attempt to remove the drip rail, without destroying it. What's the best way, old type can opener? heat gun?
I can no longer upload photos to TC (I reached my 12 MB limit) so now I have to attach photos from my webshot account.

43 years of dirt buildup on this glass. This was a pain to get out, even with the quarter off!

hpsherlin Mar 19th, 10, 6:51 PM Wow. Hang in there. You are gonna have a fine ride one day.
I admire you doing all that work.
RAIDER SS Mar 19th, 10, 11:11 PM Looking good, Bill. It's alotta work, but it looks like it's moving along.
A little advice though......remove your chrome trim and tail lights. You'll be pissed when they get pitted up from grinding and welding sparks!
and you are a lucky man to have that 2 post lift!
FlameOut Mar 20th, 10, 10:56 AM Thanks for the boost of confidence, I sure need it right about now.
Dave, the tail lights are off. I just put them on a couple days ago, as kind of a confidence builder I guess. To try to motivate me. They are back off, and I successfully removed the drip rail trim. Going to 'attempt' fitment of the new quarter today
FlameOut Mar 20th, 10, 12:23 PM I was wondering about the best/correct way to remove the old full quarter from the roof line. I sanded down to bare metal but still couldn't find the seam, so got out my propane torch to try to find the lead filler. Is this the correct way to remove the lead from that seam? Anything else I should be aware of? I sure don't want to take off to much metal
http://inlinethumb29.webshots.com/38428/2202754330104363472S500x500Q85.jpg (http://rides.webshots.com/photo/2202754330104363472cQXfQH)
http://rides.webshots.com/video/3033270600104363472csmyrR
EDIT: I removed the lead, drilled what I think were the spot welds, but what the heck else is holding this old quarter under the roof? Is it just inevitable that the roof will get a little 'fudged' up while removing the quarter?

Sorry if you guys are getting tired of my questions and photos. I probably should be asking the question in a different thread
FlameOut Mar 20th, 10, 5:40 PM My car must have been built on a Wednesday, by someone that loved to weld! The factory quarter is sandwiched between two other pieces of metal, behind that roof line. I had to use an air chisel, but finally got all of the old quarter out.
After some fighting, I got the new quarter held in place with a few pair of vise grips. The fit sure isn't great, but it's not horrible either. It looks like on the tail pan, the new quarter needs to go toward front of car about a 1/4" to fit tight against the tail pan, but if I do that, the already misaligned wheel wells will be off even more.
As I learned from Ron (Bubba2711), this quarter will probably be on and off a few dozen more times before I'm ready to weld 'er in place

The wheel well fit isn't bad on the front half, but the back and the trunk drop offs aren't even close

Assuming you're trying to re-use the drip rail trim...that stuff is not fun to get off. I removed mine off my 66 Caprice and was scared to death the entire time I was removing it.
Brian J Mar 21st, 10, 1:18 PM Sorry if you guys are getting tired of my questions and photos. I probably should be asking the question in a different thread
Keep all your questions in here. It will make it better/easier for future people looking for answers to the same questions
jestico Mar 21st, 10, 10:03 PM I happen to be doing quarters on my 67 right now as well, I am right there with you. Got the same short here-long there issues. I had to cut back a bit of the roof to get at the spot welds and sandwhiching the factory put in there on the quarter-inner structure attach points. How did you find the look of the sail panel at the aft end right where it meets the trunk lid ?
FlameOut Mar 22nd, 10, 1:30 PM I happen to be doing quarters on my 67 right now as well, I am right there with you. Got the same short here-long there issues. So far the fit isn't that great, but really all I did was hang the quarter on and took a few photos. I'm still at work (after over 30 hours straight) so hopefully I'll be able to get a better idea later tonight, if I have time, or tomorrow. I think I may also be replacing the rear window to trunk panel. Mine is pretty bad in the window channel
kh'67 Mar 22nd, 10, 7:10 PM Please keep posting the progress photo's Bill, there's almost no info on these quarters. A wealth of good info you are providing for us all
TerryAT Mar 22nd, 10, 11:17 PM Bill, I m doing my qarter right now and it all seems to be aligning up well for me. Trial fit. Anyways, I just want to know if when you removed the old quarter, did you leave in that small piece of metal near the sailpanel, but down in where the window channel is? Its the piece that has a screw hole in it, that holds the window felt in. It was spot welded to the quarter.
Did you think about how much of a pain it will be to reach in, and try to see where those few spot welds go at the lower front? Where it attaches to the rocker?
Some times its best to walk away from a project for a day, and get back to it in a day or two. It works for me. I get frustrated, and my brain is thinking all over the place, where I want to scream and say "fudge it!"
I come back later, rested and refreshed, and it all works out . Hang in there, and keep the Advil handy.lol
FlameOut Mar 23rd, 10, 7:32 PM Did a little more trial fitting today, and right now everything seems to be going pretty well. I got the trunk drop off fitting pretty good, but it's still going to tale a little persuading.
Terry, I did leave that little piece of metal, toward front of sail panel, although it's kind of bent up, so I'm not exactly sure how it's supposed to look. When I get to the other quarter, I'll have a better idea. It does look like it's going to be a royal pain welding the new quarter to the top of the rocker, but I think I should be able to fit my hand inside to attempt it
One thing I didn't do that I should have, was take accurate measurements for the deck lid bracket, the part that's welded onto the inner wheel well. I thought I had it close, with sheet metal screws, but when I did a test fit of the deck lid, I was WAY off. I have it real close now, and the trunk seems to be lining up well. The sail panel into the rear window channel is also looking good. I have heard so many horror stories about this repop stuff, but really so far none of my stuff was anywhere near as bad as I was expecting
For anyone attempting new wheel wells/quarters, BE SURE to take a photo/make a drawing of this area, and take as many measurements as you can, or better yet, somehow weld it to the floor with some tubing or angle iron

