I figure his Elky vs Mine is a good match-up. If he beats me, great. Would only serve to make me spend more on the car.

This is probably the weekend I'll be shooting for. It gives me a chance to do a couple shakedown runs in Victoria before coming down.
'cause I've got some unfinished business in the state of Washington to take care of. ;)
mattiepschevelle Dec 18th, 09, 7:53 PM i'm going to try for april 2nd for my first run ever!
gotago Dec 18th, 09, 9:04 PM 2.) I wana run against TC members only that first day. I am up for any kind of race, R/T, 60ft, 1/8th, 1/4.:D
How about a race to the bottom of a bottle of Rip Ass;)
kettbo Dec 19th, 09, 12:00 AM TOG, TOG, whereya at TOG?
1966malibu Dec 19th, 09, 12:16 AM Miss me George. I have been up to my eyeballs in packages. I think our economy is slowly coming back. My truck has been a little full lately , its all good only 4 working days left until Christmas :hurray:.
lesscubes Dec 19th, 09, 12:28 AM So, if I can get the car ready and somehow pass tech in this deathtrap, I'll run the opener, if I dont pass tech, I'll watch... And bitch and moan...
mattiepschevelle Dec 19th, 09, 12:52 AM I believe all I will need to run is an overflow catch can, and maybe a helmet?
cobaltchev67 Dec 19th, 09, 1:01 AM Now would be a good time to address any upcoming TECH updates, or requirements for anybody that's not been to the track and through inspection before. I've only been through once, but I like to make sure I'm within and beyond safe and required equipment.
Helmets would be a good starting point, so would battery hold downs....
mattiepschevelle Dec 19th, 09, 1:06 AM mycar has a factory holddown so I am pretty sure its legal, there are alot of people at the track with stock cars......
cobaltchev67 Dec 19th, 09, 1:14 AM Factory hold downs if they're at the bottom of the battery are not accepted. NHRA rules require top mount battery hold downs....this is something they definitely look at. I believe they require 3/8" diameter allthread or bolts...I need to change 1 of mine that's only 5/16".
505BBjason Dec 19th, 09, 1:36 AM Factory hold downs if they're at the bottom of the battery are not accepted. NHRA rules require top mount battery hold downs....this is something they definitely look at. I believe they require 3/8" diameter allthread or bolts...I need to change 1 of mine that's only 5/16".
Not to question the rules, or you, but the elky has made it through tech at 3 tracks with not so much as a sniff at the stock hold down:confused:
Dave Dec 19th, 09, 1:39 AM I've cleared Bremerton and PR 3 years running now. Inspector just wiggles the battery to see if it moves.
lesscubes Dec 19th, 09, 1:41 AM I've cleared Bremerton and PR 3 years running now. Inspector just wiggles the battery to see if it moves.
Crap.
LOL
66 Buick Special Dec 19th, 09, 1:43 AM Direct from the 2009 NHRA Rulebook:
Relocated batteries must be fastened to the frame or frame structure with a minimum of two 3/8" diameter bolts.
OEM located batteries without complete OEM hold-down hardware must be secured to OEM battery box/tray using the same 3/8" diameter bolt hold-down method described in the previous sentence.
(J-hooks prohibited or must have open end welded shut.) Metal battery holdown straps are mandatory. Strapping tape prohibited.
A maximum of two automobile batteries, or 150lbs combined maximum weight (unless otherwise specified in Class Requirements) is permited. Maximums may vary according to Class Requirements.
66 Buick Special Dec 19th, 09, 1:50 AM I got warned for having a heavy rubber cross piece that was in the hold-down kit I bought at a parts store. The battery was very secure.
So I looked around and all the parts store ones I found were rubber. I ended up going to the local RV parts place and buying a coated metal hold-down.
Next time through tech the younger guy at Bremerton checked the Buick and called me on the J-hooks. After a "you've got to be kidding" from me, he gets the older tech guy and he glances at it, shakes it and says its fine, but replace the J-hooks or weld them before next time.
