: Finally picked it up
sschevellefan Dec 6th, 09, 1:32 AM After months of trying to find the time I finally picked up my 65 el camino. It`s a project but a running project. Has a newer crate 290hp 350 and a T10 4spd. It runs pretty good. I wasn`t sure how well the 290hp engines did but I was impressed with it. I got it from a kid who used it as his senior project in high school. It needs the electrical finished up but it`s a solid foundation. I`m glad to finally have a running toy again.
badrad Dec 6th, 09, 7:12 AM I had a '65 in high school, still miss it. Have fun with the new toy.
65 Turbo Camino Dec 6th, 09, 12:01 PM What size tire and wheel are on the rear. Have fun on your new project.
sschevellefan Dec 6th, 09, 12:05 PM Thanks guys. The rear tires are 255/40/17. I`m not sure what the wheel size is but the tire is stretch on there a little so I`m thinking a 17X8. The guy wasn`t sure. The front wheels are 17X7 with a 235/45/17 tire and I know the rears are wider. I need to change the rear tires though. They are too short and don`t look right. I think I can fit a 275/40/17 on there because there is actually quite a bit of room and the lips haven`t beem trimmed.
SoCal Elk Dec 6th, 09, 7:41 PM I like 65's!
Congrat's on the find.
72ElCamino Dec 6th, 09, 8:08 PM looks like a ton of fun! Seats look like they have some nice bolster too, and cant complain about a 4 speed.

Thanks Eric. I`m looking forward to getting it fixed up. The seats that are in it are the same ones in your link. I don`t fit them very well but the ride home wasn`t to bad. I`ll be changing them to a stock bench when I can find a decent one.

The seats were not very comfortable. They were ok for the ride home but I`m too big for them and the height of them makes it hard for me to get in and out. I will be swapping them for a stock bench.
The 4spd is fun. It`s my first 4spd hot rod. I`ve driven several over the years but never owned a 4spd car myself. It needs better linkage and a better stick but it`s fun going through the gears with a decent sbc.
wreckfixer Dec 7th, 09, 12:33 PM Nice elky, you can fit 18x7's on that with 245's and they look really nice!
sschevellefan Dec 7th, 09, 12:36 PM Thanks. I`m really not into the big diameter wheel thing. 17`s are as big as I would go which is whats on it. If I was to buy a set of wheels they would be 15`s. I like the rallys and the weld pro star wheels.
Congrat's on getting another Camino... Keep up posted!:beers:
Lilracr Dec 7th, 09, 3:24 PM Is there a reason it sits so low in the back and high in the front?

Thanks. It`ll be a while before I can really start working on it but I`ll post updates when I can.
Is there a reason it sits so low in the back and high in the front?
I think it`s just the way it was sitting on the guys property. It doesn`t sit like that going down the road. These are pics the guy sent me. I wasn`t able to get any new pics Saturday but I will this weekend. The rear tires are slightly shorter than the front but not enough to make it sit that way.
Lilracr Dec 7th, 09, 3:34 PM I am not a big wheel fan either, but have actually debated a set of 16" wheels for my 65' since I want to get some wheels this coming spring. I too like the Pro Star design and thinking about the Billet Specialty Street Lites.
Looks lie you have a good foundation for a nice ride there. right at 300hp is not bad numbers to be putting down for a street cruiser. But more is fun! :D

It`s actually in better condition than I thought it was going to be in. It was the guys senior project and once the mechanical part got done he lost interest. It`s got a painless harness than needs to be finished up along with some interior work. He included a 268 voodoo cam/lifter kit so down the road I`ll swap some decent heads on it and put the cam in. I`m actually pretty impressed by this 290hp crate engine. It`s got a HEI, weiand stealth and a Holley 670cfm street avenger. It runs really good. The carb needs a tune to get the flat spot out but once you get past that it pulls pretty good. I think it`ll do for now power wise. At least it runs and drives which should keep me interested in it,lol. I have a tendancy to get projects without drivetrains and lose interest pretty quick.
mino65 Dec 7th, 09, 5:15 PM Good luck with the mino. I have 17 '' on mine all 4 and love them.

Thanks Mark. yours is very nice. What size are your wheels and tires?
mino65 Dec 7th, 09, 7:28 PM Hey tony,they are 17x8, 245 45 17 falkens.
wreckfixer Dec 7th, 09, 9:19 PM Hey Anthony check my stats the post "got my new wheels on today" they are Boyd's 18" X 7 no I wasn't planning on 18's but I got a smokin deal on them and they turned out to look very nice.
1969 El Camino Dan Dec 8th, 09, 1:36 AM I bet you got a real good deal. That driver's footwell filled w/ spaghetti would put most folks off, I bet.
Those Painless wiring kits are really pretty easy to work with, though. I've got one in my '66 Suburban.
Did you get a hood w/ the deal? Definitely need taller tires on there.
Dan

Yeah the wiring looks intimidating but the only thing not wired up is the dome light, heater and gauges. Headlights, taillights, brake lights and turnsignals are working as well as the starting and charging system. I just need to finish it up and clean it up. Yeah there isa hood but it`s bent but I got another one lined up rom a friend. Yeah the tires are too short for sure. I`m still tempted to put 15`s on it but I`ll see if these start growing on me. I`ve got a couple friends who mentioned trading for their wheels so we`ll see.
OLDED Dec 9th, 09, 10:14 AM Welcome to the 65 Elky club. Looks like a solid one to begin the journey with.

Sschevelefan, come back the the '67 side; we need all the support we can get!! Something, something, something..... Darkside....:D
sschevellefan Dec 9th, 09, 12:28 PM Actually I would have loved to get another 67 but it didn`t work out that way. 65 chevelles are my favorite car but there is something about the lines on a 67 el camino. I will probably get one some day but for now I`m happy with the 65. It`s funny, I`ve had more el camino`s than chevelles now, a 64, 2 65`s, a 67 and a 69 SS. I`ve had 2 65 SS chevelles, a 69 and a 70SS. I guess I like A bodys huh?

 Wouldn't that be two years more accumulation under the fenders of the '65 so the 1967 should be faster then, right? You could be right however; i never understood math again when they came out with the "New Math" in the 1970's.:D
sschevellefan Dec 9th, 09, 6:33 PM Robert I think your right but at any rate, I love both years so it`s all good. I just need to get some time to fine tune it and fix it up a bit. The plan is to keep it simple and make a driver outof it but we all know how that can go.
OLDED Dec 10th, 09, 9:50 AM You are right it would be 2 years more accumulation - but 2 more years of weight loss from the rust factor.
rak1 Dec 10th, 09, 11:40 AM You are right it would be 2 years more accumulation - but 2 more years of weight loss from the rust factor.
True 100%:thumbsup::D
sschevellefan Dec 10th, 09, 12:07 PM well any weight it lost from rust was added back on when the PO did the floor pans. It`s all good though. I`m just happy to have a running car again. It`s been 3 years since my last one.
