: ford turbo 2.3 stand alone & tuning questions..
BowtieAaron Dec 7th, 09, 11:56 AM my friends got a notchback mustang with a ford thunderbird turbo coupe/mustang SVO motor swapped in it, and its to the point where he needs to get into the fuel tables to tune it.
its basically a stock 2.3 TC motor with the 85 SVO turbo on 20psi with a ported head, and upper & lower intakes, ported 85 turbo manifold, FMIC 2.5" piping, 3" DP and exhaust out the back, stock 36lbs injectors and an AFPR, and the infamous ford vain meter (or vam.. what ever its called).
the car is dead rich at 10.0 AFR under WOT until 5000 when it leans out to 12.0 AFR. the AFR doesnt do anything with the AFR. pressure is set at 43psi.
anyone have any experience with a standalone or any other forms of tuning these ancient TFI fords? i am trying to talk him into making a megasquirt ECM and running that as a stand alone, but im not sure if he wants to go through the trouble.
i know there are guys running 11's with his set up plus a cam, but im unsure what ECM/tuning software they use.
thanks

Tom Mobley Dec 7th, 09, 1:30 PM I don't think that Ford deal is programmable. I could be wrong though. Not a Ford guy. I think he needs to come up with a programmable computer setup. Only 4 injectors, he could use one those new style ones, much smaller, weathertight, available pre-assembled only. THe vendors that handle the the customer end of that deal are very knowledgeable and helpful. try http://www.glensgarage.com/catalog/index.php look at the preassembled stuff on the left.
BowtieAaron Dec 7th, 09, 1:51 PM thanks tom.
yeah the PCM isnt really that accessible and real out dated.
i have no issues making an ECM for him. i found a bunch of stuff on megasquirts site and DIYEFI.com on making the ECM. its just a shame he couldn’t swap to some stupid escort or mustang computer and use hptuners or something and be able to do it. kind of like us chevy guys using V6 lumina computers with vette chips, or LS1 computers on LT1s with DIS.
i know we are a chevy forum, but this place has too many knowledgeable people who know what they are doing, and that is the reason i asked it here.
thanks again, ill check the link when im home.

Doug F. Dec 7th, 09, 2:43 PM You can run one with a Holley Commander 950. Some people are..
Find a used one and you have a low cost solution.
Or use the new stuff coming out from Holley, or FAST, or other options.
Tom Mobley Dec 7th, 09, 5:00 PM look at the microsquirt, not the assembled products.
GLHS60 Dec 8th, 09, 12:42 AM A lot of 2.3 Ford turbo guys use 88/89 Chrysler 2.2/2.5 turbo electronics with good success.
Thanks
Randy
BowtieAaron Dec 8th, 09, 6:05 AM thanks guys

Jwhalen07 Apr 15th, 10, 10:07 PM try getting ahold of www.streetandstrip.com. My buddy Tyler has a low 10 maybe high 9 2.3 turbo coupe.. He is sick with the 2.3 fords.. I think that is his website. If not just google it.

Aaron:
Sorry to take so long in replying, but somehow I missed your post. I have no first hand experience with Ford turbo's but I have many Turbo Dodge vehicles with the 88-89 system, or SMEC as it is called.
Single Module Engine Controller.
Check this link or search MERKUR SMEC and you should find all the info you need. Let me know what you think.
Thanks
Randy

BowtieAaron Jun 8th, 10, 6:00 AM jeff,
thanks man, we've been to everyone of them. members on all. the only thing is, i didnt get too involved because it was not my car. he has little patience for stuff, and the car was just a headache. there were other motor problems too which caused it to run like crap yet.

Jebchevelle Jun 10th, 10, 3:40 AM yeah my first turbo 2.3 went great but I had already worked on a 85 SVO and a thunderbird Turbo coup before I converted my 91 non turbo 2.3 to a turbo 2.3 new forged internals new FRP 42lb injectors and custom cam and header. the computer was done by a place in akron Ohio they new what they where doing so I let them do it I believe the burned a chip for the stock non turbo ECM if memory serves worked great was my first 12 second car nothing too fancy but not bad for a 4cyl this was in 1998 so was a few years ago lol.
