: What color for '66?? 3 choices
66ken Jan 5th, 10, 11:04 PM I'm very close to finally having to pick a paint color for my 66.... doh! I have it narrowed down to 3 choices.
1) GM olive drab - flattened - painted trim - black ralleys with dog dish caps
2) Cortez Silver - chrome trim - black torque thrust
3) Marina or the Toyota speedway blue - chrome trim - chrome or brushed torque thrusts
I've asked the people I work with but most of them are Mopar guys... so what do you think?

I voted 2. 1 may look a bit cool but IMHO it will look strange or dated in a few years anyway and you will regret it. Everyone seems to have marina...
cobaltchev67 Jan 5th, 10, 11:35 PM I agree with Brett, lots of Marina Blue cars out there(mine WAS one of them)....not a fan of Olive Drab. Cortez Silver looks nice.
madman960 Jan 6th, 10, 5:48 AM I also voted for Cortez Silver.

Canucit@msn.com Jan 6th, 10, 8:41 AM My 67 was blue from the factory and I painted it capri cream I think I should of painted it blue
It might go back to that color this year
RAIDER SS Jan 6th, 10, 12:47 PM Marina blue still looks awesome. Don't like olive, and there are SO many silver cars of ANY manufacturer.
RAMBO Jan 6th, 10, 12:53 PM I can't think of what its called, but its a 1971 GM silver color- its kind of a silver blue- saw it on a 66 last summer at a show- looked much cooler that the standard cortez silver.
Just a thought.
FiredUp396 Jan 6th, 10, 1:27 PM I have a 69 that is Cortez Silver and yes it is a nice color but I have had it for just about a year and I think it looks plain it needs a vinyl roof more color not sure if you call black a color or not. I think it needs some black in it so I voted the blue
1966_L78 Jan 6th, 10, 1:52 PM I like the Marina Blue, but I am a little biased...
True, there are alot of blue cars out there, but IMO, more silver cars the last few years, the new trend seems to be silver (catching up to blue)...
Olive Drab, flattened with painted trim... Sounds cool, but may look outdated easily... How about '69 Pontiac Verdoro Green, flattened?
For Christmas, my kids bought me a toy car (1/64th scale). Its a '69 GTO, flattened Green with blacked out trim and black wheels... I like the look...

dmuller Jan 6th, 10, 3:11 PM I had to vote Marina Blue, as that's what I'll be painting my car. Yeah, there are a lot of them, but not near where I am, and I've never had a Marina Blue car!
But the silver should look very good too.
R66SS427 Jan 6th, 10, 5:20 PM I love the Marina blue. It fits the car. If I ever change color, thats my choice.Black is to much work to keep clean.
bluefishgary Jan 6th, 10, 5:38 PM What was the born withl color??? I like Marina blue.

check it out. Dan Car's 71 Sprint SP is that color.
66ken Jan 6th, 10, 7:49 PM What was the born withl color??? I like Marina blue.
original color was Marina blue

I like this green too!
Brettd85 Jan 6th, 10, 11:22 PM Well if your original color code is marina blue, I may have to change my choice. Its a good color and desirable to most people. But if your just building it for you, then I still say silver!
Monkey Jan 7th, 10, 4:01 AM i voted silver. i am one of the marina blue owners.
personally i cant go past a satin black with nascar rims and some dunlop yellow or white writing semi slicks.
one day if i need to paint my that will be it.
tyre package something like this

PickSS Jan 7th, 10, 4:35 AM I vote for the Silver. If you want a Green alternative Tropic Turquois is a 66 chevelle color that's not seen very much. See pics in signature.
SebJr Jan 7th, 10, 7:57 AM original color was Marina blue
then it's a no brainer... ;)
Bob's66396 Jan 7th, 10, 8:05 AM Marina Blue, the correct Marina Blue, has got to be the best color for any '66-'67 Chevelle Super Sport. Of coarse,I am partial to that color, just check my link...Bob
JAYARTER Jan 7th, 10, 10:38 PM My son-in-law painted his 63 Chevyll convertible Toyota Blue.
with chrome wheels that car just stands out in a croud. My 66 SS
Chevyll was orginal Marina Blue...always like that color. May repaint it that again http://photobucket.com/photobucketcomJayBj
So many choices/1 Car Good Luck Jay
66dream Jan 8th, 10, 9:49 PM I voted Marina Blue. I'm partical too but I also jsut love the color

Super nice - I'm seeing that the majority are pulling for the Blue!
2008fx4 Jan 9th, 10, 10:23 PM silver- but im biased

66ken Jan 9th, 10, 11:41 PM I think it is down to silver and blue... you guys are right about the "getting old" of the drab green I think... I may have to involve the wife in this decision now...DANG!
bowkevin Jan 12th, 10, 1:15 PM I think I know why there are so many Marina Blue 66's out there. Because they look good!!! I had a black 66 and yes they're hard to keep clean. Marina Blue will give you a color that shines and also isnt very hard to keep clean. Just my opinion though. How smart am I? Im doing another black car!:clonk:
Den's396 Jan 12th, 10, 4:56 PM What about BLACK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
66Broke Jan 14th, 10, 12:12 PM Everywhere I take my Marina Blue 66 Chevelle I get compliments. it really fits the car. its period-correct, attractive, and is beautiful!