I'm also a little concerned about this area. Seems I took a little to much off of the roof, and there's a gap between the new quarters sail panel and the roof. Not sure what to do about it

I think I'm almost ready to start welding it into place, but I'm also a little afraid one I start, I'll find something wrong. When I do start welding, should I start in any particular area of the quarter?
jestico Mar 23rd, 10, 10:32 PM Your fit looks pretty good. Hard to tell the micro details from pics ?. I see you are doing a tail panel as well......Did you try the deck lid in place with the fender extension (tail light housing) on ? On mine the quarter recess where it wraps around the lid at the front is tight. Makes the trunk lid seem too long.
Also, how is the curve of the quarter where it meets the trunk lid along the side ? mine was too flat, compared to the lid. The lid kicks up in the middle as a result.
Sorry for all the peasky questions ! I am doing the exact same job right now.
Canadian67 Mar 24th, 10, 7:33 PM Did a little more trial fitting today, and right now everything seems to be going pretty well.
Bill regarding the second pic, when I put my quarters on they were the same way. Tried to adjust but as you will find out you can't fix that problem. I am going to put lead (lead substitute) in there anyway, so hopefully it won't be noticeable. Also I had a @#$% :angry:of a time welding the bottom of the quarter on to the rocker. I couldn't get the welding tip in there hardly and sure lost my cool a bit, lol. Good luck, and it looks great!!
65 SS Mar 25th, 10, 8:21 PM Have you had a door hung on there yet?
We just avoided the lead area and cut way below it.
Ron
FlameOut Mar 26th, 10, 8:56 PM After another dozen or so trial fits of my new quarter, I think I finally have it where it need to go. I have the inner and outer wheel housings welded together, and they are screwed tightly into place, and the quarter seems to fit the housing real nice. The body line also are looking really good. Maybe it's because my door has a Goodmark skin on it?
When I first hung the door, I had a 3/8" gap, but I now have to to around 1/4" and it looks good (to me at least). I'm hoping tomorrow I can get the wheel wells welded in place, and also weld in the quarter. I did find out it's really hard hanging a door by yourself. Probably wouldn't be as bad if I removed the galss
The trunk looks to be lining up real nice (the tail light housing is just sitting there, that's why there's a gap)

The body lines are lining up nice. The bottom of the door isn't shut tight, because it's being held shut with a bungie, and it's attached at the top

Indyspecracer Mar 26th, 10, 9:40 PM Bill,
I just browsed thru this thread for the first time. I really admire your ambition, particularly for a first timer. Thanks for all the photos and updates.:beers:
TerryAT Mar 26th, 10, 11:21 PM Bill, I am in the process of changing my pass. side quarter. Its a Dynamark quarter and I have to say the body lines are spot on, the lines are crisp and all my gaps are where I started at. After hearing stories of how some people said the body lines aren't crisp , I was concerned. But I am very pleased to how it looks so far just fitted onto the car.
I also had to replace the lip area on my outer wheel house. There is what looks like is a brace that is spot welded on the front half the wheel opening of the housing. Did you replace that on your housings? I'll probably replace mine, but I really dont see what the purpose of it is? The housing is solid as hell w/o it.
kh'67 Mar 27th, 10, 8:37 PM Nice work Bill
Tony65 Mar 27th, 10, 9:21 PM Looks great... I've gone and am going through similar issues on my El Camino...
Regarding the quarter to roof area.... Would it be possible to form a small patch and weld it on to the quarter panel prior to installing it... I would think it should be a pretty easy patch to form and easy to weld while off the car. The patched are could then be slid under the roof just like the rest of the panel. Basically just extending what goodmark forgot to add.

FlameOut Apr 1st, 10, 7:43 PM I have the driver side quarter all (well mostly all) welded into place. No turning back on this quarter now. Everything seems good, except now that it's all welded into place, the outer wheel housing is pushing against the quarter and pushing it out. It's just barely touching, but it's noticeable looking down the quarter. I'm not sure how to fix this problem. I tried hooking a ratchet strap to the top of the wheel housing, and connected the other end to the frame. It pulls it away, but it goes right back after I remove the strap

I also removed and temporarily set in place the new inner/outer wheel housing and new full quarter on the right side. I must say this side seems to fit better. Especially the wheel wells and trunk drop off. I'm not sure who stamped this quarter, but it feels heavier than the other side. The primer also looks different.

FlameOut Apr 5th, 10, 9:09 PM I now have all wheel housing and new quarters about 90% welded into place. I had to do a little modification to get the tail light housing to fit properly, but I'm happy with my progress. Next I have to replace the rear window to trunk panel. Looks like it's a pain to remove the original, but it has to be done :clonk:

