I think it is a fake, 10 bolt and a H vin but I could be wrong. It still is a nice looking car. W is the 402 right?, oh well just wondering.
mmurphy77 Jan 6th, 10, 11:35 PM Could be real as 350 c.i. SS cars did come with the 10-bolt w/ the sway bar and TH350 trans.
72ragtop Jan 7th, 10, 1:39 AM Man, I swear, I don't think anything bugs me worse than the wrong shape stripes.

A U in a VIN would denote a 402, W would be 454. They should have upgraded to a 454 instead of a 402, they cost the same to build and more people seemto like SS454 better than 396-402.
Astro Vent Jan 7th, 10, 8:47 AM What proof do they have it's an original true SS? I didn't read anywhere about a buildsheet? and the dash looks aftermarket...
Maybe I'm missing something.
But that's still a nice car...Maybe 25k.

Is that true?
Astro Vent Jan 7th, 10, 9:18 AM Is that true?
yes.
JChilders Jan 7th, 10, 9:23 AM The dash is a real. They don't make repops with the seat belt light.

now how did i miss that? :clonk:
Forgot mine didn't b/c it was an early build.

True but doesn't mean it's a SS car :) It helps but with the 10 bolt I would tend to believe it's more likely Malibu.
What really matters is the quality of the car. I'll take a good solid Malibu/Clone over a rusted out SS anyday. :)
I forget, wasn't there two HP options for the 350. One would have been an option for the SS package and the other lower HP was not.

The SS could be ordered with BOTH versions of the 350 (2 bbl and 4 bbl). Bottom line, as always, is without documentation (or a 'W' in the vin) there's no way to absolutely known if it's real.
dmuller Jan 7th, 10, 11:26 AM Not to derail this, but can someone tell me what the wheels on this car are called, and are they available for a reasonable price anywhere? I'd like to find some sort of good-looking steel wheels that I can use on the front of my car that will work with standard lug nuts. Anything I have other than plain vanilla steelies won't pass NHRA tech due to the wheel studs being too short.

They are the SS wheels for the Chevelle for I think 71 & 72. I also believe they were available on the Camaro's through most of the 70's. Pontiac also had a similar wheels for the GTO's and Firebirds. I found it tough to find 4 good wheels that are 15inch (I looked for a while last year). There are more 14 in wheels, but won't fit over most disc brake conversions.
dmuller Jan 7th, 10, 11:47 AM Thanks for the info. I have seen repros of some wheels that are somewhat similar, I think they came on earlier SSes. I think those are also mostly just in 14s. I guess I'll have to keep looking for used wheels. I have one of those front disk conversions, so I need 15s.

I would double check that 15's will fit (unless that is what you have on now :D). Mine were really close and I used late 70's calipers. I think with any C5 conversions you have to go 16's, maybe 17's.

I do have 15s on now, and they seem to fit, though I haven't driven it yet--that's about 18 months away! It's the kit Ground Up sells that's advertised to work with 15s. Even some 14s, apparently. I think that part will be okay. (Is there a smiley for crossed fingers?)
depley Jan 7th, 10, 1:11 PM Year one now has the 71-72 SS style wheel in 17 inch. They look pretty good too. No trim ring, which is a good thing!

I think we have officially hijacked this thread.
I really like these style wheels though. I couldn't find 4 good ones when I was looking for wheels, so I went with the mid 70's Nova wheels with the stainless inserts, trim rings and faux knockoffs. I think they turned out pretty good.
ducatibrandon Jan 7th, 10, 6:22 PM Thats OK I'm use to it. I like those Year one wheels too.
I thought SS cars always had a 12 bolt and boxed rear arms like mine. I also have the stock rear sway bar. My car has a " J " vin which is 350 4bbl carb. From what I can tell I think mine is real so it has me wondering about other cars you know and mine. I'm judging mine being real on a lot of different things that other "real" cars have and when I see stuff like this I'm like WTF. Not a big deal but hey it has nice wheels anyway.:D