SebJr Jan 14th, 10, 12:33 PM I think if you don't go with the original Marina Blue, and you decide on silver, why not go with Chateau Slate....at least it's correct for the car and is vey sharp!!
cuisinartvette Jan 15th, 10, 2:21 PM Cortez silver with black looks tasteful yet striking in the sun. Marina blue is beautiful but go to any cruisenight and every other chevelle, camino, camaro and nova is painted with it. :boring:
TXCR13 Jan 15th, 10, 10:55 PM Blue, black, and red. All look fantastic, but doesn't anyone want to stand out from the herd???
Can't wait to paint my '66 in Artesian Turquoise, the original color, and one not seen nearly enough, IMO.
DreamCar69 Jan 17th, 10, 10:28 PM were maderia maroon, butternut yellow or a deep red available in 1966. I bought a brand new 1967 Chevelle in 1967 that was maroon and it was stunning.
I agree with what the guys have said we are over run with blue cars.
Steve
Curts67SS Jan 18th, 10, 8:54 AM Marina blue was a factory color for 66 and 67. My 67 is marina blue. We get alot of great compliments on the color. Good luck!
Curts67SS Jan 18th, 10, 3:17 PM I vote for Marina Blue with a clear coat.
Good Luck
TerryAT Mar 2nd, 10, 5:15 PM Blue, black, and red. All look fantastic, but doesn't anyone want to stand out from the herd???

My '66 Nova was Artesian Turquoise. Everywhere I went people would compliment that color!

Bob Flynn Mar 2nd, 10, 5:48 PM cortez silver with a black vinyl top--------SS cragars
Freddy Mercado Mar 2nd, 10, 6:02 PM I voted for Cortez!!!! Very sharp, no matter what car!!!!!
704EVER Mar 2nd, 10, 7:53 PM Marina Blue is the no brainer here, paint it a color where you may actually be able to sell the car someday if you have to. The offbeat colors, while nice, become burdens down the road. Trust me, I've been there!!!;)
Beaux Mar 10th, 10, 3:23 PM I do not like green very much at all BUT that green that Tony posted is sharp. I really dig that scheme. Tough, patina without patina "looking"....it has a streetfighter look to it. Definitely not common.
Silver is just everywhere - EVERYWHERE.
walk outside right now and look up / down whatever road you are near. You will see an ocean of silver. Its the new Cranberry Red, I tell ya. I've repeated that many times and I believe myself more and more with each drive to work.
StorminNorm Apr 30th, 10, 9:38 AM Blue, black, and red. All look fantastic, but doesn't anyone want to stand out from the herd???

I bought mine this way with a brighter blue. It does stand out.
93Polo Apr 30th, 10, 10:01 AM Not a fan of the Olive Drab and I have owned plenty of green car.
Silver looks great but it has been done a few times recently. You can't go wrong with a nice silver.
Marina is another color that you can't go wrong with. I would go with a brushed center on the wheel if you do a 17" or bigger 3 piece wheel. Grey center trq thrusts would also be nice in a 15. I would also do some of the grey touches that 2008fx4 did on his car. Blue can look good contrasted with black or grey but everyone goes chrome. Keeping the chrome only in the factory trim would make for a more unique look on a '66.
You may also consider BMW Estoril and Avus Blues both are timeless colors. The trend of copper/orangish colors IMO will look dated in a decade or so but some of the cars look very good now.
I always liked 66's in Black but my uncle had one.
PS Don't ask Mopar guys about color options, your car will come out pink or looking like Purple Cool Aid. ;)

Agreed, I"m sticking with my forest green on my '70. If I see another Cranberry Red '70....
If you want to be unique and timeless IMO look at the color options for cars built during that time period.
The standard colors can stand out some if you mix up the accents and wheels.

I think I've decided on Marina blue- my wife (read financial advisor!!) likes the stock look so I'll compromise with the color - Thanks for all the input guys! I'm on my final few coats of primer then to sealer - Just about got her smooth!! I put in a couple of replacement panels since I started this post... just wasn't happy with the repair - too much rust!! So that has set me back a little, but better to do it now then after paint!
I like the gray or black idea on on the rims as well...
I actually work with a few mopar guys and I will NEVER ask their color opinions!! ha ha
Again, thanks for all of the feedback!

lol. Good luck on the build and post up some pictures. Keeping the wife happy does make things easier.
I'm not a fan of Estoril on a M3 but on a '66 Chevelle the more I think about it, the more I'm liking it in place of the Marina. Estoril is more like the tone of a '66 Vette Nassau Blue but with the pop of the '67 Vette Marina IMO. It is just enough change from the GM colors to stand out in the crowd. A Google image search for "estoril blue m3" will give you (and the wife) an idea. BTW I grew up with my parents having a '67 Vette (that is still needing restoration) in Lynndale blue thus the references to the colors.
I have some Mopar friends too and yes we give each other crap. It is all part of the fun IMO.
WeCruzin69 Jan 31st, 11, 11:53 PM 1 vote for the silver... I painted my 69 what is called "Sparkle Silver Metallic". I really love the color... when the sun hits it - it really pops... I plan to put the red SS stripe down the side to give it a tasteful hint of color... You don't see too many silver 66's out there... always blue, red, and black... olive drab in a flat finish just makes me think of a tank or something low speed and not so cool... too blah... but then I'm in the Marines and see olive drab all the time, and that's my opinion.:D

frankiblu Feb 1st, 11, 7:53 AM my thought is if it was originally marina blue than keep it marina blue. i am going through the same thoughts with my 66. it was factory marina blue but right now has all new panels that are black and is primed black so a color change is possible. i keep thinking about change but original is marina blue
