Got my steering box apart ('65 chevelle)...how does the rag joint come apart...ther are two "standard" type botls that come off easily, but are the other two threaded in to the assembly or are they press fit?

Can't seem to find info?

I just rebuilt the rag joint on my '65. On the original rag joint, the larger and smaller "pins" that hold part of the rag joint together are rivited on. You need to grind off the back part of the rivit to separate the joint. The replacement pins in the rebuild kit are installed with a nut on the backside.

When you disassemble the rag joint, there should be a copper wire or thin plate item that joins the coupler on the steering gear to the steering column shaft. Its purpose it to ensure ground passes across the rag joint so the steering shaft is grounded to the steering box, then frame. Many horn problems stem from a bad connection here, as the horn is grounded to the steering shaft, which has to make a path all the way back to the battery negative post thru that rag joint.
