: Interior Removed: What Next? W/ PICS
sermon Dec 15th, 09, 4:29 PM I removed the bucket seats and seatbelts today. There was no carpet down just some old what looks like roofing tar paper. I got all of that out with a putty knife and a screw driver. There is a little rust toward the front of the floor pans but nothing i could knock a hole through. i was thinking of wire brushing the whole floor to take it down to the metal. What should i spray it with once i have cleaned it up and removed the surface rust? i am gonna put down new BLACK carpet. here are a few pics.

wills65 Dec 15th, 09, 4:47 PM I would hit it with the wire brush, clean it, prime it and paint it. Unless you want to go with Por-15, thats probably the easiest way to do it.
I think that POR 15 would work great for that
sermon Dec 15th, 09, 4:56 PM I have done pleanty of grinding/ wire brushing to get rid of rust like this on my work truck so thats what im used to. I have never used POR-15. What is the benefit of using the POR-15 and where do you get it. I'm really just looking to clean the floor up before i put the carpet down. What type of primer/ paint should i use. Can it be just a rustoleum in a spray can from lowes? Its gonna be covered by carpet.
sermon Dec 15th, 09, 5:23 PM OK. I just looked into the POR-15 stuff. there webpage has a 3 step process. If i wire brushed everything, do i still need to do all three steps or just the POR-15 third step?
XcessIV Dec 15th, 09, 5:32 PM Try Eastwoods Rust Encapsulator which I have used in a few areas. They reccommend that you apply it using two coats. It's not cheap but you can save a few bucks if you buy it from their Ebay store vs. their online store. I never used POR15 but know a few people that have used both and prefer the Eastwoods brand mainly due to that it does not break down to UV exposure. You won't have any of that in the floor pan areas but you might have some left over that you wish to use in other areas that could be exposed to UV. Best wishes with your project.
oldtimeparts Dec 15th, 09, 6:51 PM I used POR-15 on my 66 El Camino 5-6 years ago on the floor pans and it still looks like new, if you use POR-15 in an area that is exposed to the sun the UV'S will hurt it. In those areas I would put a top coat.
Pate Dec 15th, 09, 11:02 PM I did the same thing to my car last summer. I used Por-15 with great results. I got to admire it for a few hours until the carpet was installed.
sevenup Dec 16th, 09, 11:27 PM i used eastwoods rust encapsulator also, great stuff, can be sprayed too...
koolkeith19 Dec 17th, 09, 1:23 PM I am at the same spot on my 69... with the Por-15 how do you apply it?
Do they sell spray cans or do you need a gun? Or is it brushed on?
sorry I am newbie!
hpsherlin Dec 17th, 09, 1:51 PM I did the POR15 to my floor board and also the roof after removing the insulation and headliner.
You can spray, roll, or brush it on. Wear gloves as you DO NOT want to get it on your skin. Won't come off.
Also, make sure to put a sound deadner down on the floor before putting the carpet back.
I used factory sound deadner (thick asphalt/tar paper like stuff) but you can use others.
Do a search.
Have fun.
