Does any one make a reproduction of the original lug nut for the 69-70 wheel?

I just wish somebody would repo the "Assembly line correct" Nuts. The GM and repo ones that have been out there for years are close but not exact......

I understand that the originals have the tall crown. All the newer stuff has the low crown. GM used them on their trucks with rally wheels into the '80s.

Keith,

You are right; the absolute originals had the tall crown, available NOS have the short one. Repops are short and the contact area with the wheel is less than the original. I avoid the repops when I can. I don't believe they are safe, especially if the lug holes are a little worn.

Less than the bearing surface of the originals! That was the biggest problem with the originals in the first place. In the '80s GM used somewhat similar lug nuts with a BIG taper on their aluminum half ton truck wheels. They are what I use on my factory wheels that I use on the street. Most all the SS wheels that I have seen in the past few years have the pounded out enlarged holes. Guys actually want money for them and play dumb when you point out that the wheels aren't safe. Here is a side by side comparison of the old style lug nuts. Actually, the crown isn't taller but rather the hex is shorter......or whatever. ;)

Heres a pic of what I'm talking about. From the left,Original "Assembly line correct" capped nut 3/4,middle is current original GM and re-pop offering 3/4, and last, GM and re-pop larger 13/16 to better fit rounded out holes. DK.......

I wish to thank all for the responce but, the lug nut in on photos are not the ones I'm looking for... I'm trying to locate the 70 SS wheel lug nuts... I know they were also use on the pontiac rally wheels too... They are flat on the end with a black vinyl center, and two grooved around the shaft...

You're confused.
Pontiac used the black and red cap insert type lug nuts on the Rally II wheels 1967?-1972?. Common in 1968-70.
The correct 1970 Chevelle SS wheel lug nuts are in the pictures above.

The above look like the shorter ones. Notice the careful perspective of the photos! I think the winner will be in for a surprise when someone points it out during a show. I wonder what a set of NOS "real" original ones would go for?

Truly incredible someone would be so ignorant to pay that !! If you compare those next to the $1 re-pops, You simply -Can-Not- tell them apart. Incredible deal for the seller,Laughing All the way to the bank, And, at the poor guy he took to the cleaners.

I'm no machinist but interested in anyone's thoughts on this suggestion...
Could original appearing lug nuts be machined from stainless?

You can machine just about anything but it would not be cost effective IMHO.

BTW,if anyone's interested here's a person that actually restores/fixes the 69 & 70 chevelle ss 396 wheels that many of which have worn/blown out lug holes which is an issue with the majority of these wheels still being passed arround, ebay etc.

It's not cheap but if you have a matched set of wheels for a #'s matching chevelle its likely worth it,here's his contact info:

BTW,with the higher cost of wheel resto vs repop ss wheels in mind I saw a super nice 1970 chevelle L34 396/350hp 4spd with no ac go for 65k on Barrett Jackson . Now thats not an L78/L89/LS5/LS6 chevelle either that would typically bring more $ if they were also #'s matching in same cond. So in cases like resto's of original cars like these etc the cost for complete wheel resto/repant/lug hole reapir of $1,200 + - (depending on # of lug hole to be repaired) is justified vs reopop wheels at approx $600 that are not #'s matching