sfbay67elky Apr 5th, 10, 11:39 PM Just read many of the major highlights of thread.
Way to go Bill. It will look amazing when done. Eyes on the prize.
Translation for the 25 and unders: "You gots mad skillz Willie. Props and respect. Peace."
sevt_chevelle Apr 6th, 10, 6:31 PM Bill, before you finish anything up I would throw the rear axle under that car and have the car resting at its normal ride height. Using a lift, that frame is experiencing different types of frame flex.
I would hate to see you weld all that metal up lower the car only to find your gaps have changed.
The reason why your wheel houses dont remain after you remove the straps is because you simply are not pulling the metal past its elastic deformation.
Every material has its point were it becomes deformed or breaks once you bend it past a certain point.
If you want to keep the metal in place you need to find its pivot point, see where the metal is twisting once you apply the pressure. To help keep the metal in place tap lightly around the pivot point with a rubber mallet, this vibrates the metal particles rearranging the formation. This particle rearrangement can place tension on the metal keeping the metal in place.
Your rocker panel to quarter gap can be corrected by simply marking the area needing correction then using a hammer and dolly to reform the bend.
FlameOut Apr 8th, 10, 5:17 PM Sevt, thanks for those tips. I did set the body onto jackstands, right where the wheels would be, before finishing up my welding. It is amazing how the gaps change though, supporting the frame in different positions. Even with everything welded, it still seems to have a little flex which changes the gaps a fraction, but all in all, I'm more than happy with how things are moving along. I owe a great deal of thanks to Ron, for helping me get the ball rolling.
I'm now working on rear window to trunk filler panel. I swear it was easier removing the full quarters than it was removing this piece. I have some photos, and I'll try posting some later. It will probably be a few day until I have this piece welded in though (I'm now working on attempting a rotisserie build)
kh'67 Apr 19th, 10, 7:47 PM Hey Bill, Any progress??
FlameOut Apr 19th, 10, 9:11 PM Hey Bill, Any progress??
Not to much in the past week. Seems I'm getting to that point again where I get frustrated thinking I'm never going to get done, so I go out into the garage, mess around for a bit then give up for the night.
I did get the filler panel between rear window and trunk in place (not welded). I was trying to figure out how the heck I'm going to weld the piece to the quarters, where they butt underneath right beside the deck lid hinges. Looks like it's going to be a real pain.
I did finish up all the welding on the floors and quarters. Now I just hope my welding holds. Was also working on adapting my body cart to a rotisserie, and I pretty much have it done. but I'm afraid to put my car onto it now (once again, not much trust in my welding abilities)
One thing I did do was buy a new compressor. A Quincy 5-hp 2 stage, so now I can using my sand blaster and blasting cabinet. It just got delivered about two hours ago (after a 5 week wait), so it's still not in operation

JohnC Apr 20th, 10, 2:24 AM Looks like your doing a great job Bill. It's interesting that you got the trunk floor dropoffs to fit so well. I've only done my PS but I thought the dropoffs were the most ill fitting repop piece I've ever seen. I had to dramatically change mine to get it to fit.
Let us see the rotisserie when you get done. I'd live to see how you put it together.
Your car looks great.
FlameOut May 3rd, 10, 7:06 PM Not much progress, well, not as much as I'd like. The panel between rear glass and trunk is in. Fit pretty well. Was a pain getting all of the packaging 'grease' off of it first.
Now I have a few questions. Does seam sealer go between the panel and the quarters? I'm guessing something has to.
I also got my rotisserie done, and it seems to work ok. I'm still a little leery using it.
Another question, is it always this much of a pain stripping paint down to bare metal? I swear it took a good hour just to do about a 1/4 of my roof, using a DA with 80 grit paper (you can see the (lack of) progress in the below photo)

Depends on the DA sander you have.
If you have one that operates in random orbit mode then yes. The random orbit mode is for finishing sanding like feathering out paint.
To strip paint you need a DA sander capable of operating in what is called grinder mode.
A popular choice for a TRUE da sander is the National Detroit DA or DAQ sander. I have the DA model.
If your sander does not have a move able weight on the bottom then am guessing you have a finishing sander and not a true DA sander.
A True DA sander can run in both random and orbital modes depending on how you position the weight on the bottom.
You want to strip some paint get this bad boy, its a Ingersol Rand 313 high speed sander that operates in grinder mode only. Ive stripped the entire outside of an late model F150 door in less then 5 mins with 80 grit.

sevt_chevelle May 3rd, 10, 8:00 PM if your sander looks something this you have a finishing sander and it WILL take you some time to strip paint.
This is a Dynabrade with a 3/16 orbit, meaning its a medium cutting sander. The larger the orbit the more aggressive the sander is and the more material it removes.
If your sander has a 5/32 orbit prepare for a long boring ride.

A National Detroit with a 3/8 orbit is one paint stripping machine.

