Hi my name is doug and i have a 71 chevelle that has discs up front and drums in the rear. The front brakes seem to drag once in a while but then it doesnt. im pretty sure that it is the calipers are sticking but im not 100% sure. The funny thing is that my car dosent have a brake booster. Does that mean i have no power brakes? Could that be a reason why the brakes drag? please tell me what you guys think. thanks.

No booster, means manual brakes. Should have nothing to do with the brakes dragging. I Is it both fronts or just one side? It is highly unlikely, for both calipers too go bad at the same time (unless the car has been sitting for a long time). It could be an issue with the master cylinder, not pulling the fluid back. It may be a issue with the mast. cyl rod, too long, keeping a slight amount of pressure on the brakes at all times.

oh ok thanks. but both sides were dragging and heated up. i have only have the car for about a year in a half. so do you think i should replace the master cylinder before i replace the calipers? thanks for your time.

Doug,
Before you go through the trouble with the master cylinder, what is the condition of the rubber hoses feeding the brake fluid to the calipers? If they look "so-so" on the outside, there's a good chance that they're deteriorated on the inside. These hoses are double-walled, and the brake fluid softens the walls, causing them to "suck in" under the hydraulic pressure. This can act as a one-way valve; allowing the fluid to compress the calipers and stop the car, but not flow back into the master cylinder. They are inexpensive, easy to change, and will require a lot less bleeding than the full-system (front AND rear) that you would need to do if you change the MC. Let us know...

If possible, next time they're dragging, back off the master cyl mounting nuts and see if they release. Could be an issue with the push rod length or possibly need a return spring of some sort on the brake pedal.
