I know I've seen this before, but what quick ratio steering box do I need to look for to put on my 66? I hear that the Impala and Grand Cherokee will work but what years? Thanks!!

I have a Monte SS steering box in my 66. However I didnt realize it until the car was finished, nor did they mantion anything in the mag article they did on them. But I lost some of my turning radius with the monte SS box. What I needed to use was a 94-96 Impala SS box. That has the correct turning radius. Wait till you see the core charge on a impala one at the parts stores though. WOW!!

1993-1998 Grand Cherokee box is the best box available. It has the largest turning circle of any OE bolt in box and uses the 12.7:1 ratio.

Check ebay.

You want the Caprice 9C1 (police package) or Grand Cherokee 12.7:1 quick ratio box ... the G-body (Monte SS, Grand National, 442, etc)12.7:1 boxes all have a more restrictive output shaft travel than the Caprice 9C1 or the Grand Cherokees' boxes. I installed a 1992 Caprice 9C1 box on my 1972 El Camino, it made the car much more enjoyable to drive. With the Caprice or Grand Cherokee box, you will not lose any turning radius, which is a very good thing with these old cars, especially when doing parking manuevers and what not.

The GN box increases the turning radius 12%. Never noticed it, because...

No matter what gear box you use, with any tire/wheel combo much larger than F-70-14s, you'll be rubbing the frame due to increased tire size before being able to utilize the minimum turning radius.

Nothing makes for an increase in turning radius like "oversize" tires.

Thanks guys!! I think I will go with the 84-88 Monte Carlo SS box. I currently have a 13" Grant steering wheel in the car now and that seems to help out alot too.

Maybe with a "taller" tire, but I run a 265/50/15 on the front of my 66 Chevelle, moderately lowered, and still can get full lock without contacting the frame or swaybar... Even extremely lowered it barely rubbed the fender lip (actually, the "inner fender mounting bolt" near the lip), a scuffed the paint on the sway bar...

I am running the AGR box that has the greater travel (similar to the Caprice and Grand Cherokee)...

John Thanks for 2 more great links on the G-body box, John!! graemlins/thumbsup.gif

It's definitely a simple swap.

It's terrific having a Chevelle that has the same steering/road-feel as a Buick Grand National!! smile.gif

I was running a 265/50/15 on the front of my 66, and it was rubbing when I cranked the wheel in reverse. So I went with a smaller tire, because I will be lowering it with 2" drop spindles.
