The rear brake drums on my Chevelle are smaller than the front brake drums were. I went to get some new rears today and the guy at the parts counter told me that the fronts and backs carry the same #. He got some in from the warehouse and they were almost 3" deep where my old ones were only 2.5". I told him they must be fronts and he looked in another manufactures catalog and said that the drums were the same part # front and back. Yet I see that our sponsor has two different part #s for front and back. What gives?

That sounds wrong. I no longer have any front drums so I cannot check this for you. Try going on line and looking at the part numbers for the drums on the Autozone and Checker web sites. That will cost nothing.

Drums are listed by the "shoe" width not the drum depth which is a larger measurement.
Ask for:
Rear: 2"
Front: 2 1/2"

Thanks for the replies..
I got the correct size today. These drums are made by Wagner and are very nice compared to the chinese P.O.S.'s I looked at yesterday. I paid quite a bit more for these though :(