FlameOut May 3rd, 10, 8:24 PM Thanks for the DA info Eric. I do learn something new every time I come here. The DA I am using is a cheap Husky from Home Depot. I'm not sure of the orbit, but it must be 5/32, because it is SLOW!!
I was checking some of the sanders you mentioned. Is this the National Detroit (http://www.sjdiscounttools.com/ndda6.html) model you were talking about? I haven't bought any new tools in a while, and today is my birthday, so what better excuse do I need
Tanis May 3rd, 10, 9:42 PM Hey Flameout I like how you done your rotisorie. What specs did you use to build it ? I have been looking for one to build and found a few. What was the cost to build that one ? If you could send me a copy on how you done yours ? Thanks Chris ..
You are doing one h... of a good job.... You have helped me on my 66 just by comming to your thread Thanks man keep up the hard work !!!
sevt_chevelle May 3rd, 10, 10:04 PM I was checking some of the sanders you mentioned. Is this the National Detroit (http://www.sjdiscounttools.com/ndda6.html) model you were talking about? I haven't bought any new tools in a while, and today is my birthday, so what better excuse do I need
I lied I have the DAQ model
http://www.nationaldetroit.com/tools/tooldetail.aspx?model=DA
http://www.sjdiscounttools.com/ndezls6.html
Either of the three models would work just fine.
The great thing about a TRUE da sander is that you have the ability to do some finesse sanding in the random mode then really strip some paint or even grind welds in the grinder mode by simply moving the weight over on the sander.
A finishing sander or palm sander like my Dynabrade is a great tool. I have the dynabrade, the DAQ, a gear driven 8in snap on mud hog, and the IR 313 high speed sander. Each one has its use.
For mechanical stripping on large surfaces I use the IR 313 because its a 8in pad.
Is this your sander Bill?
http://www.homedepot.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ProductDisplay?storeId=10051&productId=100678389&langId=-1&catalogId=10053&ci_src=14110944&ci_sku=100678389&cm_mmc=shopping-_-googlebase-_-D25X-_-100678389&locStoreNum=4928&marketID=164
Says its a 3/16 orbit which is fine IF it has the move able weight on the bottom. By reading the description it is just random orbital and not the a true dual action sander capable or being placed in grinder mode. That sander would take for ever to strip paint with but would make for a good feathering sander...Eric
FlameOut May 3rd, 10, 10:32 PM Chris, I found the rotisserie info online at autobody101.com (http://www.autobody101.com/rotisserie.php) I had previously purchased a used 'autotwirler body cart plus' (http://www.autotwirler.us/catalog/product_info.php?cPath=22&products_id=34&osCsid=f7343fcd3a57014818c0dd4f46705a81) from a TC member, and just bought the extra metal to convert it to a rotisserie. I probably have a total of about $600 into it
Eric, thanks again for the DA info. I was actually looking at that DAQ (http://www.thetoolwarehouse.net/p-3969-national-detroit-daq6.aspx). It was a few $ cheaper than the DA for some reason, so I'll probably just go with it, although the NDEZLS6 (http://www.thetoolwarehouse.net/p-3970-national-detroit-ezls6.aspx)also looks tempting, especially since it says "The EZLS excels in smooth, aggressive sanding, especially when working on thin, unsupported metal" Just what I need for my roof. With my current DA, it felt like it was going to dent it
BUBBA2711 May 5th, 10, 1:29 AM Bill i've got just two words to say. Wow and Wow!
FlameOut May 5th, 10, 4:10 PM Thanks Ron. I just finished with 2 coats of epoxy primer on my frame, and a coat of Eastwood Chassis black. Wasn't as easy as I thought it would be (pretty much my first time spraying) I think I may be in for more than I bargained for when I attempt to paint the entire car. I have a few runs, but it's only the frame, so no one will know but me :)
The black seems to get everywhere. Like it was a finer mist than the primer? I used the same gun for both, with a 1.4 tip
It says to wait at least 48 hours before handling, but I don't know if I can wait that long. I'd like to start assembling (my new 12 bolt rear, new front disc brakes etc etc)
I just hope I can remember where everything goes! I will need to purchase all new brake lines
FlameOut May 7th, 10, 9:40 PM Nothing more on the body, but got the frame painted, rear end in, front upper and lower control arms (springs were a real pain in the %$#) and disc brake setup. Had to temporally set the motor back into place, for weight, to install the stupid springs
My frame hanging, ready for paint

Canadian67 May 7th, 10, 11:56 PM Very Nice. I just got out of the garage from cleaning up my frame. Hope to put POR 15 on it tomorrow. Second time around with my frame, wasn't happy with the stuff that was suggested to me last time. Cleaning the frame once was bad enough, but twice!!! lol.
hottrodd64 May 8th, 10, 4:56 AM Very nice work, im in the process of gathering sheet metal for my 67 build, im in the same boat, needs quarters, wheel wells, roof panel, trunk, rear window to trunk filler, windshield channel patch, etc, You are motivating me, great work.
67kyle May 11th, 10, 12:21 PM I am loving your build and all of the pics your posting. Started to believe no one else was trying to restore a 67 as rusty as mine, but yours is rusted out almost exactly like mine. Except your making a lot more progress than I have the last 3 years I have owned it. Keep it up, def helps motivate me to go work on my project.
Keep it up,
Kyle
FlameOut May 15th, 10, 10:09 PM Finally got my replacement motor for my new Quincy compressor, so I was able to get a little more done to the body.
Finished sanding the roof with my new National Detroit DA. It worked better than the HD Husky I had, but it was still some work.
Also got out the epoxy primer and primed the underside and the firewall. Wasn't sure if I should have done the roof or not, since it's now just all bare metal. I wasn't as concerned doing the underside, but I don't want to mess up the roof or rest of the body.
How the heck do you guys get all of the dirt and dust out of the inside of the car before painting. I was tempted to use a hose with water, but I know that would be asking for trouble

Do I need to get every speck of paint off of the roof before priming?

bhigdon May 15th, 10, 11:22 PM I had trouble getting the trunk drop offs to fit right. Did you have any problems with this
FlameOut May 16th, 10, 9:06 AM I had trouble getting the trunk drop offs to fit right. Did you have any problems with this
Yes, they certainly weren't a perfect fit, but I got them to work. Used lots of clamps. It seemed like the right side was a better fir than the left though
Canadian67 May 16th, 10, 9:23 AM I had trouble with the passenger side, had to modify it a bit. Still need to finish it off, but the drivers side was a lot better. Good luck.
FlameOut May 26th, 10, 9:38 PM I got the body in it's first coat of epoxy primer today. Well, everything except the front clip.
I went with SPI (http://www.southernpolyurethanes.com/homepage.htm) for my epoxy, and 2k regular build epoxy. Also bought a gallon of reducer and a gallon of wax/grease remover from them.
Prepping the body was a real pain. I bet I wiped it down a dozen times with the wax/grease remover. Also went over the entire surface with either 80 grit, 120 grit or maroon scotchbrite pads. Cleaned with the wax/grease remover after the above scuffing.
Also received my $400+ in brake lines and fuel lines from RightStuff. Was hoping it would have been a little better of a fit.
Oh, I went with black for my epoxy, and gray for the 2k
One thing I didn't do yet was put in the oval drain plugs/covers. The bigger ones aren't a problem, but there are 2 in the trunk that are smaller, and I haven't been able to find them anywhere

Here's the rear brake line. Granted I didn't really play with it much, but I guess it's going to take a little tweaking to get it to fit.

bowkevin May 26th, 10, 11:17 PM Hey Bill, it's looking great. You've come along way! Keep us posted.
FlameOut Jul 14th, 10, 6:57 PM It's been a while since I posted any updates. Really doesn't seem like much additional has been accomplished, but I sure have been putting the hours in! Hoping to get her painted within the next few weeks. I was initially going to go with Marina Blue, but after spending $$$ on a gallon of Pro-Spray, I decided I wanted a different color, so now am going with Mulsanne Blue (1970 color) Bought a gallon of PPG DBC for close to $400
Installed gas tank yesterday and working on dash today, so it will be somewhat drivable when I am ready to paint. Installed my nice rebuilt tilt column. Fit like a glove, but there sure isn't much clearance between the rang joint and the headers!
I Just need to finish up the blocking now. What a pain and time consumer that is! Hoping to cut in all the jambs on Friday, then I can hang the doors and fenders.
I need to make some welds on my exhaust before I can install that, so hopefully I can get that done real soon also.

