Had lots of clearcoat peeling so I spent all day a couple weekends ago sanding with 150grit. Took it to have it sprayed with PPG epoxy primer. Came out looking awesome...wish I would have spent more time blending the bad peeling spots now.

Don't shoot the messenger but epoxying over failing clearcoat is not a panacea. If eventual topcoat is the objective all that epoxy will have to come off as well as 100% of the failing paint under it. But if you get a few years out of it the way it is and your happy then that's fine too.

yup, it will go to bare metal next time, its been painted twice over the factory paint so some places are too thick

this cost me $200 labor for tape/remove bumpers/spray, a day of my time, and $200 materials (still have half a gallon left)

looks a million times better than the cracked paint from my wreck, a fender that didn't match (leftover paint was thinned down too much), a roof that was rattle canned black after some rust repair, and a hood/trunk with foot sized clearcoatless spots

this was the best temp fix I could think of as I simply cannot afford a new paint job anytime soon

So will the PPG epoxy primer act as a sealer over the standard primers that will allow moisture to penetrate?

I like the semi flat look.

Yes but it's not UV resistant. I have no idea what projected longevity is based on varying exposure times. I don't know if anyone has done a study on it.

that looks pretty sweet.
I was thinking of doing my "'70" ElCo as a satin gray with satin black hood stripes, then using a satin clear.
Does epoxy primer come in old school primer gray shades?

Looks Tough.
Has kind of a Mad Max vibe with the paint, stance and slot wheels.
I prefer a traditional paint job, but that looks pretty good for now.

now you will have to dress the part when out driving the car. ;)

If you are going to use satin clear just use any basecoat color you want. No need to use a "satin" basecoat; they dry satin anyway.

Nice 71 that looks good. I sprayed my other car in epoxy primer 10 years ago. It will fade to a gray/charcole in 6 months to a year. It sould stay for a few years. The paint below will probably still seperate and take the topcoat with it. Mine was applied to bare metal and it wore thin at about 6 years. I have sprayed more primer over the exposed spots and now it looks like a cow. This is what it looked like back then.

House of color has a line called Hotrod Flatz with the flattner agent mixed in it for the same price and will withstand the UV.

You can get away with primer because of your dry climate. That's a neat looking wagon, What is it, a '70 Plymouth Sport Suburban? It looks like a Sport Fury.

thanks for the kind words guys, like I said not bad for temporary...it looked aweful with the peeling and being 3 different shades of blue, rust was the big concern though

wheels are 15x10 rear with toyo 295/50 (13" section width though so they're bigger than most 295 for some reason), hotchkis rear springs with spacer plates so it doesnt drop too much

fronts are 14x7 with 225/70 IIRC, circle track springs with adjusters

I hope to get it back to blue/white next summer

PPG has a product in their Specialty Coatings ST1202 that is sweet looking semigloss black. It is a ready to shoot paint and is $90 a gallon UV stable and also works great for under hood detail. It is muck cheaper in the long run to use that over a black with clear combination, and easy to touch up.
I just buy it by the gallon for projects and like the way it holds up and works.
