View Full Version : Front brake flex lines
snydes Feb 22nd, 01, 5:30 PM I am putting disk brakes off a '69 chevelle on my '67, so I would think that I need flex lines for a '69 rather than a '67 since the '67 used the dual piston caliper, and I am using single piston calipers. Is this correct?
phocksphyre Feb 22nd, 01, 6:39 PM Snydes,
You Are Correct! (ala Ed McMahon!)
Your flex line needs to fit the caliper you are using. I just put discs on my 67 Elky. You will need to either get the frame brackets off the donor car, or you can hog out the 67's so that the disc flex line fits. If you do it carefully and file a couple of notches in the hole, you can get the flex line to fit so it wont turn in the bracket. You will also need to drill out a flat washer to use between the hose and frame bracket as a spacer. (someone else on here came up with that and it works well!)

snydes Feb 22nd, 01, 7:15 PM Cool, I will get those frame brackets as well. Thanks!
SibbsSS Feb 23rd, 01, 12:25 PM A problem that I came across on my 66 is the 69 chevelle hoses are 12" long. They are too short & you can't turn lock to lock. Find hoses that are 14" long or swap your brackets from side to side. This will allow the 12" hoses to work but you will need to make new brake lines. Finding longer hoses will be easier. Like the previous post said, you will have to enlarge the bracket holes & use a washer as a spacer.

snydes Feb 23rd, 01, 6:02 PM How do you suggest I go about finding longer lines? Would the fact that mine is a '67 have any difference on this problem? Is this still an issue using the flex line frame brackets off the '69?
phocksphyre Feb 23rd, 01, 7:01 PM Thats interesting! I have 12 inch lines on my '67 with the modified stck brackets and they are OK. Whatever youi decide, snydes, BEFORE you take it off the jackstands, turn the wheels lock to lock to be sure! Also check that the hoses arent going to get into the coil spring. Not a good situation as you can imagine.

It's possible we have different calipers. Mine have the inlet located on the very bottom. I bought all my stuff new from Ground Up. When I discovered the hoses weren't long enough, I called them & they told me that on 66's, the brackets had to be relocated on the frame. I didn't want to drill 4 holes in my frame so as a test, I switched them from side to side. This relocated them closer to the calipers without drilling new holes.

I thought I read something about 72 grand prix having longer lines. Some place to start anyway.

That must be it. Mine connect about the middle of the caliper. They are (I think!) stock replacements for 71-72. Not sure tho as they were included with the setup I bought from a vendor of recycled parts.

Try a flex hose for a 69 camaro. IIRC that's what we have on the 65. You should be able to use the factory frame bracket and it will be long enough to go to the caliper without kinking/breaking/being too short. Call up GU or Right Stuff Detailing(whom GU gets their lines from) and they will be able to help you.

snydes Feb 28th, 01, 6:22 PM Well, I'm still at a loss here, I have a '67 with '69 calipers... do I need longer brake lines? I don't want to order the wrong thing and find out the hard way.
phocksphyre Feb 28th, 01, 7:52 PM Snydes,
Call the guys at Right Stuff. Tell them what you have, they will fix you up. They are great to deal with, very accomodating and knowledgeable. I spent some time talking to them about brake lines etc, and they were MOST helpful, and patient, even when I didnt know what I was talking about.
