: 71 Sandlewood SS El Camino?
david bull Jan 10th, 10, 9:22 AM Has anyone seen a 71 SS in sandlewood? My 71 custom was ordered in this color with 350/270,th350,tach&gauge pkg,f-41,ps,ac,2:73.I am in the process of converting it into an SS and since it is all original(71k mi) I want to have the option of converting it back if I so desire. Were any built in this color?DBULL
zookpr Jan 10th, 10, 11:01 AM You will have to loose the lower bright trim and silver paint accent - SS models did not include this even though they are a custom cab model. Body color extended over the entire body to the rockers. Factory trim was attached with welded studs which will need to be removed. What is the color code for Sandelwood in box 79 of your build sheet?
elcam Jan 10th, 10, 11:15 AM Speaking of lower silver paint colour-when did custom or 13680 bodies- non SS get the silver lower body colour applied? Would the main body colour be under this? Thanks
david bull Jan 10th, 10, 11:27 AM Code in box 79 is 61 61 -19.Interior is bench in sandlewood in mint condition(even oe carpet). The silver accent rocker stripes appear to have been applied after body paint. Thanks DBULL
Robinls5 Jan 10th, 10, 11:45 AM When I ordered my 70 LS-5/ M-22 El Camino I ordered F-41. A few days later the dealer called and said F-41 is NOT an option on any 70 El Camino.
Are you sure it has F-41? Do you have the build sheet? You may have something. Did it change in 71? P.S. SS El Caminos used only the 13680 bodys.

david bull Jan 10th, 10, 11:51 AM Bob, you're right! It's f-40 heavy duty f&r.DBULL
chevelle hunter Jan 10th, 10, 12:14 PM you guys i think are right on the f 40 swaybar,i just was out at my local junkyard and there is a 70 ss elcamino,i bought the rear last year 12 bolt non posi 331,kick panels, big block steering shaft,i went to grab the front sway bar and it not the large one like mine.did they only make 2 sizes?large and the common one?this car is original and has the small one
david bull Jan 10th, 10, 12:31 PM Box 21stab bar on build sheet has 499. which means .499"?The f-40 is listed on the bottom with the option codes.I believe all 13680 models were called customs and SS was an option package.DBULL

elcam Jan 10th, 10, 7:03 PM Thanks for the reply in regards to 13680 (custom) -non SS lower silver paint .Another question, would anyone who has an original, known 70-72 SS(13680) have any evidence of silver lower paint under body colour? Thanks
Robinls5 Jan 10th, 10, 10:39 PM My 70 SS 454 M-22El Camino that I ordered in Feb. of 1970, Built the second Wk. of March (Balt ) I left the dealership in the first week of April 1970.
I remember a RED 70 SS 396 El Camino sitting in the showroom at Sahli Chevrolet in Feb. of 70. I ask the salesman " Bill Riddle ". Is this what mine will look like. He said YES.... This 70 SS Camino had the silver paint on the lower front fenders--doors--Quarter panels. It had a Tan interior. Dont know if there is a story or was a story. I just remember it had silver paint.

elcam Jan 10th, 10, 11:19 PM Thanks for the reply Bob. What I had wondered though, was if anyone ever found evidence of silver paint under body colour of known SS 70-72 Camino, meaning if some 13680 bodies destined to be SS cars, were first painted silver on bottom, then covered with body colour. The car you saw must of had the lower chrome trim on like a normal 13680 Custom non SS to seperate the 2 colours?
zookpr Jan 11th, 10, 3:58 PM Thanks for the reply Bob. If there was silver applied it would have been an accident. The factory studs on which the custom lower trim is attached are welded type and could therefore the body could not receive an SS solid paint scheme leaving these studs exposed. These studs must be ground off. Also, why would GM waste the paint?
Robinls5 Jan 12th, 10, 11:34 AM Just a thought, At the MD. ACES show two years ago there was a black 70 SS 396 El Camino that had the chrome trim on the doors, fenders,Quarters. The Camino had a lot of power Accs. Not sure but I believe it had " Papers "
Tom R. ( Blue SS 454 )would remember the Camino. Or some of the MD. guys. Not sure about rocker mlds. But it did have the trim running the length of the body also it was a 13680 body.
NOTE:
If you look at the 1970 El Camino Dealership flyers (They were printed in Aug. 1969 ) You will see some of the Caminos have NO door frames. I just dug out my origional 1970 dealership flyer. On page one is a gold 13680 " Custom " with the silver bottom. Page two: The Camino on top is a gold one with NO side trim, No Door frame trim, White stripe tires with two small stripes and Full D. hub caps.
The white 70 SS 396 on Page two has the FULL LENGTH trim starting just above the the front corner lamp and ending at the rear bumper. It also has the Alum. trim under the headlights and a THIN white stripe on the tires. Page five: Shows the interior of a Gold/Tan SS 396 with a console. THIS IS AN SS 396 it also has a WOODGRAIN dash and a WOODGRAIN steering wheel & NO DOOR FRAMES.
On the back, The drive trains and some options are listed. Tire sizes are listed as such---E-78X14 (6 Cyl.)
F78X14--V-8 Mdls
G-70 X14 White Stripe with SS 396
I would guess in Aug. of 69 Chevrolet was NOT SURE what a 70 SS 396 El Camino would look like, Also the 454 engines are not listed in this literature.
AND this literature has a disclamer on the bottom.
Now shall we continue with our thoughts on what is right and what is wrong........ HELL Chevy was not sure what they were going to build?