So now I have 3/8" all thread, metal hold-down, and no problems getting through tech.
cobaltchev67 Dec 19th, 09, 1:57 AM Regardless of the personal expectations of the tech inspectors at the track, I'd still rather know personally my battery isn't going anywhere via a metal bracket with metal bolts. Overbuilt is just right for me. Last thing I need is a 60 lb. battery flopping around in my engine compartment.
cobaltchev67 Dec 19th, 09, 2:07 AM Back on topic, I see the BC Super Shifters has been added to the AUG 15th weekend.
mattiepschevelle Dec 19th, 09, 2:36 AM Dave has the same battery mount as me I'm sure I'll be ok, you can't tell me every car out on the track has all thread battery hold downs and trunk mounted batteries! I think they mostly look for questionable holddowns, plastic trays and garbage people try to get away with.
1966malibu Dec 19th, 09, 2:53 AM It is funny to see you folks arguing about the rules and what you have never been called on in tech .
Just get a copy of the rules and follow them . The biggest disappointment you can have at the track is not passing tech for some silly reason. GET IT RIGHT AND YOU WONT HAVE A ISSUE.
If you think your car can break the 13.99 window then have a - drive shaft loop, a helmet, proper wheel studs, a catch can, battery hold down, working neutral safety switch, proper seat belts and so on. Its for your protection .
'69Brian Dec 19th, 09, 2:59 AM One other thing to look out for, I failed tech for a crack in the windshield. The crack wasn't that big but they still said no.
cobaltchev67 Dec 19th, 09, 3:00 AM Great points Greg, sort of what I was trying to say but you said it better. I'm not trying to argue, just trying to inform.....
A note about the neutral safety switch on manual trans cars, they didn't come that way in a Chevelle until '69. So, if a tech guy argues that with you about your '68 or older car, just explain that to him.
BTW, when I was at Bremerton last year, there were no more NHRA rule books available, and to boot the NHRA website wouldn't take internet orders. I gave up after that.
mattiepschevelle Dec 19th, 09, 3:09 AM I never said anything about rules just think its kind of wierd that so many people have stock cars and they pass through tech all day long!!?!?!
1966malibu Dec 19th, 09, 3:24 AM Matt it's real simple, I you have a nice stock looking car and it runs 15's all day they are not going to look at it real hard.
But if you have a welfare nova with lots of NOS they will give you a little harder look :D.
66 Buick Special Dec 19th, 09, 3:36 AM Just get a copy of the rules and follow them
Did just that after the 2nd hold-down issue. That's how I was able to quote the rule.
mattiepschevelle Dec 19th, 09, 3:37 AM Ya I guess its all upto the tech guy. I can see it you pull up and your whole engine compartment is covered in zipties, bailing wire and all that he would most likely give you a hard time! But most of us don't really have cars like that!
66 Buick Special Dec 19th, 09, 3:38 AM But if you have a welfare nova with lots of NOS they will give you a little harder look
Or a Welfare Buick with a little tiny bit of NOS.
Shiny paint gets you through the gate.
cobaltchev67 Dec 19th, 09, 3:45 AM Even a shiny car with a nitrous system not even hooked up gets some attention.....mine did. Tech guy felt better when I showed him there was no fuel line installed and told him no bottle in the trunk, but he was still looking real good since it was my first trip there(in July) with no tech card yet. My sticking shifter didn't help me a whole lot either as I had already made one false trip to tech then back to the pits.....that won't be happening this year:noway:.
OutCast Dec 19th, 09, 4:01 AM My first trip to Bremerton in the Punisher in flat black paint and zip ties and duct tape, the old guy at tech took one look at my cage and said, " Looks like you've done a good job here. Have fun today."
As TOG said, just follow the rules so they don't have to cart you out in a rubber bag with a zipper. It's ok, and cool, to have more safety gear than required. You will drive harder, and faster, because of it.
mattiepschevelle Dec 19th, 09, 4:24 AM Well hopefully I will be ok I hate to take me nice little tray out :(
gotago Dec 19th, 09, 9:56 AM So now I have 3/8" all thread, metal hold-down, and no problems getting through tech.
What does your set-up look like? I need to fix mine like that.
