Hello members. I came across a new Hayes 10-130 flywheel at a yard sale cheap so I got it. I was going to use it on a 427 with a 11" clutch. The guy at the machine shop ( who wants this flywheel for his dyno hookup) said I would be better off with the stock flywheel as this one is heavier. Any thoughts on this or is he just trying to get the flywheel? Does the weight really matter if its balanced and true? I think it weighs 30 pounds or so and its a steel billet flywheel as compared to the stock GM cast 3789733 flywheel. Thanks for any input.

I think he wants to "steal" your flywheel....Keep it! A cast flywheel is not meant for High Performance.
What you dont want is a lightweight aluminum flywheel.

The 130 in the part no. represents 30#. I used one of those behind a high winding 427, dropping the clutch @ 6000 rpm, it warped from heat build in a very short time. I'm new to the clutch world so maybe it was the way I worked it or the clutch plate, a ceramic puc design with a centerforce pressure plate. Do lots of research on this, it gets pretty deep. I found that using a 40# SFI flywheel works better and doesn't heat up so bad. The car is a 55 chev weighing 2800 with a combined 2.78 first gear and 430 rear turning low 11's.

This is pretty much a car show cruiser car at 425 horse. I might get into it with a Ford or a Mopar once in awhile but thats about it. I agree that the machine shop guy wants to get this flywheel. I paid $25 for it brand new at the yard sale.

Keep it and get a new machine shop!!
You saved yourself atleast $200 over a new one.

Thanks guys for the advice. I thought that a scam was in the making when he offered me $50 for the $249 flywheel. Now I wonder about the machining he says needs to be done on the block when another shop said it checked out fine at the standard bore. Its really getting hard to trust anybody anymore.

Why?
I honestly don't know. Seems to me that a lighter flywheel would be an advantage though.
