: Rear Axle wear

I pulled the axles on my '67 Chevelle and on one of them (passenger side) the bearing wear is quite pronounced. Would you recommend one of those kits that repositions the bearing on the axle or a replacement shaft? I'm doing this on the cheap now with plans to LATER replace the rear-end with a 12 bolt or a Ford 9". I do NOT want that expense now.
Thanks for your help.

I'd replace the shaft. You could probably get the entire rear end for 50 bucks....

I got several years out of the axle saver bearings before they started to leak oil. They are affordable and easy to install. If all you want is a temporary repair, then they are OK.

I want to replace my 28 spline 10 bolt axles, local dealer has no listing. Where else should I look?
OPG lists them for $149 ea.

This is kinda out of date... but I see Summit lists a complete set of axles, bearings, and seals from Superior Axle and Gear for around $260. Sounds like a pretty good deal. Anyone have contrary experiences with this product? I may need to do this on my 12 bolt.

The Superior kit is a good deal. I have a set in a 65 and they fit exactly. No more rumbling or leaks.

I've had axle saver bearings in my 68 for over 10 years and still haven't had any problems.

If you are not going to use BigGearHead, a member of this site, then try Randy's Ring and pinion.

Ok... I've sent a PM to BigGearHead but did not see anything but truck on Randy's web site.

As to the Moser axles... that is actually a fairly comparable price to the Superior once you factor in that the Superior price includes bearings, seals, and wheel studs. Interesting that Moser shows a lower price than Summit :)

I guess I better just take the thing apart and find out for sure what I need. But with a left turn grumble, a considerable right seal leak, and a seal that appears to stick out of the tube by 1/8 to 1/4 inch I would say the writing is on the wall: bad bearing + likely axle saver previously installed = new axle + bearing.

Thanks for the inputs,
Steve
