: Body work costs?
badcbr Dec 14th, 09, 7:33 PM How much have you paid to have new quarter panels installed?
How much have you paid to have an inner fender well replaced?
This would be with the assumption that the quarter panel and wheel well were new replacement panels.
Thanks for the info.
1st timer Dec 14th, 09, 8:07 PM $500 per quarter panel (including reworking the new quarter panel to the right size) - complete removal and replacement
Dave Birdwell Dec 14th, 09, 8:12 PM Inner fenderwell.... are you talking the front inner fenderwell, or the rear outer or inner wheelhouse, the piece behind the rear quarter panel????
Andy69 Dec 14th, 09, 8:14 PM $500 isn;t bad
badcbr Dec 14th, 09, 8:17 PM Sorry, yes the rear outter wheel well.
Dave Birdwell Dec 14th, 09, 10:10 PM The old time labor guides showed 16.5 hours to replace the full rear quarter panel, and add 3.0 to replace the outer wheelhouse. Thats about right, to do it correctly takes about 20 hours, plus any other fab work to repair any other hidden rust. At $40, thats $800. Add to that the time and materials to paint it after replacing it.
BlueSS454 Dec 14th, 09, 10:18 PM I paid $0 cuz I did it myself. But, Dave is right on, $40/hour about 20 hours per side. That's also without getting into replacing the trunk floor/drop offs, and inner wheel houses. To do a complete rear replacement on a Chevelle (2 quarters, deck filler, full trunk with drop offs, tail panel, inner/outer wheelhouses, cab floor) is about 100 hours give or take.
berner Dec 15th, 09, 8:28 AM $40 an hour? Is that getting somebody to do it on the side? Body shops up here are getting close to $100/hr. A friend manages a body shop, told me they charge $1500/quarter.
Raven1 Dec 15th, 09, 10:53 AM Hourly prices are all over the place and sideliners will charge less. But I will say this. It makes no sense to charge less for the same quality work. Some will do it for less because they want to secure the job. $40 plus materials is common but there should be more for overhead, even working from the house.
Do all businesses drop their rates when all the equipment is paid for? I think not. People bust their hump to look forward to the additional profit after paying for everything. No excavation firm is dropping their site work prices 50% because their iron is paid off. Nor is a bodyshop who works to buy and pay off equipment and a building. Working for cheap labor hurts the other guy, even if the other guy is working out of his house. Many legal and registered shops are located on the same parcel of land their house is. Should their rates be any lower than someone else's? But that's the way it is and always will be, won't it.
webfoot Dec 15th, 09, 2:01 PM About 7 years ago I had a full quarter, outer wheelhouse, and trunk to window filler replaced and it was about $1500.
Chris,
Firsts you need to shop around for a good shop/ metal man , that knows your car . Not just body shop that filles your car with bondo. Check around and see other cars like your they have done . Look them over very good before jumping in with them to do the job. Good work takes time and money.. But in the long run your car will be done right .. No rework down the road

You can look here to see how the inside should look before the 1/4's are installed. Look at all the photos on album 7,8,and 9 . A good shop will take a lot of photos to show the customer the work done on the car to . http://www.mikescustomcars.com/projects/projects.asp?proj=SWalker&album=7&pic=338 (http://www.anrdoezrs.net/click-3497329-10546635?url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.mikescustomcars.com% 2Fprojects%2Fprojects.asp%3Fproj%3DSWalker%26album %3D7%26pic%3D338)

BlueSS454 Dec 15th, 09, 5:45 PM Mike, I don't know where you got those parts prices, but they should be doubled. I've yet to see a full quarter panel for $250. Outer wheel houses are about $65 each, and drop offs are $50 each.
I know a guy that specializes in metal/bodywork on Chevelles, and he is $40 an hour for as many hours as it takes.

Tom,
The prices are right !!!

If MCC is building the car/body/quarter job for a customer . The prices are low on the parts we use (Goodmark/Dii/ and others) . We make our money off of the good work we do . Not the parts.
PS. We have 2 NEW full quarters RH & LH (Goodmark) in the boxes for a 66-67 in the classifieds now for $ 300 ea o.b.o. I will take $ 250 ea right now for them .
Thanks,
MCC

Are you using lead on the sail panel transition? If not, what are you using?
Thanks

Are you using lead on the sail panel transition? If not, what are you using?
Thanks
We have used lead before on some projects. I am not a big fan of it .
If we are installing new quarters / quarters & roof ,we will fit the sail panel to the roof better than GM did back in the day . Making the sail and roof flat with each other . Then we will cut some 18 ga sheet metal to fill in the gaps . We will weld these up solid (Roof & Quarters). Then we will grind them down. We DA sand them after the grinding ,then we primer it . If you take the time you can do this with out no body filler !!!! 1 coat of a good etching primer & 2 coats of a good 2K primer and block it .
But if welding is not your thing . You can clean the seam between the sail and roof good . Epoxy primer the sail, seam , and roof . Let it sit for 24 hours . Come back and lightly sand it with 120 to 180 . Not to cut the epoxy down (No metal spots). You can now use a fiberglass filler(Dyna-Glass or some other ) to fill the seam in . Make sure you get no air in the dyna-glass (Pinholes) !!! DO NOT FILL YOUR SEAM UP WITH ONE COAT !!! Do 2 or 3 small coats to get it built up . Sand between coat... After you have it built up . Use a good body filler like Rage Gold or Rage Xtreme or some other .. Sand it down to your liking and primer it .
Hope this help you out some ..
Good luck on your projects
Thanks,
MCC
