Gizmo, if you want the car to sit up nice in the rear, cargo coils may or may not make you happy. The best bet is to order a pair of custom springs. I just ordered and recieved a pair of 2" over stock height from- Coil Spring Specialties in St. Mary's KS 785-437-2025 or www.coilsprings.com. (http://www.coilsprings.com.) I recieved my springs in 1 week and are custom made for your car at the height that you want. I shopped ALL of the custom guys and found them from a co-worker. I paid $120.00 for them and about $15.00 in shipping. Talk to Bridget if you call, she takes your info and is real nice.

The period after .com is screwing it up.

Hey,

Following up from the information above: when ordering from www.coilsprings.com (http://www.coilsprings.com) one of the info box request asks for "% change in rate" For those who have used these springs, what rate did you order? Are you happy with these springs?

Thanks!

Leave % of change blank and type the desired rate into the special instructions box. I run 175lbs, stock I think is about 110lbs or so. I haven't used them yet but will be for my next springs, I did receive a quote though and entered the info like stated-they responded within 24 hours.

OH, yeah be prepared to replace the pinion seal if you do not use adjustable upper arms.

The increased angle of the rear will cause it wear out. Ask me how I know?

When I ordered my springs, I just called and talked to Bridget and told her the height over stock that I wanted and placed the order that way. I am very pleased with them too, they hold the car up real nice in the rear. I just bought the car in May and the guy that I bought it from loved the air shock deal and the height with the new springs is the same as it was with the air shocks sset @ 90 psi. Then I added Monroe Gas Matic shocks in place of the air shocks. It has a great ride now, not like a boxcar.

I've owned my '64 Malibu for 18 years and have changed the springs 3 times. I have ordered stock springs each time from different suppliers, and the car sat like a 4x4. The suspenion was topped out and I cut down the springs, about 1 coil off the rear & 3/4 coil off front. The car still sits about 1" above stock, because you can not safely cut the rear coils short enough to get stock height. Due to the fact that the new replacement springs use a heavier coil with a shorter travel. The new replacement springs will come with the correct un-installed height, but with the heavier rating and less travel the body will sit too high and the spring will not squish (travel) down to the stock height. The rear springs are held in by spring tention (un-installed height). If too much is cut off the rear springs they will fall out when the rear of the car is raised, as when jamming on the brakes, flying over the crest on a hill or jacking up your car on the frame. If your car sits too high you will have issues as D.G. said with pinion angles, seals, u-joints, high speed vibrations. I used rear springs for a 1964 Malibu 327 and fronts for a 1966 396 w/air Malibu as I have a big block. Dave

i replaced the rear coils in my 65 for a little more rear end lift, but the new coils sat the same as the ones i took out. so i machined up some hard plastic spacers to go under my springs [between bottom of spring and rear end spring pad]. i made them about 3/4" and it raised the rear about 1 1/4". cost about $8.
