: The 496 Build Has Officially Started

I just scored an Eagle forged crank for my very first item. My builder, who is working on a race only Monza for himself, bought two cranks from a friend of his and was nice enough to sell me one at a great price. The really nice thing is I'm in no hurry, and I'm just piecing things together until I have everything. I'll just enjoy my 396 until then.

Next big ticket item is a block. And the hunt begins!

I'm in the same boat, I have a set of 781 heads that I have started working on and a 067 intake already bought. I have a block located I can buy cheap, it has a small crack low in one cylinder, I will have to put a sleeve in it if I buy it. The 496 will be a BIG step up from the 375 hp 350 that is in the '69 now........may be awhile....I can't wait......hoping for around 425-450 hp and some low rpm torque.....

Sorry for the high-jack...LOL....good luck with the build.....

Ricky, 425-450 will mean a really small cam in a 496! You should get 550, no problem, and still have a nice streetable motor.

fwiw....I put a 496 in place of my original 396 last year. it is a 10.7:1 motor. made 607 hp > 627 ft.lb. on the engine dyno. was built from a '68 427 4 bolt main motor by sputs racing engines in minnesota. comp cam solid ft cam xs290s. edelbrock oval ports. stealth, 850 dp..
feels like 2 of the 396/325 hp motors in it now !!

I was thinking the 067 ('69 cast stock intake) would keep me from making much more than 500 hp......but anything over 475 hp would be icing on the cake......LOL
