: Just got 17's and 18's...what size tires?
kmfl Dec 17th, 09, 11:14 AM I just picked up a set of 17x8's and 18x9.5's, Coys c5's. They are used and currently have 245/45/17's on front and 275/40/18's on the back. I think I would like a little "taller" tire on it. Not much, just a little. I think the front is like 25.7 tall and rear is about 26.5 tall. If I could get another 1/2-3/4" that would be great. Also how wide can I fit on the rear? 295? I want the "buldge" of the tire to be the same front and rear. Any tire experts out there? Thanks for any input!
Lilracr Dec 17th, 09, 11:48 AM Letting us know what year and wheel offsets would help a good bit.
kmfl Dec 17th, 09, 12:10 PM 70 year and 4.5 BS front and 5.5 BS rear. Just wanting to know what tires look right on this size wheel that's a little taller than the current setup. I want them to be a fairly common size to keep price down.
72ragtop Dec 17th, 09, 12:27 PM When I was going to run those same wheels I planned on 245-45-17 and 295-45-18 tires. Ended up going to 18" front wheels, but do have the 295-45-18's, and think they fit these cars perfect. HTH Jim. http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y56/Chevelle454/Chevelle080.jpg
kmfl Dec 17th, 09, 1:18 PM How tall is that rear?
GenPac Dec 17th, 09, 1:48 PM How tall is that rear?
295/45-18 is 28.5" tall.
70 ELK Dec 17th, 09, 2:20 PM What size are the front tires? They--both front and back--look great, and you have convinced me for my Camino.
kmfl Dec 17th, 09, 2:22 PM Wow, 28.5 is tall. Doesn't look quite that tall. I think I'd prefer about 27.5. Can't seem to find a tire that equates to that...especially that is a common size.
72ragtop Dec 17th, 09, 2:51 PM Fronts are 245-45-18, almost too tall, but it is the least amount of sidewall I like. Jim.
70 ELK Dec 17th, 09, 3:37 PM Thanks, Jim! The tri-5 calculator shows those 245-45-18's to be 26.681." I also want the sidewall, and I live in a rural area where the roads can tear off headers or even oil pans on dropped front ends. Accordingly, your experience is very helpful to me, though I may go down to 235/285 front/rear, with 45-18s.
Thanks, again,
John
J.A.D. Dec 17th, 09, 8:32 PM I have Nitto 555's on coys C-5's. Rear wheel is 9.5", front is 8" wide. Back tires are 295/45-18. They actually measure about 27" tall. Fronts are 255/45-18. Measure about 26" on the car. From my experience, tires are usually shorter than their advertised size.
kmfl Dec 17th, 09, 9:49 PM Any pics of the nitto's?
72ragtop Dec 18th, 09, 1:07 AM Those are Nitto 555's. They actually measure at least 28" tall replacing 29-12.50-15 Hoosier Pro Street radials I used to run. Beleive me, your car will love the 295's, tried 255-70-15. then 275-60-15, and then the 29-12.50-15 radials.
chuckd71 Dec 18th, 09, 10:22 AM I have 275/45/18s on 9.5 inch rears with 5.5 of BS. It is tight. Tigher-than-I'd-like tight. But they fit. I can fit my small finger between the tire and fender. The inner lip of my fender doesn't HAVE to be rolled, but I'm doing it anyway so I can drop the car a couple inches in back. I doubt 295s would fit on my car.

here is my 71 with 17x8 4.5 bs on front 255/45/17 and 18x10 5.5 bs on rear 295/45/18. What kind of suspension to get that stance specifically the rear. Looks awsome

72ragtop Dec 18th, 09, 10:55 AM Thanks Tom, CPP 2" lowering springs in the rear (dirt cheap on Ebay) and Eibach Pro Kit springs in the front.
ttbb71 Dec 18th, 09, 11:00 AM Thanks Jim. One last question did you have to go with a smaller shock like a camaro shock?
72ragtop Dec 18th, 09, 11:15 AM Nope, same std Bilsteins that have been on my car for years.

Is your car stock height? I love the stance, although I think I am going to drop mine a couple inches. Would the wheel/tire setup have worked with a couple inch drop? Or would you get rubbing? I love it though. Looks great & love the color.
Todds34rod Dec 24th, 09, 4:34 PM Attach a picture once you get these on the car. I would like to see it.
I am going with those size of wheels as well. I am still debating on the style and brand of wheel so I haven't purchased anything yet.
I will probably stay with Americans though. Thought about the Rev wheel. It looks nice and priced nice as well.
Thanks
ttbb71 Dec 29th, 09, 4:26 PM Thanks Jody. Sorry just got back on to the board. That is stock stance for now. Just ordered and received rear lowering springs from CPP. Looks like there will not be any clearance issues, but not totally sure yet. The car is in storage for the winter so won't get a chance to put the springs on until end of Feb or begin of Mar.
