Giving the fact that the 1970 chevelle ls6 is one of the highest horsepower musclecars built in that era. Why has the price of them dropped so low for an original one w/documentation. 2 yrs ago they were rolling off the auction block for $150-$225,000. I know the market and recession is partly to blame but do you all think the market might bounce back for these rare authentic time peices? Just would like to get some ideas from the guys on here that might know.

Thanks!!:beers:

The price has dropped for a couple of reasons I know of, probably are other reasons, anyway.

An original one with documentation, there out there but some of them probably aren't the real deal, not a sure bet buying one unless your really positive its right.

The bodies are getting looked over better with the digital cameras, like between the floor pans and floor supports.

I'm not saying any chevelle thats 40 years old has got rust in and around those spot welds, but there are some matching numbered ones that will need some major sheet metal work.

A few years ago those cars were sold without anybody , or some people paying any attention to it.

The cars are really looked over a whole lot better then they used to be.

I think a lot of the price will come back on them in time, body panels and primer and paint isn't getting any cheaper, the old deal time and material.

They get harder to find, and everything else thats connected to these cars is going up in price, they will also.

I have no doubt that they will bounce back in price. We went through the same cycle in the early 90's and the BOSS 429's were the prime example that time and they came back very strong indeed. Now is the time to buy before the cycle turns up again with real estate. I believe these cars have about 20 years before the crowd that adores them starts to die off. JMO but I've been here before.

Don't go buy auction prices, those aren't realistic. Most of the time you get a couple drunk millionaires playing bidding war with each other to see who's got the bigger d**k. You need to look at real world buying/selling or private transactions. That's where you will get real market value IMO.

Makes sense! So what if you have a restored SS/LS6 with docs/ if you could hold on to it would that be the best since it seems to be a buyers market?

Here's my opinion. The special cars of any era have held their value over the long run. The low production, high performance cars of the 30's have proven to be a better investment than almost any other legal way of making money. The woodies of the 40's are a gold mine. The big 50's convertibles with fuel injection or dual quads have gone through the roof in the last 10 years. The rare 60's muscle cars are still highly collectible as witnessed by the recent sale of the rare Pontiac Tempest race car. Yes, they all have their ups and downs but like any other commodity they will be good over the long run.

Of course the one thing they must have these days is bulletproof documentation. I have always compared investing in cars to investing in rare art. It's called Provenance in the art world and the word will be used more and more with collectible cars in the future.

The good cars have always shown a steady increase in value. Then the Japanese started buying cars and the prices catapulted. When they went through their economy problems the prices leveled out or fell very quickly. For the last several years the economy of the United States, and the rest of the world, drove the prices up quickly again. We are now seeing values level off and fall in many cases. However, we are also seeing more and more foreign buyers which will help hold the values through our economic problems. This can be evidenced by the thousands of collectible cars leaving the USA on a yearly basis. Very sad indeed!

I realize that's a long-winded answer to your question. Yes, the LS6 is a great investment for the long run. If you want to buy one today and plan on doubling your money in the next year, forget it. If you want to tuck one away in your garage for the next 10 years, you'll do OK on it. However, if you are like most American muscle car lovers you really don't need to worry about the future value of your car. Just buy what you can afford and drive the crap out of it.

i think the market has fallen right across the muscle car scene but it is always the High Horse cars that have the highest demand and the people that buy them have the money to get them.
it is a good time to buy though if you can find a real one,as the average is down a bit but that will soon change again in the long run !!!
Quality cars with Documents will always get more money anyways.
i also think there are more Tire Kickers than ever out there, they think they can buy a car that is worth $50,000 for $30,000. i dont think that will happen as these guys think just because there is a bad economy that car owners are desperate and will just give there car away.
you got to pay to play with the good quality cars and that wont change.
