I think I have a 67 or 68 manual box it had the large center link stud pitman arm that I have swapped out with a 70 Pitman arm. I just noticed that my steering coupler has a flat and I have no flat on my steering shaft or a high point mark.

I did a seach under coupler and found some good info but wasn't sure if I can get the high quality 7 disk coupler without flat?

Anybody know what is the best coupler?

Thanks!

The Corvette 68 and early 69 flexible coupling with a 3/4 full round flange is GM part number 7806391 and is still available from GM dealers. It has a 7 ply neoprene disc. I am quite sure it is the flexible coupling you are looking for.

When you install this coupling on your gear, you need to do the following. Traverse your gear from lock to lock. Count the total number of revolutions. Come back from full lock exactly one half the total number of revolutions. This will place your gear right on center.

Now, install the flexible coupling on the input shaft so that the stop pins are at the 12 and 6 o'clock positions. The pinch bolt should be running through the 9 o'clock position such that the head of the bolt can be driven from over the fender.

Yeah I'm just looking for quality stock replacement. Sounds like the GM one is better then the local parts store variety. I didn't know there was non flexible and flexible?

Thanks for the part number!

Not sure if this answers your question or not, but it sounds like you have the wrong rag joint (coupler) for your steering box...some 800 boxes have 13/16-inch, 36-spline input shafts, while others use 3/4-inch, 30-spline shafts. The easiest way to determine the spline count on your steering box is by looking at the shaft. If the shaft is round with splines then it is a 30 spline. If it is splined with a flat spot then it is a 36 spline.

Lee Manufacturing has steering couplers in stock. They know the ins and outs of steering gears and componets. 818-768-0371
