: Whats this engine worth?
bb1966chevelle Dec 9th, 09, 9:47 AM I have a guy interested in buying a complete, great running big block.
I believed the motor to be a 454, but after some decoding help from a fellow TC member, it appears that this engine is a 69 Chevelle 402 325hp.
Below are the casting numbers and info that a the TC member came up with. I'm not sure if I want to actually sell this motor now or not, but what would be a reasonable price for it just incase I do decide to let it go?
It3969854 = 396/402 ,69-72 ,2 or 4 bolt
CJA = 69 402 Chevelle , 325hp ,RPO code L-35 ,w/4-Spd & 4-Brl
Assembled Aug 11 at Tonawanda.
Thanks in advance!

look, this can be a regional thing, and you have to have a price in mind.
i'll let you in on my situation. i have almost the identical engine. i have the block bare, bored .010, i have the heads complete. i have ALL internals, new in the box (except connecting rods), i have everything from the carb. to the pan, it comes with a muncie m21 (rebuilt with 100 miles), clutch and bell housing, i can't get 2k. so it sits, in my garage waiting for a future project. the crank was over $400, and i refuse to give it away.
Birddog1970 Dec 9th, 09, 2:54 PM Is this a complete '69 396 (intake to oil pan) or just the bare block? I have seen complete matching date motors go for a good penny, ONLY if a person is looking for a "Date Correct" motor for their build.
Still other factors to determine the value, condition of the block, current bore etc and if you plan on having the block checked prior to sale or if that's the buyers responsibility.
Sounds like you've got a good one there.
I have to say that I have never seen a 69 402.
I do know that they were using the 396 bored .030 over late in the 69 Production as they phased into 1970 vehicles.
(was that because the 396/325 hp was such a dog?)
Looks like it's a Chevelle engine too.
Should be able to get some good $$$ for it to the right guy.
bb1966chevelle Dec 9th, 09, 10:17 PM Thanks for the replies guys!
I haven't gotton many on this motor at all. To be honest, I'm not a #'s guy, but i agree that to the right person this motor could be worth something. Like I said though,I didnt want to even sell it, but since this has all come up, I'm up in the air about it.
I didn't even know the 402's were out in 69 either.
Maybe I'll try Feebay and see what happens.
Thank you for your time!
droptop396 Dec 10th, 09, 11:17 AM what is your asking price, since nobody has mentioned a dollar amount?
I am curious to what it is worth as well. I have a complete 1970 Chevelle 402BB - 330HP.
basically the same engine. I would like to know a reasonable figure so that I know how much to ask for it in the near future when I go to sell it.
rbwjr325 Dec 10th, 09, 11:32 AM I have a 70 402,290 hds. Settin on a stand.Complete. Everybody wants it,,,,,,for free,well almost free.Ill make a planter out of it for the wife before I give it away.
Bunz-T Dec 10th, 09, 11:53 AM I bought a 69 JC motor and matching 063 heads complete, through the machine shop and built with warranty for $2800. Back out $300 for shipping and sales tax and you are at $2500.
I would rather have all of the above for the purchase price than pay half the amount with no guarantees. With a 8/11 date it narrows the number of cars it will date up with to only a very few. If any.
bb1966chevelle Dec 10th, 09, 2:46 PM Thinking that the engine was a 454, and the fact that I don't really want to sell it, I won't let it go for less then $1000. I know thats probably high, but it's one of them things that if I get what I want, I'll sell. If I dont get what I want, then I'll keep it for a future project.
Beings that the motor turned out to be a 402, and what I believe to be the most desirable time for Chevelles, I just wanted to see if $1000 was in the ball park.
Since I've gotton no real reply as to what it's worth in a complete, unmolested, and great running condition, I think I'm still firm on the $1000.
Maybe I'll run it on Ebay and see what happens just for the hell of it.
Dean Dec 10th, 09, 2:51 PM I think you should be able to get $1000.00 for it with no problem.
(after the Christmas spending is over)
Bunz-T Dec 10th, 09, 3:08 PM Well I am a little surprised as you are one of the few that is in touch with reality. At $1000 you are only about $400 above core price for a motor with some life left in it. You should have no trouble getting it sold.
What are the heads casting numbers.

i think we all learned that throwing #'s sometimes doesn't work, but giving you exaples of regional sales or personel expierence gives you an avenue to work with.
i think your asking price is well with in reality in this economy, time of year, and region. now, trying to chase the low ballers away... that's why mine is still in the garage....
Chris R Dec 10th, 09, 8:59 PM If its a good runner. 1000 bucks is a fair price. Especially if you can let a buyer see it run.
bb1966chevelle Dec 10th, 09, 10:50 PM Thanks for the replies!
I will get the casting #'s off of the head and post them for you to see.
Seems as though $1000 is reasonable after reading the replies.... The only thing now is...... Do I really want to part with it or keep it for a future project??????    :)
Thanks again guys!
Bunz-T Dec 11th, 09, 6:41 AM Keeping it should depend on the actual condition or mileage. Then you have to decide whether you would rather have $1000 in it or $2500 in a fresh mildly built 454 with more HP and current gas friendly.

68_elky Dec 11th, 09, 4:41 PM If it has a vin on it, you might want to post it here to see if it goes with a car that a member has and is looking for it? Unless you already know where the car is.
