: Will I find my build sheet?
spinshop Dec 11th, 09, 4:22 PM When did GM start hidding build sheets?I looked for mine in some places but did`nt find it.It`s not in the drivers seat, back seat or under the carpet or door panels.Where else could it be IF it is in the car?The only other places I have`nt looked was on the gas tank and the back of the pass. seat.Oh,I have a 64 malibu SS.
Thanks
floyd66 Dec 11th, 09, 4:28 PM Don't like your chances
FWIW it wasn't a game of hide and seek. The cars were just trash cans.

I don't know how common build sheets were in a 64...you might still wanna try under the carpet...in the frame holes...
DaleM Dec 11th, 09, 5:21 PM Fremont was the only plant I'm aware of that has used the common (70-72 style) build sheets. All the other plants used Body & Chassis broadcast sheets up until 1969 or so when some began to change.
Ditto to floyd66's statement. They weren't 'hidden' for us to find 20/30/40 years later; just easier to keep the assembly areas cleaner if one could stuff them in the interior, on top the gas tank, or glue them to the inner fenders.
FWIW, the Body Broadcast Sheets didn't usually much info on them that's of use today and Chassis Broadcast Sheets weren't much better with just the engine suffix code and some other minor items. Nothing like the build sheet of later years when all the installed items were listed like those in block #107 at the bottom.
joerob727 Dec 12th, 09, 12:03 AM Not sure exactly when the practice started but I am holding (well, just put it down to type) my build sheet from my '69 Malibu. In support of Dales' statement, it is a Freemont Plant '69.
It actually shocked me when I stumbled upon it a couple of months ago while dissasembling for paint. Not to brag, but it is in about as pristine a condition as I can imagine a document that was printed 40+ years ago. Not a single wrinkle, just one 1/4 inch wear hole from a screw head in an otherwise blank section. Looks like an old piece of parchment from a hundred years ago, just yellowed enough. Under scrutiny, you can tell where the lettering from the original form is different ink and font from the stamp in the top right as well as the build data. I mention this because I almost thought it was a copy of an original at first because of it's condition. Considering where I have found them before, under back seat, on fuel tank, etc., I have only ever before seen them folded, wrinkled, torn, water damaged, weathered, etc..
Blah, blah, blah, . . . I know, just get to the point.
I was removing my drivers side inner door panel and there it was, taped to the back of the door panel, nestled carefully between the panel and the watershield. Never wet, never wrinkled.
The only downside is that the car is originally a 6 banger and is now a 383, 700R4, Hotchkis suspended street car. If only it were an SS!
1969 El Camino Dan Dec 12th, 09, 1:01 AM Joe, please scan and post up a copy of that. We love to see such bits of history.
Does yours have dealer data on it too?

I'll see if I can scan it sometime this weekend. Home scanner on the fritz, might have to wait till the missus can do it at work on Monday though.
I need to find some time and a decoder ring myself, I'd be interested to know exactly how it was built.

Thanks I did`nt look in the frame holes but I will now.I replaced the carpet and the drivers seat cover. The whole inside was gutted and powder blasted. The only places I have`nt look was in the pass. seat because it is in such good shape I hated to take it apart and the gas tank but over winter I plan on taking out the tank.

Spinshop, since you are in CT. do you have a Framingham built car?
If so, you might have some Broadcast sheets behind the front and rear seat back upholstery covering. You have to really take the seat fabric COMPLETELY OFF to find them.
That is where I found two sheets on my Framingham '65 SS. One was in the rear seat and one was in the front seat.

At least Baltimore, KC and Framingham were beginning to use the generic build sheet (like Fremont) in 1969 as well and some plants continued to use two Broadcast Copy sheets.
hpsherlin Dec 12th, 09, 3:46 PM Good info.
On the same vein, has a build sheet ever been found in an Atlanta 67SS?
I might have dreamt it but I thought I saw a thread some years ago that one has never been found.
Supervisors must have been picky about making sure the sheets were thrown in the trash if so?

Thanks for the compliment! Wish it was summer again - she is all wrapped up for the season now.
I think you can remove a cover without ruining it, but I don't think you can take it off and have it fit exactly like it did before. The location of the fabric relative to the foam creases will be tough to re-align. To get the hog rings in the same spot will be a challenge because the holes will be too big a second time. I guess if you remove it plan to spend as much time and effort to get it all back together again as you would to just replace it with new foam and fabric. (my foam was all crumbly even through the car was taken good care of for the most part) The sheets I found were mostly under the foam if I recall correctly.
Good luck with the search. :)

They haven't been found because they never existed in Atlanta in 1967. However, Body & Chassis Broadcast Copy sheets did and they have been found.

Hey Dan,
Sorry it took so long. I finally gave up on the scanner and just took a picture of it. Not the best, but mostly legible. Here ya go.

It is pretty rare to find a build sheet in the early cars, it wasn't really supposed to happen, AFAIK, they were to be disposed of, the car became a convienient place to leave them. Good luck with your search.
david bull Jan 10th, 10, 8:51 AM The two that I have been fortunate enough to find(69 427/435,m22,4:11vette&71 camino 350/270 non ss w/tach-gauge pkg) have been on top of the gas tank. Both were clean enough to read.Nice to be able to verify options on the vehicle.I was lucky enough to find the original dealer invoice in the glove box of the camino.DBULL