66 Buick Special Dec 19th, 09, 11:17 AM My set up is pretty basic Mark.
I pieced mine together but what I ended up with essentially this:
http://static.summitracing.com/global/images/prod/large/tay-48000_w.jpg
I bought a steel tray similar to this one, then bent the tabs 90 degrees so that they were flat. Drilled them to accept the 3/8" all thread, then used nylock nuts under the tabs to secure the all thread.
It might be a good idea to sandwich the tabs with another nut above it, that way when you remove the wing nuts for the hold-down, the all thread stays in place.
kettbo Dec 19th, 09, 1:25 PM I got a metal strip with the 3/8" holes pre-drilled. I slid the strip between the inner fender and the bottom of the stock battery tray. Then allthread with nuts and washers top and bottom through the matching top strip. Took me longer to go get the stuff than to do this.
No drilling, can return it to stock-appearing....
It does look a bit industrial but it works.
cobaltchev67 Dec 19th, 09, 1:49 PM I know I've posted this picture before....but if you look at the tray in the background you can see where I welded a somewhat thick piece of metal to the forward facing side of the tray, ground a relief in it to clear the core support, drilled a hole through it and welded a nut to the backside(which you can't see). The piece of allthred in the very top of the picture is the stock size nut that was already in there, pretty sure I need to re-tap it larger and put a piece of 3/8" in there since I think it's 5/16"(I know it's smaller than the other one).
In the foreground is the battery hold down piece I welded together with some thick metal that used to be part of my trailer, and a couple of pieces of angle iron from an old bed frame. The middle pieces mount the box in the trunk, so don't pay any attention to those.

cobaltchev67 Dec 20th, 09, 1:10 AM I don't know what Brian is laughing at so hard, but whatever....
Hey Brian, got that poseur clutch pedal in yet?:D

Somebody get something and write this down. Today, 20 December 2009, I read one of Kettbo's posts that made complete sense to me and I'm actually going to use. Maybe the Loch Ness monster exists after all..........
Its also 20 years to the day of my combat jump into Panama..........I'm really getting too old for this crap:yes:
FourEightyNine Dec 20th, 09, 12:04 PM I don't know what Brian is laughing at so hard, but whatever....
Hey Brian, got that poseur clutch pedal in yet?:D
I thought a post in this thread was very funny you are correct, I did forget to quote it though. I wasnt on the computer all day and thus I cant always place my laugh directly under the post I thought it should go to.
My apologies that you took offense to my laughter because it was right under the picture of the battery hold-down that you created.
But since you would like to call me(an idea I had on my race car) a poseur, maybe you would like to race me at the track to find the answer to your question?
1966malibu Dec 20th, 09, 1:36 PM But since you would like to call me(an idea I had on my race car) a poseur, maybe you would like to race me at the track to find the answer to your question?
Easy Brian, when I saw your post it looked like a slam to me also. I am sure like you said it was just a tired mistake. Also everyone here knows "Tweety" is no poseur. It was apparent to me Mike was joking when he made that comment. So cant we all just get along :D.
mattiepschevelle Dec 20th, 09, 1:53 PM so what was so funny?
1966malibu Dec 20th, 09, 2:03 PM Its also 20 years to the day of my combat jump into Panama..........I'm really getting too old for this crap:yes:
Mark one of my good friends and fellow drivers was with the Rangers during that little excursion. He has talked to me a couple of times about a tight spot they were in at a airport .
Thank you for what you do I sleep well knowing people like you have my back .
cobaltchev67 Dec 20th, 09, 2:36 PM To me it looked like a slam to everyone that has participated in this thread....I didn't care that it was under my post.
My question about the clutch pedal was in jest, trying to see if you had followed through with the idea, since I had given input and had not heard any more about it. I thought it was a good idea. I'll try to ask in a more non-offensive manner next time.
My apologies to George that it seems his well-meaning thread has gone to crap.
OutCast Dec 20th, 09, 3:57 PM ...Its also 20 years to the day of my combat jump into Panama

You certainly didn't just go for the 9 to 5 grind like the rest of civvies, now did you ?