Rag joint clearance. Just enough that it doesn't hit the Headman Elite's (they fit nice!)

TerryAT Jul 14th, 10, 10:29 PM That must be the right color. I see a little smiley face in the paint on the lid.
Did you sand off all the EDP coating before you epoxied the panels?
FlameOut Jul 15th, 10, 7:44 PM No, I just scuffed up the EDP coating before priming. Checked it with lacquer thinner and it didn't come off, so I hope it's ok
rsanchez91 Jul 17th, 10, 3:49 PM great progress man! keep up the good work. your time and efforts will pay off soon!

BUBBA2711 Jul 17th, 10, 4:01 PM ps- im really jealous of your garage!!
Me too and i've been there.
FlameOut Jul 17th, 10, 4:07 PM Got the door jambs and stuff cut in last night. I'm still shooting for a couple weeks to have it painted, so that means I need to get it running real soon! Lots of little things keep screwing me up though. Like both front brake hoses going to calipers leak, no matter what I try.
Thanks Rich, I didn't think I'd be anywhere near this far if I didn't have the garage I have. One of my neighbors asked me if I do car inspections! I guess she sees me working in there, and with a lift and all, she assumed it was a business.
The paint actually looks better in person than it does in the photos. At least I think it does

TerryAT Jul 17th, 10, 6:51 PM Bill, Looks nice! What do you think of the color?
Btw. Do you also do emmisions?
Canadian67 Jul 17th, 10, 8:47 PM Wow Bill , it that looks awesome. If the paint looks better in person, I hope one day to see it.
BUBBA2711 Jul 17th, 10, 11:19 PM Terry no emissions yet. However he has one hell of a tire sale. 4 tires any size 29.99 installed!!!!
gasoline_fiend Jul 18th, 10, 10:19 AM Looks good so far!
Nice work.
FlameOut Jul 18th, 10, 3:45 PM Terry, I guess I like the color. Hard to say till I get the entire thing painted. I did want a little darker blue, but no way I was putting ford blue on my Chevy! No changing now I guess. Sorry, no emissions testing, only work on old muscle cars that don't need emissions testing :D
Ron, that tire sale ended. It was only good from 12:00 to 1:00 today :beers:
Ethan1 Jul 18th, 10, 4:18 PM Wow, looks great!

l:)l:) Good one.
FlameOut Jul 21st, 10, 7:04 PM She's Alive! After starting this restoration last October, my impatience kicked in, and I had to fire up my engine today. Engine didn't have to crank for more than a second and she fired right up after sitting for 9 months. Changed the oil and filter, but used the old plugs, for now. I primed the oil for a few minutes. Real good pressure. Had a few gremlins in the wiring, but got that taken care of. Also had to buy a new battery.
Still no power steering, due to no where to mount the reservoir yet, and also no vacuum line connected to the brake booster yet, so brakes aren't that great. Mufflers just temporally attached to the headers
EDIT: Sorry, I can't seem to get the video to work. Anyone know what I need to do to insert a video from Webshots?

I need to do the same. The downside is that it's hotter than Hades here. Very hard to get motivated to work in the garage when it's 105 outside!
Keep up the good work Bill. I can only hope to have mine fire by the end of summer.

FlameOut Aug 2nd, 10, 10:25 PM Thanks Phil, Doors, hood and deck lid are all on now, so she's ready for paint. Not real happy with the gaps on the drivers door, but not much I can do about it now. I know it was better when I test fit before welding on the quarter.
Hopefully will be getting a flat bed tomorrow to pick up and drop of at the body shop. With any luck, I'll have a nice almost new painted Chevelle back in my garage by the weekend
Canadian67 Aug 3rd, 10, 4:32 PM I hope my doors and hood and everything else line up too when I put mine together.
Way to go on the progress you've made. I've been watching your progress because we were keeping up with each other but I've been putting in to many hours at work recently and you've blown by me.
Good luck with getting it painted.

Well....? Its the end of the week. Anything to report on the status of the painting???
FlameOut Aug 14th, 10, 4:49 PM Well....? Its the end of the week. Anything to report on the status of the painting???
Well, nothing GOOD to report. Week started off with me finding out my basement, which I just remodeled 2 years ago, is full of mold, so that should be interesting (and expensive), then I find the roof on my house is leaking, then my wife loses her job, this is all before Wednesday. I keep thinking, well, at least I'll have my car back by Friday. Friday morning comes, no call, so I just wait. Around 4:00 Friday afternoon I drive by the shop where it's being painted. Shop is locked up an no one is around.
Now I'm starting to wonder if my car might now be in a different State, because I really didn't know this guy from Adam. I call and get his voicemail. Now I'm even more concerned. It's only insured for $12,000 and I have well over $20,000 invested at this point
Today I finally get in touch with him, and much to my surprise (yeah, right) he says he probably won't be able paint it until next Wednesday, and I should have it back by Friday.
Sorry for the ranting, but I'm kind of pissed right now. I probably rushed through restoring my car, hoping to have about 2 months of nice weather to drive before winter, but now it looks like I'll be lucky to have one month.
Hopefully next Friday I can post some photos
TerryAT Aug 14th, 10, 5:08 PM Sorry to hear about all your bad luck this week. Your story of the paint guy sounds like the beginning of my story of my Nova a few years ago. I ended up doing it all myself, after the guy tore it apart, snorted my $2k, I gave him to get started. .. I dont want to get into that story about that A-Hole. Still want to kick his azz. BTW, whats his first name?
64tempestwagon Aug 14th, 10, 5:39 PM I had around $12K into my 66 Chevelle including purchase price...took it to a body man paid around $5.5K and had the car body work actually go backwards...worse than when I took it there...only to sink another $5.5K into it and it's amost ready for paint!! Try not to think of the thief that stole the first 5.5K from me....

