Can I find out what gears I have in my rear end by the VIN? Somebody said there is a tag on it. I'm not sure what's in it. It is a 66 malibu with a 283 and powerglide. Thanks for the input.

The VIN will tell you nothing about the gears.
Look on the front of the axel tube facing the front of the car on the passanger side, between the wheel and the pumpkin, you might need to wire brush to see it, but there are a series of letters and numbers that will tell you what the gears would be. post them and someone will decode them, better yet post those letters and numbers in the Tag Team section and you should get an answer shortly.

Or you can mark the tire and mark the driveshaft. After jacking up the rear end spin the tire 10 revolutions while counting the number of times the drive shaft rotates. If the drive shaft rotates approx 35 times then you have 3:55's if it rotates 37 times you have 3:73's 41 equal 4:10's etc etc.
