I have 3 things to ask:

1) Did all 66 SS cars come with the dash gauges?

2) Did all speedometer lenses have the hole for the clock? (even when there was no clock such as gauges or clock delete car)

3) On an AC car, what was the finish for the bezel that goes around the outlet balls on each side of the dash? Chrome? Black? or ???

Thanks.

Planning a dash resto and want to get everything figured out now instead of when it's too late. :D

I have had my 66ss since 1981, It is a original 138 car but not all original # matching parts. I am no expert ,but here how mine is setup from the left side of dash, fuel gauge, at the top of gauge is a F bottom E. Next is the Battery gauge, top C+ bottom D-. Then the odometer, to the right of odometer Temp gauge, at the top is a H bottom C then the oil gauge at the top H bottom L . I dont see any holes in the dash lens. I think at one time a clock could have been in my consol. There has always been S&W oil pressure gauge there but on the bezel there is a U shaped hole where a thumb screw for clock might have been . The bezels look to be silver but are faded a little. If you need more info let me know

1- No, The gauge cluster is an option on all SS Chevelles.

2- No, The cluster lens for the gauge option does not have a clock stem hole. All others have the hole. The reproduction 66 67 lenses, that I have seen, have silver painted light outlines and line below the speedo, original lenses are chrome.

3- They should be the same color as the dash.

Thanks guys, that's a big help.

I did forget to ask about the holes for the idiot lights. I'm converting to gauges so what about the idiot light openings & the oil/temp, etc lenses. Does a gauge dash have these openings?

The idiot light cluster and the gauge cluster are not exactly the same. The factory gauge cluster will not accept the gas gauge or the clock from an idiot light cluster, and the idiot cluster will not accept FACTORY gauges, but there are repo gauges that will fit either one. You just need to get the correct set of repo gauges to fit your cluster. As far as the temp/oil/high beam/brake indicators in the idiot cluster goes, it is not correct for a gauge cluster but you can make it work. The idiot light cluster has split the idiot indictor areas into 2 separate lights, temp/oil/high beam/brake, whereas the gauge cluster has not divided those into 4 smaller separate indicators. They exist only as high beam and brake and each one is the full width of the rectangular box.

Thanks Steve. Looks like this just got a little more complicated.

I did order the correct repro gauges to fit the non gauge dash (shiftworks) so I'm covered there but getting the brake and high beam lights to look factory won't be as easy. It sounds like I would need the high beam & brake light lenses from a gauge type dash. Those don't sound too easy to find. :(

Anyone repro'ing them?

Can anyone post a close up pic of what these look like? I already looked in the photo albums but no close ups.

I just bought them my self and if I work up the nerve I am going to tear apart my nice restored dash cluster to put them in. where in PA are you. if you want to make your car close to correct you got to pay:beers:

I'm near Pottsville, Pa.

Guess I'll have to pay the $20 as well. Hope they don't want $12.95 to ship them. :(

Thanks for the help,

I put those lenses in today and made the bright and break lights work like a real factory gauge car. it looks better then they did before but its not 100% like factory

I'll be doing mine as soon as the 4 speed conversion is done. I hate to tear anymore of my car apart at the moment. lol

I just got my gauge conversion kit tonight so I'm almost ready. (still have to get the lenses we talked about)

I have another question though. What color is the face plate for the speedometer? The lined metal plate that sits just behind the speedometer lens.

I think someone may have painted mine black but I've seen some that looked gray.

Anyone know what is correct? If gray, suggestion on where to find the correct shade or a good description of it?

Thanks.

Bob
