I'm now in search of a rearend for my 66. For right now I'm looking for anything to put under there to make it roll, but if I can get a 12 bolt, or 9" right now that'd be great. The question is, will a 12 bolt from a 68-72 car fit under my car? Is the geometry the same? Someone was telling me that the later models are just a hair longer than the early models. I guess if anyone has something to sell, I'm definitely interested as well.

The 68-72 12-bolts are about 1" wider than the 65-67 housings. The spring perches on 65-66 12-bolts are flat pads that use a bolt and retainer to hold the springs in place. 67 and later A-bodies have a perch with a "hat" that the spring goes over.

the above info is true, but it doesnt cause any problems. The 68-72 rear will work fine in the 66, just use the 66 control arms and rear springs.

Can't use the 66 springs on the 67 and later rear without modifying the spring perch.

yes you can, done it many times. My 66 springs are also different on the upper half than 67 up springs, open on top instead of pigtailed, so I doubt I could of used 67 up springs on a 66 frame.

I will just add to this...
I have only owned 1966 Chevelle and El Caminos (15+), and have swapped several later rearends in...
The later 68-72) will bolt right in using the 66 control arms and springs...
I am not sure about other years chassis/spring combos...
