I have a 1970 chevelle that has an R in the vin number. I assume that means it was built in Arlington Texas. Is that rare? Is it even real? Or is my car some kind of pieced together clone with fake ID. I can't find any reference material to confirm chevelle SS were built in Arlington in 1970. Help!

There were 69,839 cars reported to have been built at the Arlington, TX plant. No production was reported until December of 1969 through the rest of the model year. I would be suspect of the car if the build date was prior to 12A. Arlington built cars also have a production sequence that starts with 200001, so your car should have a VIN that follows a pattern like this: 136370R2XXXXX.

Is the VIN supposed to correspond to any production numbers on the cowl tag? Or did somebody have fun welding two cars together!!! I have no build sheet or protecto plate.
My VIN 136370R215734

My cowl tag
ST 70-13637 BT12803 BDY
TR 791 75 75 PNT

My cowl tag
ST 70-13637 BT12803 BDY
TR 791 75 75 PNT

"ST 70-13637" = 1970 malibu coupe, SS was just an option from 69 on, so they used the same VIN

75-75 Cranberry red, top & bottom (no vinyl roof)
The "BT12803" is a body sequence number and has no relation to the VIN
"TR 791" ivory bucket seat interior (but you knew that)

What exactly are you trying to figure out ?

Thats it! got it! Body sequence number has no relation to VIN. Thanks!

So, below and right of the Trim code is 3B393. What does that mean?

Maybe I am misreading BB393 , where "BB" is black vinyl top?

Maybe an assembly line code  someone will know, but if the paint code is 75 75 it means no vinyl roof, just red.
BTW it probably came with white stripes if it had a white interior "probably"
Post a pic. :D that link has long gone.

My 75/75 790(Ivory bench) SS454 came with black stripes. But looking at the LS6Registry my car is the only 75/75 790 coded LS6 in the registry.

3B393 is the production date. the zero is under the rivet. 03B would be the second week of March, 1970. Thats the week that Fisher body started building the body. It coincides with the R215xxx VIN of the car, so the tag is a match to the car. 393 is some number that Arlington stamped on the cowl tag at that location.

I am getting ready to start a restoration on a 70 built in Arlington. Luis and I were just discussing the R in the vin yesterday. Hope to find a build sheet.

The "R" just tells you it was built at the Arlington, TX plant.

And your reason for this statement?

Mine was built in Arlington in the 2nd week of February with CA emissions equipment. Why they would build and ship it to CA from there is anyones guess! :)

Any clues on where to go to find out what the 393 means?

My SS was a 396 from Arlington 75/75 791. It was restored with a 1989 Tonawanda MkIV LS6 replacement engine.

Your car sure has seen some moving around, Huh?
Built in Texas, shipped to CA, and now in Delaware. Kind of like the slogan Chevy used in `70 (I think) "On the move"

a little info. to ponder. why didn't arlington cars have con vins, and how come all the shift workers put the only build sheet under tar paper on drivers feet.

You do good to find any kind of a build sheet in an Arlington Tx car. Most are under the tar on the drivers side. I did find one on top of the fuel tank on a '72. I about fell out, Gave me hope to not rule out anything.