I cant tell you what to do, because I cant get the feel from the guy who is going to paint your car. But you can. If you feel that he is going to be pushing it aside making excuses, get it out of there, and back to your garage!. My expeience included all kinds of excuses, like to phone wasnt charged, and thats why he didnt answer, his dad was rushed to a hospital, uncle had a stroke,etc..ALL LIES.. At first I believed him, because my car was in his buddys garage. I didnt want to question and argue with him , since he had my car, and it was hard to get a hold of him. His buddy was never around , but my painter supposedly had a key. Wasnt true either. In the end, I was probably lucky to get the car back.
If you arent sure of this guy, pull it out now. I get the feeling that you were rushing to get in done for some cruising, but think about of all the money and headaches you've gone thru up to now. Apparently you arent thrilled with the door gaps, and some other things. Get your car and fix them to your satisfaction befor you paint it. Dont rush it just for a month or two of cruising .Forget this summer. If you get it painted and arent happy with cetain things, you will always regret not doing it right every time you look at it! Again, theres too much invested not to be totally satisfied in the end.
Just my thoughts. Good luck with everything!
Brian J Aug 15th, 10, 10:25 AM Sounds to me like you need to get your car back in your posession ASAP before it disappears
FlameOut Aug 15th, 10, 11:01 AM I'll be going to his shop on Tuesday to check on the progress. (I unfortunately have to work my 24 hour shift Monday, or I'd be going then)
When I talked to him yesterday, he said he had to fix a small dent in the lower fender. (Must have been REALLY small, I thought they were perfect) Found it while blocking, and he also wanted to try to correct some of the fitment problems. He insists he wants it to be perfect, because he's hoping to get more business after people see my car
He said he HAS to have it out of his shop by Friday, because he needs the space for a Mustang, MGB and a Cadillac all coming in for repairs/paint, so I'll get a better feel of whats really going on when I visit on Tuesday
zombie1969 Aug 15th, 10, 11:19 AM Get the car back before he tears it apart and comes up with some outragious bill if you dont think you can trust him.I had a nightmare with a super clean camero that needed some small things fixed and to be blocked out and it took 10mos and 13k to get it back.Labor and paint only.Original estamate 3mos and 8-9k.Lot of crooks out there when they get a cash job.Half the insurance jobs Ive had done werent done acording to what the invoice says either. Its not like a water pump when all you do is open the hood and say yup theres a new pump.Spray a little primer and right up a bill for all sorts of labor and you cant prove otherwise how long was spent working on it unless your standing there. And keep in mind they dont care if you cant pay the bill because they would like nothing more than to keep you car/finish it off and sell it.They have a licance to steel.
TerryAT Aug 15th, 10, 11:38 AM Did you know he was going to do more work on it, or was he just supposed to paint it? I cant see anyone doing extra$ for nothing.
I'd make sure he gave me a price on fixes, beforehand. You decide if they get fixed, since you thought the car was ready for paint.
I know this is your first resto, and maybe he does see some things that can be better, but that can lead into more and more $$$, especially if he wants his name on the job once done.
Again, I dont know of your conversations back and forth, but I would think if I dropped a car off to get painted, I would expect it just painted. As it came in. No other work, unless specified.
PM me the shop doing your work.
FlameOut Aug 15th, 10, 10:42 PM I knew he was going to do some minor work once he got it into his shop, mainly where my new full quarters joined at the roof line. I thought I had them pretty well, but he showed me I didn't, and he said he can't see painting unless it was perfect in that area.
He was coming to my garage after he worked in his shop all day, and we decided it would be easier if he just had it in his shop. He said it's hit #1 priority right now, so I hope it is
FlameOut Aug 17th, 10, 8:25 AM I stopped by the shop right after I got off of work this morning. I was a little worried about what I would, or wouldn't find. Much to my surprise, he was finishing up the blocking, and is planning to paint tomorrow, and buff Thursday. I'll still believe it when it happens.
He did ask if I could bring down the door glass and install. Something about the mess when he buffs, but I started thinking is it really a good idea to put the glass in before painting? Don't the outside door handles need to be installed before the glass? And also, the wing window would also cause problems for painting
I'm going to stop down later, and hopefully I can talk him out of needing the glass in (besides, I'd rather do that in my garage, because I know it's going to be a real pain in the %$&)
So with any luck, I can post some painted photos in a few days, and by next week some photos with all my trim on
There's a big car cruise about a mile from my house on Thursday. I'm kind of upset I can't enter my car. There seem to be very few 67's in my area for some reason
TerryAT Aug 17th, 10, 9:16 PM Glad to see progress and not a rip off story. I honestly dont know what the glass has to do with buffing. The handles dont have to be installed with the glass, and finally, The wing window could be masked prior to painting. I did it with my 66 Nova, and you would of never known the glass wasnt removed before paint.
There is another 67 in your area!:D But you wont see it until next year.

