Looking to pickup a 12 Bolt locally for $200. Then having a SHOP rebuild it.
Looking for a shop too in the Chicagoland area if anyone knows a reliable place.

Just debating if it's going to be worth the effort to get this and have it
rebuilt with a NEW Eaton Posi and 3.73 gears and a new set of axles.
I have no idea what shops charge for this sort of thing.

I was hoping Freddie or someone could chime in on this.
Maybe give me a ball park estimate using a Eaton Posi, and what stuff I would need.
Swapping it into a 1970 Olds 442 with a 12 Bolt "O" axle in it now.
Car isn't going to be for drag racing. Mostly summertime fun family
cruising with some grunt out of the hole. Rocket 350/TH350 soon to be
pulled for an OD trans....not sure which yet. Max HP/torque it will see is 450-500
tops.

So far this is what I'm looking at (I think)
$200 69 Chevelle 12 Bolt.
$399 Eaton Posi carrier 3.08-3.73 (http://completeoffroad.com/i-123059-eaton-posi-gm-12-bolt-pass-car-3-08-3-73.html)
$175 Richmond 3.73 gear set (http://www.summitracing.com/parts/RMG-4900391/)
$95 12 Bolt 65-72 Rear axle rebuild kit (http://www.drclassic.com/catalog/Camaro/Suspension/K00089-R.html)
1330 Yoke.... ??
Axles, ?? Not sure , used or new.
Strip and Powder coat ?

Labor ?? If anyone would help fill in the blanks that I'm missin that would be
appreciated. Trying to get a build sheet to see what I'm getting into here.

I had my 8.5" 10-bolt rebuilt a couple months ago -- new posi, gears, bearings, seals, axles, and T/A rear cover for ~$1370 at DTS in Detroit. I cleaned up and painted the axle, then dropped it off and picked it up a few weeks later. 12-bolt prices should be in a similar ballpark:

Posi Unit ~$400
R&P ~$200
Install Kit ~$90
Axle Bearings&Seals ~$40
Axles ~$350 (custom-fit)
T/A Cover ~$140
Labor ~$150

You'll want to add new axle bearings and seals to your list.
For Axles, Moser (and others) make direct replacement axles for ~$250 a set which are a good investment over "unkown" 40 year old axles. (apparently DTS always custom-orders their axles after measuring the rear, which is why mine cost more). The T/A rear cover is also a good investment in axle strength (and it looks cool :) ). If you're on a tight budget, you could always re-use the existing axles and cover and upgrade easily at a later date (or not). Also, there have been comments from several folks over the Richmond gear sets not wanting to set up right and being noisy -- you may want to consider a different vendor (although maybe that was just a bad batch of gears for a short while)

When I was looking for a shop to build up my rear, I called/emailed a few shops telling them what I was looking for and asking for a quote along with part info (vendor, part numbers, etc.) so you know you're comparing apples to apples for parts. And I'd definitely talk to whatever shop you're going to line up before buying parts -- I figure I'd rather have the same shop buy the parts and install them rather than me show up with a bunch of parts and asking a shop to do the install. If "everything" comes from the same place, you've got a better chance at easily resolving any noise/etc. issues you have later rather than arguing about bad parts vs. bad install some time down the road.

Okay, found a shop that can do it.

Buddies father runs a transmission shop here locally, said it's not hard to do.
He's done more then a few of them. $250-$300 in labor he said if I order it all.
The catch is, like you said. Warrantying the rear end. If I order all the parts, he can't guarantee they will all
work well together. If he orders the parts and does the whole legwork bit, and marks them up for the risk, then
he can warranty it since he's making a profit off the risk. Makes total sense.

So I think I'm going to get the rear end and begin.
I just needed a list of parts and where to go.

Gotta call Freddie for parts now.
Just ONE question.....what is a T/A cover ??

A housing can run from $200 to $500. The Eaton Posi is $420, a set of gears is $175, the installation kit is $92, a set of axles is $180, axle bearings and seals are $30, studs are $25 and labor can run from $200 to $500 or more. Sandblasting can run around $50. If you didn't get a yoke or cover with your housing then that will be another $150 maybe.

The T/A Parformance cover is a heavy duty cast aluminum cover that is designed to brace the bearing caps and the housing. It usually runs around $175.

The T/A cover is a pretty heavy-duty cast aluminum job that strengthens the rear by helping to structurally bridge that big hole at the back of the carrier AND it acts as a differential bearing girdle using some preload screws on the diff bearing caps. In my case, it's complete overkill, but I figured I'm already spending a crapload of $ on the rear, so why not overdo it for a little bit more?

Thanks for the link!!!!

This won't see over 400 - 500hp./ft lbs tops.
Is the Ebay one good enough, or is the T/A one recommended for my purpose??
3.73 ....hell maybe I'll get a 4 series so I can get a 3.90 and go up.

Street cruising, nothing crazy at the tracks.

What do you guys think of this Eaton posi, 3.73 yukon gears package price??

I read some Richmond gears are a bit noisy, and then I read on Yukon's
build quality being pretty good, but I'm admittedly a newb on this area.

He is not making much, I could slightly beat those prices. The T/A cover is a good one.
Both the Richmonds and Yukons are good gears. The Richmonds are USA made.

im not trying to pull any money from any pockets or put any in, but I just bought a complete rear end rebuild setup off ebay for 699.77 with free shipping. It's a eaton posi, a 3.73 set of gears (he gave me the choice of a 3.42 to a 4.56) and a full set of timkin bearkings & seals. Pretty good deal in my eyes, so that's what I bought. http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=380195704709

Ace, That kit is not one of the good ones. The shims are lower quality as well as some of the other parts. Matt, I could have done that deal.

Freddie, how are Motive gears VS Yukon, Richmond, etc??

Obviously I don't need the best of the best for drag racing durability, but I also don't want junk either.
Something reliable and strong metallurgy I don't have to sweat. Is Timken the kit I should be looking into??
The Eaton Posi is a lock at this point, just need a recommended rebuild kit, and gears.

Better yet, you or tlowe can put together a COMPLETE rebuild kit and show me prices I'll get it from either of ya.
I'm looking to go pickup this rear end this week and drop it off. So once I get a confirmed list of parts, it's game on.
Hopefully I'm NOT coming off as a PITA, because I'm just trying to shop for the best parts combined for the best prices.

I appreciate everyone's input and expertise. :)

I'm by no means an expert, but I'd think the T/A cover is overkill for you with a 12-bolt (although maybe I'd consider it if you were running a 10-bolt). So you can get whatever cover you'd like based on looks and/or price.

Most kits have Timken bearings, but the shims are where the difference is. Ratech mixes bearings and other parts in their kits, so you might have some Koyo bearings and Timken bearings in the same box. Also the pinion nut is odd in these kits. The Yukon, DTS and Tom's Differentials kits have the super shims and better parts in them. The Yukon kits have 2 crush spacers in them in case you mess up the first time.

Yukon, Motive and Richmond all make good gears, but they also have had a few bad batches here and there. I heard that Motive moved production to Korea for a while and had a lot of problems with those gears. They are suppose to be back in Italy now, but I can't back up this story.

My take is to do it right the first time with proven parts. I supply the same pieces used by myself as does Freddie.
I also like the T/A covers, they can be bought almost anywhere for 140-150. I have them instock also.

Ace - talk to tlowe. Have him do it for you. He did my 67 12 bolt 3:73 posi 2 years ago. Perfect since then and a very happy customer.
