Hi, I was just wondering because I totally forgot what my teacher said in school about this adjustment on top of the p/s. If I can remember is it lowers or raises that gear w/ the 3 teeth on it, under the cap. Can someone tell me? Also How would you do the adjustment? thanks, Eric

The adjuster screw in the middle of the side cover does indeed move the pitman shaft into more or less engagement with the rack inside the gear housing. The mesh of the pitman shaft gear and the rack were designed with a slight interference right on center so that your steering feels precise and crisp. This same gearset was designed with slight clearance either side of center.
This pitman shaft adjustment must always be performed with the gear exactly right on center. You can download the following page which shows the adjuster procedure.

Reading the referenced link. Section 13/B I would say Up until locked then down until it turn free. I think the tires should be off the ground?
