: Cannot connect to WORKGROUP PC

Have 4 desktops and 1 laptop.
2 desktops running XP Pro, 1 desktop with XP Home and the laptop with Vista Home.
Computer #1 is my desktop with XP Pro (WINXP-PRO)
Computer #2 is wife's desktop with XP Home (LYNDA)
Computer #3 is spare desktop with XP Pro (PADDY)
Computer #4 is laptop with Vista Home (LAPTOP)
All 4 are networked under WORKGROUP

I had to install a new drive in my main PC (#1). I use the laptop (#3)occasionally and I have Synctoy set up on the laptop to transfer files from my main desktop (#1) to the laptop. I'd map the drives needed on the laptop from the main PC and use Synctoy to copy those files I needed.

It seems now that even though my main PC shows up in the WORKGROUP on the laptop I can't map drives from the main PC to the laptop. The PC shows up and the shared folders show up on the laptop when I browse to select a shared network folder but when I try to map a shared folder I get an error saying "Not enough server storage is available to process this command".

I looked up the message and found references to creating/increasing a registry entry under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/SYSTEM/CurrentControlSet/Services/lanmanserver/parameters IRPStackSize to 14 or 20. On my main PC (that I cannot connect to from the laptop), the IRPStackSize entry was not in the above key so I added it and rebooted the PC. Still could not connect from the laptop. I checked the registry in the laptop (Vista Home) and it does have the key with a value of 0x0000000e (14), the same as I set my main PC to.

I tried mapping a drive on the laptop to my wife's computer (XP Home) as well as the spare PC and both worked fine. I checked her registry and she has no such key either just as mine originally did not have this key yet the laptop was able to connect and map a drive. The spare PC that the laptop can map a drive to does not have the registry entry either.

So, the laptop can map drives to my wife's PC and the spare PC (neither have IRPStackSize entries) by not my PC although it can see my shared folders. My PC can also map shared folders on my wife's PC and the spare but not the laptop. Both my wife's PC and the spare can map to shared folders on my PC and each other, but neither can see shared folders on the laptop.

Nothing on any of the other 3 computers has changed, only mine. Here's a diagram of my home network. Green arrows can map drives to shared folders, red arrows cannot.

Thoughts?

It seems that the laptop is the issue, but it is puzzling that you have 2 XP Pro machines with different results.

I assume you tried disabling any firewalls and or antivirus applications. Are you getting event viewer errors? Is this a new problem? I would check the physical layer, try a different combination of CAT5 cables and network ports. Do you get the same results if the laptop is connected to your network wired or wireless? You could also have a browser election issue.

How much memory installed on each machine. I've seen this problem at work on client systems a few times. The registry change fixed it sometimes but not always. Can't remember some of the other remedies right now. Hopefully it will come back to me.

BTW: My wife's name is Lynda as well, don't see it spelled with a 'y' too often.

Laptop has 2GB and my PC has 3GB. Nothing has changed with the exception of a fresh load of XP Pro on my PC. Before that the laptop could map to drives on my PC and Synctoy ran with no problem. Now the laptop can't map drives on my PC, it can see them in the workgroup but won't map them even though it'll map to the other two PCs with even less memory.

Is this how your trying to map:
Right click on 'my computer' and check 'map network drives' for the one's your looking for.

No, I'm initially trying from Windows Explorer via Tools > Map Network Drive. Same dialog box though. I resorted to manually attempting to map after the batch file I had set up using "net use" kept failing to map the drives.

Have you tried browsing the shared folders using UNC, \\<Machine Name>\<Share Name> ? Probably won't work either.

Firewall?

I usually just hit start > run >type "\\computer name" and had one that I could not log onto.
I finally found out it was the firewall on that computer keeping me from seeing it.

When trying to map a drive from any computer to another, the destination is visible in the WORKGROUP group. Laptop just can't connect to PC anymore. It used to before I reloaded a fresh copy of XP Pro on my desktop. Laptop will see the desktop and all the folders I have shared, it just won't connect.

Researching the problem with Google, it seems Vista is a hit/miss with networking in a workgroup. A couple of others have the same problem as I do, that being it worked at one time but not now, while the majority of users have never gotten it (Vista) to work. Maybe I'll just update the Vista laptop to Win7 and be done with it.
