I am restoring an original # matching 66 SS 396 Chevelle with a powerglide transmission. Did it come with a 153 or 168 tooth flexplate. Should the housing on the starter be aluminum or cast?

All 66 big blocks had 168 tooth flexplate or flywheel. The starter offered for the 168 tooth flexplate or flywheel was cast iron with offset mounting bolts.

James Larson started some good discussion recently about what the original looked like.

Did they use a different torque converter in the powerglide for the 14" flexplate? of does the regular powerglide converter bolt up to the big flexplate? I dont know, so Im just asking. jim

I just switched from a powerglide to a 700R4 and used the powerglide flexplate. It had two bolt patterns on it.

Was the 153 tooth only used on small blocks?

I always thought M01 Heavy Duty Clutch was the 168 tooth setup, which was standard equipment on the big block cars.
