I think this person has a M20 that he thinks is a M21. But I maybe wrong. Can anyone break this down? How does that vin# look?

The A is M20 ,not M21 but could be any Muncie gear's inside.
How many grooves on the input shaft?

According to main case, it's a Muncie M20. Date 1969, August 10, (A) M20 Correct for Chevelle and El Camino (Kansas built). If gears are original, input shaft should have 2 grooves/rings.

I need some more opinions on that partial vin. There is something not right with it to me.

The description of the transmission photo has two errors. It is a M20, not an M21, though the description of wide ratio and 2.52 low is correct. And the build date (H) is June, not August.

The partial VIN indicates Chevrolet, 1969 model year, Kansas assembly, and sequence of 470944 which would be during the month of July at Kansas City assembly. Dates look good with a transmission build date of June and a vehicle final assembly during July.

As others have said, the gears could have been changed, so need to verify. Two rings on input would indicate M20, no rings could indicate a replacement of any ratio.

I think what he's getting at is the VIN stamp on the case, and I don't know enough about 69's to know if they used the same font as the 70 Kansas cars.....

Yes, thats what I was wondering. The car was built in Kansas.

I have a 69 M20 dated March 17 that was assembled into a car at Kansas, but the partial VIN is in a different location. The fonts look similar, though.

Thanks, thats what I was looking for. Now if you open these up in separate window photo galleries and flip this pic over and compare the 2. One stamp looks to be pertruding out while the other looks stamped in. The fonts do look the same but appear to be thicker on the one pertruding out. Opinions?

Opinions?

Fonts look the same to me, two different areas stamped, two different guys swinging the hammer on the gang stamp.....
