Fellas,

Any ideas on what bellhousing is correct for a 66 SS396? My Chevelle CD says either 3872444 or 3899621. Wondering if anyone knows if it should be one or the other (i.e., depending on when the car was assembled, what engine, etc) or if both are correct. Car was built in December 1965. Have not found a build sheet, but it hasn't been disassembled.

444 is what I would say is correct for that car.

Thanks, Mike. I have one of your CD's, I think, but not with me right now. Can you tell me why the 444 is correct over the 9621? I've located one of each for sale, but the 444 is twice as expensive as the 9621.

Should be 444 from what I know. The 621 bellhousing generally was not available until the 67 model year, but have heard of some late in the 66 model year. Your car is early enough to where it should be the 444.

Scott, I have a 3rd week July Atlanta built bronze/bronze chevelle. Original drive traine. Mine has the 621 bellhousing. Gary

I believe this is because the 444's were a popular casting used in the 'vettes: hence the upcharge!!!

My car is a Baltimore build, 12C, so sounds like the consensus is 444.

My 4th week of Dec car, flint plant, 444. Wasn't the bellhousing and trans installed at the towanda plant? If so, then plant wouldn't make any difference.

original 360 hp engine, trans, and rear, but these cars are from 1966 and alot can happen.isnt there a time date on the side?

There is a circle with a diameter cast into the housing. On one side of the diameter there are a series of dots that indicated 1st week, 2nd week, etc. And on the other side a number like 4 for the 4th month. Mine has 2 dots for 2nd week and 11 for the month of november.
