OK, here's one from the novice. How can I tell if my belts need replacing. Dont seem to see any cracks, however they probably could be tightened a bit? Any hints or suggestions? Thanks in advance...

I believe Gates recommends changing belts and hoses every 5 years on cars that don't see a lot of mileage. I follow this guideline because the usual signs of wear (cracks, inside edges polished smooth, rubber hardening) don't show up when you only drive a car 3-5000 miles a year. I look at it as cheap insurance for longer trips! Do yourself a favor and keep your old belts in the trunk just in case you need them when you are out in the middle of nowhere.

If the belts are over 4 yrs old or if you just got the car and don't know how old they are, I would change the belts out. Old belts can look fine right up until they bbreak. Consider it cheap insurance.
