We are planning this saturday to redo the front suspension on my 64 Suburban, and read all the instructions and got a little confused.

The plan is this, we will be doing one side @ a time and doing both sides this weekend, just one side a day.

We will be replacing this following, Coil Springs, Shocks, Upper Ball Joints, Upper inner shafts, lower inner shafts, control arm bumpers, and the lower ball joint. There will be lots of cleaning of the upper and lower a-arms so thats why it will be taking a whole day.

I was reading the ball joint instructions and it says if you replace the ball joint you MUST replace the steering knuckle. I looked under the truck this morning and see that there is some piece (steering related) attached to the lower ball joint that attaches to the adjustable sleeve. Is this what they are talking about or is this something else?

I want to only have to take the arms apart once, the following weekend we will be replacing the inner/outer tie rod ends, and adjustable sleeves. So everything will be replaced.

I know its no chevelle but it is a sweet chevy smile.gif .

Gumball,
What brand ball joints? Many manufacturers include a disclaimer with a small picture showing a BJ thats loose in the knuckle or spindle and then it must be replaced.
If the play (or looseness) is in the ball joint
just replace the BJ.If the play is at the nut holding the BJ to the knuckle you then must replace both the knuckle and the BJ.Hope this helps.

gumball,
Moog instruction sheets are not model specific.
Depending on the type of ball joint pressed, rivoted or threaded, you can get the same tech sheet whether its a chevy or a ford or a henway.

Well after not finding this steering knuckle (4wd application) things went great, the original bolts all came out NO PROBLEM!! GAWD i love arizona cars/trucks. Sandblasted all 4 arms and lots of other random hardware. Truck handles quite a bit better now very happy. Took 2 days but WELL WELL worth it.

Can't wait to do the chevelle now smile.gif
