: What shocks should I get?

Ok, so I think I'm good on my suspension peices, now I need to figure what shocks to get. I would like something a bit performancey up front.

Now in the back, I have some 20yr old air shocks that are pretty cool to raise or lower the car with some air at a gas station. Are those considered low performance? I think the car bottoms out if I have 5 people in it. So I'm not sure what's up with that, but I'm pretty sure I don't want new air shocks if they're not high performance. I would like to get 4 of the same band and model.

I've heard Bilstein is pretty good and I'm thinking I'm leaning towards them. Any advice or thoughts? My budget is not super high either. Thanks....

Bilsteins are great and not super expensive. I like them. Run them on my truck and the chassis has them on now so will be on the chevelle as well.

Airshocks....:sad::noway:

Quick search will show you why but moot now since you are replacing.

Edel IAS, guess they now have the gray color available. I dont have experience with them personally. Have been in many a bilstein equipped car and always pleased.

Plenty of places can hook you up, sc&c included if I am not wrong. I like rcd right now - good tech, can revalve, will help with length on dropped or "adjusted" cars, good price, they come in black instead of standard yellow (I repainted my yellow bilsteins with eastwood phosphate but would of done black if they were available at the time)

Theres always Koni, QA1 and the other bigger names but that started to get too expensive and intricate for me (I have adjustable rear ride height, panhard, sway bar.....im getting too much damn adjustability for my little head to keep up with)

good luck. Look forward to checking out your car and your opinion with all this new stuff you are throwing at her.

Thanks Beaux, Bilstein's it is. Probably from S C and C when I get the rest of my stuff from Mark. I'll look into RD when I get a chance.

It is starting to get a bit complex and I think I need to rewind a bit to keep it simple. I was explaining what I'm doing to my girlfriend and she thought I sounded like an engineering PhD, ha.

I'll post my entire setup as soon as I finalize it in a couple of days. And definitely post all the pics I take when I complete the job in January or February.

Hey Beaux, I was looking up info to find out why air shocks are not the best for normal street use, but just found a bunch of bad sites with no real info. Can you or anyone else enlighten me on why exactly air shocks aren't a good idea, even though I will be replacing them, it'd be nice to know more about them. Thanks.....

If you search TC for airshocks you will see but jist of it is stress on the shock mounts, bad wheel hop and that they were never intended as a performance item but for load carrying adjustment in the rear.

For when you were hauling a refridgerator in your trunk I guess. Guys liked em to be able to put the ass in the air....but overlooked negative issues such as handling and wheel hop.

Airshocks on an SC&C equipped car would be like installing one of those tornado fans in a twin turbo LS2 intake to up your performance. Basically a "What the hell is that crap doing there?!?!?!"

My vote is dont buy a killer dinner and then drink the cheap wine. :D

What springs do you have? Spring rate is critical in shock selection.

Off the shelf shocks work OK with stock springs, but for stiffer "performance" springs, you'll need either adjustabil, revalved/tuned, or racing application shocks.

My vote is dont buy a killer dinner and then drink the cheap wine. :DThat's backwards from what I was taught... "Never ruin a $30 buzz with a $10 meal" ;)

I'll be damned if the opposing views dont sum up the difference in our locations. :D

And for the record I wish I lived where your view was established.

Check out my pics of Air Shock damage repair in this thread. They punched right through the trunk pan.

Looks like a big part of that coulda been the rust in the trunk pan, not the air shocks. I've used a set of Monroe air shocks for almost 10 yrs w/ no problems. Course I don't have any rust in the trunk pan either. I would say that they seem to tweak on the the shock mount a little hard tho. I also don't like jacking the tail way up quite as much as when I was a teenager. May be time for some good performance shocks.