Well, any luck with the paint? :)
FlameOut Aug 22nd, 10, 10:00 AM Well, any luck with the paint? :)
Just bad luck. Still waiting  I'd have been driving my car weeks ago if I painted it myself like I had planned (I know for a fact I could have done it, it just might not have been perfect)
The painter was blaming my SPI products, blaming the heat and humidity, family problems etc..
First he didn't like the SPI reducer I supplied to be used with my gallon of PPG DBC. Then for the clear, I tried to explain to him the data sheet says to wait exactly 30 minutes between coats. His reply was 'clear is clear'. The day after shooting 4 coats of clear, it still wasn't cured enough to cut an buff, so I don't know what happened...
Also had a bad spot of base coat on deck lid, and of course the entire gallon of paint was already gone, so had to get another half pint, and what a surprise when it didn't match! This was Friday, and now cant get more paint until Monday
So now, I'm hoping to have my car Wednesday, but not expecting it until the 3rd Wednesday of 2011
TerryAT Aug 22nd, 10, 12:32 PM Sorry to hear about the problems. But I would of used PPG reducer with PPG paints, not intermix 2 different brands. Not sure if it made a difference, but to be on the safe side thats what I would of done.
If the clear isnt cured yet, maybe the hardner was old. ?? I wouldnt trust an open can of it for more than a month. I had a similar problem a few years ago with House of Kolors clear/activator. The clear on the paint would seem rubbery. A fingernail mark could be madein it, but eventually it would disappear. It ended up that my activator was old and I had to start over. A lesson learned the hard way. Hopefully your situation is different.
Also,Tell the painter tech sheets are printed for a reason, and should be followed to a T. And its on his shoulders should a problem arise from his mistake. Good Luck
sevt_chevelle Aug 22nd, 10, 2:52 PM Ive done SPI reducer in PPG DBC basecoat several times without problems.
Any painter worth his weight knows clear is NOT clear. PPG's DC3000 acts totally different then their 2062 and if you dont follow the recoat guidelines you'll have a mess on your hands...Eric
69moneypit Aug 22nd, 10, 11:41 PM Hey guys,
I hope you guys don't mind me chiming in here but I hope you will be checking on your car daily or have a friend do it if you are unavailable, he sounds a little shady. I am just starting a similar project on a 69' and it is my first major project so it is greatly appreciated that you took the time to keep this thread updated. It gives guys like me the confidence to stop staring at it and start cutting.
There is a wealth of info and pics here.
thanks.
Kawickrice Aug 26th, 10, 12:02 PM Nice build. You are unknowingly motivating me
FlameOut Aug 28th, 10, 9:37 PM Finally!!! After starting this restoration this past October, and 3 weeks waiting to get painted, I finally got my car back from paint at about 5:30 this afternoon (Minus the deck lid - long story) It also has a few small imperfections
I still have lots of work to do, but I'm hoping to take it to a local cruise this Friday (One of, if not the biggest, weekly cruise on the East Coast) Should have well over 2000 cars since it's the final cruise of the year, and it's Chevy Night!! :hurray:

Tony65 Aug 28th, 10, 10:32 PM Looks like you made a lot of progress in the few hours since it was offloaded... no wonder you've got so much done since October.... It looks great, keep up the great work.
TerryAT Aug 29th, 10, 6:12 AM Bill, Its looking great so far. I guess now I'll have to get out to Wexford to look it over. You probably know, that if you want a good spot in the lower lot, you HAVE to go out there very early!
BTW, Are you ready for another project?:D
Canadian67 Aug 29th, 10, 8:28 AM Wow Bill that looks SWEEEETTTTT!!!!!
67kyle Aug 29th, 10, 2:01 PM That looks nice, I hope you enjoy it. Now I need to start saving my money and get my 67 looking like that
FlameOut Aug 29th, 10, 6:21 PM Bill, Its looking great so far. I guess now I'll have to get out to Wexford to look it over. You probably know, that if you want a good spot in the lower lot, you HAVE to go out there very early!
BTW, Are you ready for another project?:D
Thanks for all of the compliments. I certainly couldn't have done it without the help of Team Chevelle and Ron.
I'm starting to wonder if I'll make it to Wexford now . I still need to get my windshield replaced, looks like I need 4 new tires (The 225-70-15's I have now are hitting the fender when I turn) and need to finish installing glass, and remainder of weatherstrip. Also need to attach the trim to the drip rail. I'm not even sure how to go about that!. I'm sure going to try to make it to Wexford though
I went to put the weatherstrip around the doors today, and was wondering why it wasn't even close to fitting. It's for a 69-72!. I bought a 'kit' back on July 6th. I'm not even sure the roof rail weathrstip is correct. I threw the package away a few weeks ago when I opened it. My receipt says 67, so it wasn't me that messed up, but it might be to late to return it. Might just hit Luttys tomorrow and spend another $60
hknladdr Aug 29th, 10, 9:45 PM Great build thread! Thanks for taking the time to post all the pics and descriptions along the way.
Russtea2 Sep 2nd, 10, 7:19 PM Bill
relax, the car looks great, but from what I see on all the local stations, rain is in the air, and I don't think you want to do that! I know it's Chevy night and everything, but not worth soaking your car for.
Been following your progress, and it is quite impressive.
Just a note from a Slippery Rock neighbor!
FlameOut Sep 2nd, 10, 7:43 PM Thanks Mark, I've been watching that weather also. It's been dry as a bone for a week, and now the biggest cruise of the year and a chance of rain. (Scattered thunderstorms) Looks like it supposed to pass by 6 pm, but then again, when are weather stations ever right?
I still don't have my deck lid back though. I'll be calling him first thing tomorrow. I was supposed to have it Tuesday. I'm not sure who I hate more, body guys, car salesmen, or lawyers
TerryAT Sep 2nd, 10, 10:22 PM Hey. If it rains, I believe they have next Friday as a rain date. Gives you a little more time to get it together.
zombie1969 Sep 2nd, 10, 11:38 PM The car's looking great man.I keep telling myself this will be the year my car see's paint 9 years and counting.Looks like you went through that thing pritty good so take your time with the finals thay'll be other shows.Mayby someday Ill see that thing in Englishtown NJ if you go to that one.
BUBBA2711 Sep 3rd, 10, 11:50 AM That test drive was a blast on tuesday with your chevelle. The only thing that could top it for me would be driving mine.:hurray:
John_Auberry Sep 6th, 10, 7:49 PM coming together nicely!!!
Russtea2 Sep 7th, 10, 12:33 PM Bill
did they have Starlite last Fri? Just wondered how you made out! Weather was iffy at best up north!
runyanjay Sep 7th, 10, 2:02 PM did you do all your trunk and floor repair first then the quarters? I have similar job ahead of me. have the body off the frame and concerned about things moving on me
FlameOut Sep 7th, 10, 6:31 PM Mark, yes. Did the trunk, then floors, then fitted the quarters (but didn't weld them yet) then fitted inner and outer wheel housing along with quarters, then lots of clamping and sheet metal screws. Then spot welded the wheel houses in a few places, re-fitted the quarters, finished welding the wheel houses, then finally hung quarters
Mark, weather turned out great for the Wexford cruise. We got there a little late, because I never got my deck lid on until around 6 pm that evening. I got stuck parking on an end row, and most people seemed to congregate toward the inner rows
Here's one shot of my car. I think if you click on it, you can view some of the other photos from the cruise

