hi there

i have a 72 el camino with 4 drum brakes
i hate that brakes!

i can buy a set from a 74 el camino who hase the 11 inch disc brakes
it is a complete set with spindels brackets calipers brakedisc.

wil it fit right on for my 72 camino?

the strange is of the story,on my brake pedal stand `DISC BRAKE`
should the owner before change the brakes from disc to drum or should he change the brake pedal?

ooh and can i reuse my own proportion valve from the drum brakes?
or must i change it to?

thanks dennis

You need to you all the disc stuff from the 74.

You will have to have 74 stock-size lower ball joints turned down on the base where they press into the 70 Chevelle lower arm.

The ball joint that goes into the cast spindle on the 68-72 chevelle is shorter and has a fatter taper than the 73+ ball joint.

The 74 spindle will bolt up, but the lower ball joint won't stick thru the 74 spindle enough to get the castle nut aligned witht he cotter pin.

I had the exact same setup.

The rubber brake hose mount on the frame is different too drum to disc.

it would be easier to adapt 84 and newer Corvette or 98 and newer Camaro front brakes to your existing spindle using the drum brake hub.

this will get you going on the C4 brake swap.. the page is about 67-69 Camaros, but they use the same spindle as a 64-72 Chevelle, so all the info applies.
when you get right down to it, all you really need to do is make (or buy) a bracket out of 1/4" steel to mount the calipers, turn down the outside diameter of the drum brake hub to fit in the Vette rotor (i did this on a bench grinder, but a machine shop with a mill can do it in about 2 minutes), and cut the upper boss down on the spindle even with the steering arm mounts.
i did the swap on my 71 Nova in a few hours.
on my Nova, i used a set of Russel braided brake lines for a first gen Camaro and a master cylinder for a 77 Chevelle with manual brakes and ditched the power brake booster. since i still had the stock rear drum brakes, i ran a Wilwood adjustable prop valve in the rear brake line after the distribution block. once i got the prop valve dialed in and the brake pads bedded in, the car just squatted down and stopped with no out of control rear wheel lockup or drama of any kind.
