: Please help my quarters cheaply.
Zane Jan 14th, 10, 1:12 PM I basically have a heap, that has a chance to look ok.
Heap as in, fiberglass trunk, seats welded in(yes seat caught fire;)) etc etc
The quarters need help, cheap help.
Do you know the cheapest half quarters out there, any specials going on?
Should I buy for car other than chevelle, maybe they are cheaper?
Or should I just fill it with putty again, trust me they are bad, I could reach in the trunk from the well(filled with spray foam to stop fumes etc)
Just a poor man looking to get my ride on the road again, need this fixed for state inspection.
Any tips or links would be great, I am not a big car guy so lacking alot(the most) in the body repair area.

Zane,
I totally get where you're coming from and I know exactly what you want to achieve. I've been there (still there in some ways!). Your best bet is to get your hands on an National Parts Depot catalog or go on their website (they're in North Carolina, so shipping is less painful) and get an idea of the quarter skins you need. Then go to a local auto parts store which carries auto body supplies. Find out if they have panel adhesive and ask if they can give you a little education about it. Also do some research here on that topic. You may want to send a PM to TC member MARTINSR, he's a fountain of knowledge on this subject. You may end up being able to cut off your panels, bond new ones in place, and smooth the seams with a good filler like Rage. I am no expert by any means, and many others will reply wiht their feedback, but if your goal is to get something that's roadworthy I think you'll do fine.
Good luck and keep us posted.

maniac1972 Jan 14th, 10, 11:50 PM Yes lets see some pictures. I too have a 65 in progress, on the cheap. In fact I got a set of rear quarter patch panels of a guy. I am not going to use them as the lip is too big, it more matches the fender. Say if you go with the panel adhesive check out v8tvshow.com, they are doing a 65, it is very good to watch all the body work they have done. It is cool because they do so many aspects on one car.
Good luck I too am going with more of a "preservation" than a restoration right now do to funds. So I feel your pain.

67shovel Jan 15th, 10, 8:23 AM If it's a heap and your on the cheap you could just fiberglass it up.
Zane Jan 17th, 10, 9:20 AM Thx for the tips and links, I spose fiberglass is not outta the question(I figured if I ever got paid I would replace most parts with that anyway)
I will take a couple pics, make sure you do not eat before viewing ;)
(rain delay on the pics)
Zane Jan 25th, 10, 2:22 PM Be careful if u have a weak stomach, rought stuff. Shiny rim side, I think must have a new qp. What do you think about the crappy rim side? Also, is this side trim original? 65 283 2dr malibu

Malibulvr Jan 25th, 10, 2:35 PM I threw up a little in my mouth...lol
sleeper67 Jan 25th, 10, 2:48 PM I would say replace both quarter panels for sure. About $200 each side for new skins. Have somebody cut off the old ones and weld on the new ones. I know it's not cheap, but really the only thing that can be done at this point. Don't waste your money on filling/fiberglassing the rust now. It wont help. Just be patient, save money, and fix it when you can afford to. You will be happier, and you wont have to redo it again later. Good luck. I'm not sure about the side trim, looks like aftermarket stick on stuff from a plastic roll.
Brettd85 Jan 25th, 10, 3:19 PM He will need more than quarters! Thats alot of rust. Nothing is going to be cheap about that repair. :(

Right on the money! That is a typical rust belt car that has been used heavily in the salt. There will probably be a lot more hidden rust on that car...I would question the condition of the frame before I spend any money on body repairs.
Have some car guys check it out to get the big picture on needed work.
Zane Jan 25th, 10, 11:36 PM Good one lvr :)
Frame and all seems ok, checked it out when I had the exhaust put on. Good amount of newer parts hidden under the funk.
My dad got it as a parts car around 85, what was left after he did the other 65 was enough and good enough to justify putting it back on the road.
Just the rear end of this thing, body wise is rough, trunk, tank straps were all shoddy, guess the salt like mentioned, it has been in MD and VA forever. I drove it daily from 95-2000, till the og 283 finally gave up.
It is a fairly sound car overall, I got all new front end parts for it and gonna add front discs, all for saftey really, just this cancer it has needs something. Maybe a new wheel well shape, just cut it all out.
What would fender flares look like I now wonder??? Yeah right ;)
Do they sell partial inner wells, the one side is that bad?
Zane Jan 27th, 10, 9:30 AM Hey Sleeper
Where are the $200 skins sold?
Much cheaper than $1200 qp's.
Thx
sleeper67 Jan 27th, 10, 10:05 AM They are in my 'ground up' parts catalog. Their website is www.ss396.com. They also have factory style quarter panels for $400 each.
Zane Jan 28th, 10, 10:03 PM I think that would work.
They just go right over whats there right?
Weld the edges and playdough the seam I assume.
I think with some metal and a hammer I can make some wheel well patches.