Pete 67 Sep 7th, 10, 10:03 PM The car looks great Bill! Congrats! :beers:
Russtea2 Sep 9th, 10, 7:28 AM Bill
thanks for sharing pics of your ride, and the others from the cruze....really pack em in down there, don't they?
I hit the bike nite at Quaker Steak a few weeks back when they raffled the bike off (my son is a bouncer there)......Starlite makes that look miniscule by comparison!
My congrats to you and your excellent efforts at "thrashing" and getting 'er done!
Enjoy the cool, dry weekends ahead...at least, they are my favorite time of the year to cruze it out!
dgwar Dec 19th, 10, 11:39 PM Got a little more done.
28902
Please go into detail about removing the wheel housings, like how you did it and how you would do it now that you know how it is done. I am about to do this on my 67.
Alwhite00 Dec 20th, 10, 5:45 AM Great thread, Great job on the car-
LK
rjt427 Dec 20th, 10, 8:28 AM Hey Bill great car and story,I am in the process of doing a 66 ,your car looks great. I go to wexford cruise every Friday night, I have some friends with cars that are there all the time. I will have to come over and check out your car in person. Do you go to the cruise all the time ?
JNorton Dec 20th, 10, 11:33 AM Wow, great thread. I just stumbled aacross this one today and made sure to save it. I'm in the midst of the same thing with my 72, and it's been very encouraging for me reading this. There was some great information in there and I learned a lot from the quick read that I did today. Thanks to everyone for contributing to a great thread. That's what this forum is all about!
FlameOut Dec 21st, 10, 10:06 AM Please go into detail about removing the wheel housings, like how you did it and how you would do it now that you know how it is done. I am about to do this on my 67.
It's just that there are tons of welds that needed to be removed. I drilled what I could and used an air chisel on the rest. Looking back, it wasn't as hard as it seemed, just time consuming.
The one thing to watch for is BE SURE your driver side quarter panel clears the outer wheel housing!! It's a very tight fit. I thought I had everything lined up perfectly (Probably had the wheel housings (Inner and outer) and the full quarter on and off dozens of times checking the fit, but after it was all welded into place, I could see a very slight bulge in the quarter where the wheel housing was touching. I finally got it taken car of with lots of heat from my torch, and a ratchet strap.
One thing I've learned, is to be patient, and make sure everything fits as it should before welding (I wasn't as patient as I should have been, and it shows, if you know where to look)
I had a little problem also with my deck lid not fitting properly once I installed the weather stripping. I'm still not sure how to go about fixing this problem.
Good luck with your project! :beers:
FlameOut Dec 21st, 10, 10:11 AM Hey Bill great car and story,I am in the process of doing a 66 ,your car looks great. I go to wexford cruise every Friday night, I have some friends with cars that are there all the time. I will have to come over and check out your car in person. Do you go to the cruise all the time ?
Hi Bob, thanks for the compliments :beers: I make it almost all of the Wexford shows, but unfortunately miss a few due to my work schedule. The only one I had my finished car at last year was the final one, Chevy Night :hurray: but did make it to a lot of them, the help light a fire under my butt to finish my car (Nothing like going to a car cruise knowing your car is at home in pieces, to get you motivated)
rjt427 Dec 21st, 10, 6:05 PM Hey Bill I will come over at the cruise and say hi, I want to look at your car it looks great.
driller Dec 21st, 10, 6:38 PM Very Nice!!
Malibulvr Jan 7th, 11, 3:05 AM Loved reading through this whole thread, nice job, love the color!!
FlameOut Jan 7th, 11, 10:35 AM Thanks Curt and Mike. I unfortunately got carried away a few weeks ago and ripped out the entire interior again, along with removing the deck lid and cut out my trunk to tail pan braces to repair them a bit better. I also installed some roller tip rockers, removed the power steering pump etc etc. I have a few months though to get her all put back together. I also need to repaint my deck lid
lucky3 Jan 16th, 11, 5:24 PM Looks good i'm going through a similar thing with my car also.
peterskin Jan 17th, 11, 12:46 AM Damn! Just skimmed through this entire thread...MAJOR props to you on this build! I've never had to deal with anything like you've delt with! When I had my 64 blasted, the only rust I had was the trunk pan ( 2 sections )...4 hours of remove & replace! You're the man dude! Killer work bud! Oh & I dig the chick in the shop, lol!
