Hope you guys can give me some suggestions on this. We are replacing the speedometer bezel, ignition strip, glove box bezel on our 66. The problem is there is no way to remove the dash to get to the back of it, all the work will have to be done standing on my head and reaching in from the back. Has anyone done this?:(

The whole dash can come out, several bolts underneath, drop the steering column and bolts at the bottom of steering column where it goes through the fire wall. Not hard once you get the column down.

Yea, pretty funny, the roll cage prevents it from coming out. Full race car, tube chassis.:noway:

That information would have been helpful when asking the question.
I guess I was just supposed to know that you had a full cage.
Yes it will suck, you will have be a contortionist to get it done.
Good luck.

I was about to say that dash removal on my 66 was relatively easy, since my last several were Foxbodies. I would still go the route of removing the steering, etc. If the dash has to stay there, at least remove the heater controls, radio, glove box door, etc. Maybe take the heater box out if you still have it. Take the dash bolts out, and try to work from the top.

Otherwise this wil be difficult. I have managed to change the headlight switch with the dash in place.

Sorry Todd, I was'nt tryn to be rude, but when I said it won't come out I was'nt kidding. I was just wondering if the trim is put on w/nuts or some sort of clips that would reqiure special tools.

The whole speedo, gauge assembly is screwed in from the backside I think 5/16" bolt head. It will be difficult to get to the top part of that gauge bezel to get the assembly out.
If you take all the dash bolts/screws out, and steering column, can the dash be dropped down any? It seems impossible in my mind trying to picture getting this apart without getting the dash out of the car. I hope you are patient. I can visualize myself throwing a wrench across the garage on this one.

Actually, most of the fasteners (upper ignition strip, glovebox bezel, speedometer and speed bezel) all use 1/4" bolt-heads ( at least stock)... They are all screws, so no nuts...

You can use a nut-driver, socket/extension, or even a cordless drill (if it'll fit)...

But droptop is correct, the speedo comes out the backside... There are mounting tabs on the bezel that keep it from coming out the front...

As someone mentioned, CAN you drop the dash at all? maybe a few inches?

The upper strip is held by screws, but it also uses "U" shaped pieces to keep it tight against the metal...

I think any hope for the speedo will require the removal of the steering column, and probably/maybe the brake-pedal bracket...

The upper piece... IMO, VERY difficult if you can't drop it at all... IF you can drop 2 inches or so, might be pretty easy...

GOOD LUCK...

That sounds correct Thats why I put "I think" in my statement. Long day at work I'm tired.
Very good description on what needs to be done.

The dash will have to be dropped some.
There's simply no way you'll be able to remove the speedo cluster with it in place. There is not enough room.
Been here and tried...got the stiff neck to prove it. ;)
A 1/4" socket, a flexable extension on handle style nut driver is a big help here.

It can be done, with dash bolted in, but it is a major pain. I had to do the exact same thing with my racecar, dash cannot be removed due to roll cage. Removing the seats, shifter, etc., makes it easier, you can lay in floor instead of standing on your head, good tools, good lighting, and plenty of patience.

Thanks for the help, this no doubt is going to be a pain in the butt, It does'nt have the factory steering setup, and there is about 2" of space between it and the dash, hope I can drop it some. Its also alot tighter than I thought, the firewall has been moved back to fit the BBC in. Even though its not a street car we want to make the inside as close to original as possible, even has factory door panels and windows.
