: Bad Heater Control Valve?

I added a an after-market air conditioning unit (Vintage Air) at the end of last summer.

The car gets hot inside even if the system is shut off. I suspected the vacuum controlled heater control valve (which keeps water from circulating) in one of the heater lines.

This is a plastic unit, which if vacuum is present, it closes the valve.

Anyway, sure enough, if I clamp off one of the lines, the air conditioning starts cooling fine.

Is it common for these things to go bad so soon? I was told that the plastic ones garbage. I was told to get a metal vacuum control valve, or put a wire controlled valve, or just put in a hose bib contraption! (only slightly exagerating)

Are the plastic ones POS, or did I just get a bad one from the get-go?

Don't know about the plastic ones, but the replacement metal one on my 70 works good.
