: Would anyone like to help decode my buildsheet
Birddog1970 Jan 8th, 10, 10:53 PM Here is my partial build sheet. Curious to learn as much as I can with the various codes (understand some wont be discussed). Its only a partial and hard to get a good picture so these are the blocks I can see. Baltimore Built car btw

Here is some things I have learned:
1970 Chevelle L34 402/350HP engine,M-20 or-21 Transmission,No Air Conditioning,Std.4-bladed Fan,Std.SS Bulge hood with Open element Air Cleaner,no gauges,Std.SeatBelts & Spring Clip-on SS wheel Center caps. DP Tune Up Label on a ZL3 conversion is an L34 engine.
BH Carb is a Quadrajet.Thats a Hydraulic lifter engine.
I Fan Clutch & DU pulley are Hydraulic lifter engine. So Not an L78 or LS6.
These 3 items are common to an L34.. & an LS5 too but the DL driveshaft and ZL3 Conv. are exclusive to an L34.
Steering column code & driveshaft code are exclusive to an M-20 or M-21 Only.
Any other cool info you can decipher? Any way to tell if it was for sure a M-20 or M-21 (assuming M-20)?
Birddog1970 Jan 27th, 10, 4:51 PM Anyone bored and want to look at the codes to extrapolate more info about my car?
Thanks :)
Dave
Dave Birdwell Jan 27th, 10, 8:01 PM 55-SS = open element air cleaner, so no functional cowl hood
21-I Z = standard 4 blade fan, no clutch.
57-C-6 L= windshield antenna
58- L9260, the L goes with the antenna, 926 is a heater hose.
69-KA = standard SS steering wheel
70-CX = Steering column, Floor shift
71-BLACK = steering column color
73-CS = speedo cable, 4 speed
92 1R= Speedo gear, 21 tooth red
102-CE = Quadrajet throttle cable
Not much more to tell from this area of the sheet.
Birddog1970 Jan 28th, 10, 10:13 AM Thanks for the information .. was hoping something would tell if M-20 or M-21, but I'll go with my assumption of a base-model SS with the M-20.
Thanks again.
Dave
Rich-L79 Jan 28th, 10, 10:21 AM Well, the transmission itself, if it is the original, should have a date code and partial VIN stamped into it. If the partial VIN is there and matches the car then you are golden. From there it's just left to determine if it is an M20 or M21 by what's in the case.
Also, it's fairly unlikely (almost entirely unlikely?) that they would have paired an M21 up with 3.31 gears.
DaleM Jan 28th, 10, 12:22 PM I don't know...3.31 was the standard gear set regardless of transmission be it M20/M21/M22/TH400. I probably have as many L34 sheets with M20 as I do M21 and/or TH400.

Do those with M21s or M22s also have anything higher than 3.73 gears as well?
Birddog1970 Jan 28th, 10, 12:47 PM Unfortuantely not the original trans (has a 69 M-20 in it now). I assume M-20 but was interested to know what it came with and any insight to verify for sure with the partial build I have.
One other comment, on my driveshaft stripes its Orange Tan Orange if that helps narrow down the results (being discussed in Restro Corner forum)

I know many of the TH400 and M22s have 4.10 gears - mainly LS5 & LS6 of course. Let me run up a quick (?) spreadsheet of build sheets I have showing plant, engine, trans, and rear end ratios and see what comes up. :)
DaleM Jan 28th, 10, 1:45 PM After looking a several sheets, decided not to list them all but 3.31 and 4.10 appears to be about the only two gear sets listed on L34, LS5 & LS6 engines with M20/M21/M22/M40 transmissions.
I looked at 5 L78 sheets and 4 of the 5 show 3.55 gears (3 M21, 1 M40) while another L78/M21 sheets doesn't list the gear ratio for some reason although it appears to be a good Baltimore sheet.
Not sure what other gear sets were available in 1970 with those 4 engines.

I noticed "no gear ratio" on a well known S/P L78 as well. I have often wanted to ask you about that Dale.

Don't know anything about the car in particular but I have the sheet and it seems legit.
1972convss454 Jan 28th, 10, 2:59 PM I PMed you back. Let me take a look at it and I will see if it is the same one I have. The one I have is also a L78 and does not show the ratio although it does list the posi option.
Dave Birdwell Jan 28th, 10, 8:31 PM I've seen a couple sheets that didn't list the axle ratio, but you can tell by the code up in the boxes. I think the ones I've seen were L78's with 4.10s, and the only moniker is the KK code in the line of codes....

D'oh, never even thought to look there. The one L78 sheet I have with no axle code is coded KK for a 4.10 Positraction.
bcmiller Jan 28th, 10, 9:19 PM 92 1R= Speedo gear, 21 tooth red
OK, this might be a stupid question. Since this car was originally a 3.31 ratio rear car, can we use the red 21 tooth speedo gear information together with the 3.31 ratio to determine if it was a close ratio or wide ratio transmission?
Redmanf1 Jan 29th, 10, 3:22 AM I don’t think so because they are all 1 to 1 in the final drive.
