I just installed a rebuilt power steering gearbox (# 5691676) on my '70 chevelle and the pitman arm (# 3979209) doesn't seem to slide on as far as it did on the old shaft. About 1/8 to 3/16 of an inch . I know the splines are lined up properly. Is this normal or do I have the wrong parts?

Thanks,

Jim

Are you using a Pitman arm from a power steering box or a manual box? The manual has a smaller spline and that may be the problem.

It's a tapered fit so, it'll only go on so far no matter. I had what I thought was this problem once, but when I compared the lenght of the output shaft of the steering boxes, the new one was longer so everything was fine. This may be your problem as well.

I'm sure I have the power type pitman arm. It slides on easy for about a half inch or so, then gets tight. I'm going to measure the shaft lengths like you said Bryan. Hearing someone else experience this problem makes me think it's ok.

Thanks,

Jim

Jim - if it makes you feel any better, I have the same problem. I replaced my power steering box with a new one and the arm just didn't seem to go on as far as it should. The tip of shaft just barely extends past the nut. I turned the old one in for a core before I could measure the shaft.
