is it possible to test my temp. and fuel guage while I have them out and on the bench. Iam restoring my dash and I dont want to put it back together to find out my guages dont work. Thanks, Bob

you can use a AA battery with wire soldered to each end and connect to
the terminals and see if the guages move that is what I did to check my fuel guage on 69 when I was trying to find out if it was the guage or sending unit

Thanks Greg, Iam gonna try using different voltages and see if I get different readings. Do you think if I use a AA and then a 9 volt the guage should show different readings. Would this be correct. Or does anyone think this is not a good idea. Thanks, Bob

If you're going to this much trouble, you should have them calibrated, IMHO. Just because they move when you test them doesn't mean they are reading correctly.

Any DIY calibration tips?

I got nothing. I plan to send mine out to somebody when I get to that point.

Off the top of my head (so check elsewhere) most fuel gauges read from a sender that varies from 0-240 ohms.

If you are going to test on the bench, use your 12v battery, not a 9v or 1.5v.

You might be able to use a variable resistor, like a rheostat (old dimmer switch) to simulate the sending unit. Check it's resistance with an ohmeter at the appropriate settings.
